SAG / Globe Part 2...TV Noms

Hey kids. I have been in Iceland for a few days (all will be revealed in time) so I thought I'd pop in quickly for three things. First, to thank Anne, Tim and Glenn for providing you content while I'm away. Second to say "congrats!" to Golden Globe nominee Sally Hawkins who I met just before leaving on my trip (interview forthcoming) and who kinda sorta blew my mind by actually knowing / loving the site. Was it my Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) obsession? Third, and finally, to list the TV nominations for Globe & SAG.
I'll have more to say on the movie nominations (where my heart lies as you know) other than "co-sign! What Glenn said" once I return to the States this weekend. But for now let's talk the TV nominations after the jump since I only have a hot minute between events here in Iceland.

Can I just remind everyone again that the Emmys did right by Behind the Candelabra and didn't try to pretend that Matt Damon or Michael Douglas were "supporting" actors in a two-lead drama. Well done. I would rejoice that SAG followed suit except that they can only chooose based on what the studio submits. So if the studio says they have zero leads or ten leading men, you say "zero or ten it is!" But the studio didn't even have to choose. You see, further confusing matters and making correlation between the various awards shows almost pointless is that not only do they go by different calendars but they also don't have the same category distinctions: SAG does not differentiate between supporting and leading when it comes to tv movies/miniseries and the Globes do differentiate but then lump in supporting actors from regular series in with movies and miniseries.
It's enough to make the blood vessels in your head explode if you're trying to know what to expect or to even consider the aesthetic differences of opinion. But all that said there are marked differences between the shows. For instance, Emmy did not honor Corey Stoll (House of Cards) or Rob Lowe (Candelabra) with nominations despite having more opportunity to do so given more categories. The Globes course correct here and give these fine gentlemen their due.

Did you notice? SAG is not pretending that American Horror Story is a miniseries rather than a regular series. Good on them. Now if only Emmy will follow suit. In other housekeeping news, I've always hated that SAG did not differentiate between supporting and leading for its television awards (I don't like assymetry in awardage and it's cruel to lump them together while simultaneous stating (as SAG does over in 'motion picture') that they believe these are two different things. I expect SAG is where we see Claire Danes first defeat since Homeland began. I'm guessing Kerry Washington wins both SAG and GLOBE prizes. She's ever more buzzy while Claire Danes, the Emmy winner has to take cover given the (deserved) critical disatisfaction on Homeland. It's worth noting that SAG and GLOBES have extremly dissimilar taste in this field with only Kerry Washington making both lists.
Listen I love... let me restate... LOVE Dame Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess but these autopilot nominations from SAG, especially when there are only five women allowed in a category fusion, need to stop.

Any TV awards groups that ignore Mad Men are pointless. Yes, yes, I know it's common sport now to try to take it down several notches (that's what years of accolades will do to a classic) but the proof is in the pudding. This show always had it, still has it, and will probably keep on demonstrating that from top to bottom of the call list until it goes off the air.

As a member of SAG, I'm embarrassed by the poor choice of our nominees, especially in light of how well the Globes did.......for once. At least next year, the SAG nom people will be different.

I'm glad Maslany got nominated (her work is sensational), and I'm intrigued enough by The White Queen and Dancing on the Edge to be happy with their appearances. And of course, seeing shows not nominated by rote is always a good thing - given how long shows get those ridiculous nominations no matter how good/bad they get, it's nice to see a changing of the guard. Though, of course, it shows up (Game of Thrones was amazing, but Dinklage certainly wasn't a standout).
Globes TV noms were SO MUCH BETTER than SAG TV noms.

Why is 30 Rock still eligible for awards?
Category fraud is okay if it's Jessica Lange, right?
I don't know whether I think Globe TV choices are gimmicky or creative. I like that they spread it around, I think. These critics groups can't just keep honoring the same people when there are so many shows and so many ways to read them. I bet we wouldn't see honors for Orange is the New Black or Orphan Black elsewhere, right?

