Blue Days... To Come

1 Day until... Today Blue Caprice competes for two Gotham Film Awards
1 Day until... NYFCC, the oldest film critics organization (not to be confused with NYFCO, a much newer upstart) kicks off critics prize season and we get our first clue as to whether Cate Blanchett's Blue Jasmine is a steamroller (Dec 3rd)
2 Days until... NBR announces kicking off the not-critics-but-we-also-give-prizes prize season (Dec 4th)
5 Days until... Blue is the Warmest Color wins (?) the European Film Awards (Dec 7th)
6 Days until... Adele Exarchopoulus wins Best Actress at LAFCA for Blue is the Warmest Color. What? They always go foreign at LAFCA in that category (Dec 8th)
10 Days until... The Golden Globes make like Blue Balls... but how Blue? Nominations for Blue Jasmine are a given but Warmest Color could win nods, too. (Dec 12th)

All of this  might make our Oscar Chart Updates - currently in progress look instantly out of date

41 Days until... Cate wins the Golden Globe (Jan 12th)
45 Days until... until Blue Jasmine is nominated for [HOW MANY?] Oscars and Cate wins the Best Actress "Critics Choice" Awards (Jan 16th)
47 Days until... Cate Blanchett wins SAG (Jan 18th)
50 Days until... until Blue Jasmine hits DVD/Blu-Ray (Jan 21st)
60 Days until... Blue is the Warmest Color wins [HOW MANY?] César nominations in Paris (Jan 31st)
89 Days until... all three Blue titles compete for Spirit Awards in Santa Monica (March 1st)
90 Days until... Cate Blanchett wins her second Oscar (March 2nd)

Blue Jasmine is a decent enough film and Cate is really good in it but I'm not in love with it. And I don't think Sally Hawkins deserves a nomination at all, and I'm a huge fan of hers. She deserved to WIN for Happy-Go-Lucky.

Except when they went for an American—Jessica Lange in Blue Sky.

^Cool comparison between Lange and Blanchett!
Can't wait to see her on the podium again, though I'm still wary of Bullock.

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

Judi Dench for the WIN!! :-)

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

After Lawrence's win last year, it would be such a relief for a worthy performance like Blanchett's to earn a Best Actress statuette. And I say that as someone who's typically chilly toward Cate's work.

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

Yes it does seem pretty obvious. I would personally love to see a critics sweep.

Adèle still gave the best performance of the year in my book but that's really not gonna happen so I'm all for Blanchett steamrolling this awards season. Best win in this category since Cotillard by a country mile. It's been pretty lousy before and after that win.

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterZé Vozone

In the mid-2000s LAFCA went big for non-American actresses in English language roles-- Staunton, Mirren, Hawkins. We are on a four-year streak of foreign-language winners, but there are other possibilities that could fit into their patterns: Blanchett, Delpy, Garcia, Cotillard, etc.

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJake D

Blanchett all the way :)

Very humorous post, love it.

No one likes a critics sweep. It s boring. There is no drama. BUT if anyone deserves a critics sweep, it's Cate Blanchett and for a performance like Blue Jasmine. Let's face it, even cate haters feel a little awkward about her only oscar win in the supporting category. An actress of her caliber and general prestige should have won years ago. And it s gonna be even more enjoyable to watch because we know she s going to look amazing and be extremely graceful and professional on the podiums receiving awards. It's the perfect time for the perfect performance. And like previously mentioned, last year's lawrence win did nothing for the academy's credibility. That performance does not age well at all! And it was all the more ironic because she defeated an amazing performance by an international highly respected older actress. So for all the adele and brie supporters, just take a breather this year. these young and talented actresses have done a great job but it'll take them years of devoted effort to pull off a performance as profound, rich and technically complex as Jasmine. Just don't ruin Blanchett's deserved celebration. For the sake of credibility

I haven't had a chance to see either film yet, but I have a feeling that the LAFCA will go for Paulina Garcia for Gloria over Adèle for Blue is the Warmest Color. Again, I haven't seen either film yet so I don't know how they stack up, but it seems that when they go for a foreign actress winner she is usually older and the film is not as well known, i.e. Yoon Jeong-hee in Poetry and Kim Hye-ya in Mother.

Christine Lahti won the LA prize for Running on Empty. So cool.

Cate all the way this year!

Tony T -- i love you but this is downright whack ;)

Let's face it, even cate haters feel a little awkward about her only oscar win in the supporting category. An actress of her caliber and general prestige should have won years ago.
SHE DID WIN YEARS AGO. An Oscar is an Oscar is an Oscar. Just ask Glenn Close, Sigweavie, Amy Adams The Bening, Deborah Kerr...

I am known, bizarrely, as a Cate hater and I don't think it's awkward that she won for supporting.

Nathan, don't forget the Great Myrna Loy...who never even got nommed...what a load of horseshit!

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Out of the real Best Actress contenders I've only seen Sandra and Cate (which seems to be the only two that matter, according to most everyone) and I thought both were amazing and did their job, but Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine was on another level. I'm not even a fan of Cate, never really got the hype to be honest, but she was so unbelievable in Blue Jasmine. I couldn't even laugh at most of the things everyone else was laughing at in the theatre because I felt so uncomfortable and downright bad for her literally going insane. At this point, I really want her to win the Oscar. If Sandra hadn't won for The Blind Side (in an ideal world), then I'd probably be rooting for her simply because a sci-fi performance has never won and that would be cool and honestly if she hadn't won before she'd probably find herself an cakewalk this awards season.

I don't think you're a Cate hater at all! I can see you respect her quite a bit but you are way cooler towards than you were when she first became famous. In a way she's my Julianne Moore. She s the first actress who blew me away with a performance (elizabeth) when I was nothing but 13 years old and i have watched her grow into what she has become now.
Brie larson is wonderful too in her movie. Adele is a treat to watch but her performance is all intuitive and great direction. Seydoux does the real acting in that movie on my opinions.
Sandra Bullock i just don't get.
It'll be a sad sad day if Bullock and Swank both have two oscars while Kidman and Blanchett have to be content with their solo win with all they've given to cinema and our collective actressexuality. And yes I do feel for Glenn close and michelle pfeiffer and julianne moore and the all the other oscarless heroines who watch