I get teary-eyed with residual Poppy love every time I see a Sally Hawkins photo. Not to say she hasn't demonstrated stunning range since.
I've also seen her twice on stage - she happened to be on Broadway when I was visiting New York, and playing on West End when I was in London last year (which made it rather easy to select which shows to see on both trips). In both cases I came away satisfied. And okay, yes, starry-eyed. I kind of adore her.
I think Arrested Development is the epitome of ensemble comedies, but Season 4 isn't at all an ensemble showcase. I think that's a large part of why, for some, it failed to live up to its earlier season: the characters were no longer bouncing off one another in such perfect rhythms. It was, however, a showcase of writing with one of the most brilliantly constructed overlapping storylines, making great use of the background and sides of the screen at numerous points, which is what made it a success for me.
Modern Family used to be (in lovely Season 1) a true ensemble piece, nuanced in its comic timing and stopping just short of sentimental - warming and delightful. Now it's a shrill-filled half hour of overacting hams bleeding their once subtle performances into noisy overplayed buffoonery (exception, for the most part, Ed O'Neill). An ensemble is not just a bunch of caricatures trying to out mug one another. Puh-leez - Parks and Rec. has been out performing this drivel every year with big characters that still have the ring of truth.
I adore both of you.
As a Brit, I'd like to confirm that Jacqueline Bisset was amazing in Dancing On The Edge. The show as a whole was 'quite good'.
The White Queen was a bit dull, but McTeer was great in it.
Their appearances here make me a little nervous - Gillian Anderson and The Fall should be SWEEPING the BAFTAs next year... not so sure that they will now...

Somehow the Golden Globes manage it every year to make one nomination which makes me forgive everything else - this year it is TATIANA MASLANY.

THANK YOU FOR FUCKING SAYING IT. Regardless of whether you think it hit its stride around the third season (the most popular opinion I've read?), each episode is still meticulously conceived, woven, designed, and occasionally revelatory. IMO, i think each season continues to reach a little deeper, play a little more with concept, and the actors are still knocking it out of the fucking park.
And I will always love Downton Abbey, but c'mon. That show doesn't give any more fucks.

Re TV -- totally agree w your stmt about Parks and Rec being a stellar ensemble. Also glad for Janet McTeer. She was the best thing about Albert Nobbs, and a good addition to Damages season 5, and very good in the White Queen.
I am with you on the Lizzy Caplan snub. And while we're at it, WHY no love for Allison Janney in Masters of Sex? She's SO GOOD on that show. All the women are, actually. My favorite new show this season.
Orange is the New Black was stupid to submit as a Drama. It could have swept the Comedy awards.
Mad Men has its moments but collectively it just hasn't gelled for me the past couple of seasons. It's too bad Hamm will probably never win an Emmy or SAG for playing Draper, but with some of the angles Weiner has chosen to pursue/prioritize in S5/S6, I can't really blame awards bodies from moving on in a big way. You have some brilliant moments still, but also major characters getting the short shrift, yet there was still time for soap opera shenanigans, whorehouse flashbacks and Bob Benson (well acted by Wolk, but the point was?), so the reversal of awards fortune isn't some great mystery.
I've always wondered if anyone famous read you... is that the first time you heard something like this? (well, melanie lynskey obviously is another one)
The Globes are completely immune to Kathy Bates on series television. 6 previous nominations and 2 wins—if we were talking about an Academy record she'd ready have joined: Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Jessica Lange, and Denzel Washington—whatever. Go back to the movies and steal parts from your theatrical release competitors: Jacki Weaver, Margo Martindale, and Melissa Leo.

Globe Best Actress in a Drama Series is AH-MAZING. Daaamn. That Orphan Black nod is something to celebrate, Maslany is rather phenomenal on that show. It reminds me of when the Globes embraced Alias as quickly as they did - good entertaining genre tv with FANTASTIC acting.
Also very cool that our premiere hardworking, underused leading men of color CHIWETEL and IDRIS got some dual recognition each. There's something else to celebrate. Hollywood needs to give them both more plump roles, duh yes?
I'm hoping Douglas wins the Globe and Damon nets SAG. I want Damon to get something, he was so great in that tricky part.
LOVE how the Globes went for the resurgence of The Good Wife in a big way. Easily could've been forgotten but that show has had some amazing standout moments and episodes this season so far. Shame SAG didn't nominated that amazing ensemble of fabulous and perfectly-casted actors.
I need to see HBC as Liz NOW but I'm hoping Moss takes both those tv movie/miniseries awards to spite the awful Emmy snub.
Glad Monica Potter was singled out, she had an amazing career-best year on Parenthood last season. Everyone who saw her tape thought her Emmy snub was sinful so I'm glad to see the Globes right that wrong.
Can we please give Amy the Comedy Actress Globe? She'll be hosting and her speech, presentation and afterglow are all sure to be comic gold! I want her to trot it out after she's won, like a baby or something. That shit would be amazing if they gave her the material. And Tiny can act all bitter since she wasn't even nominated. Ugh, this needs to happen!
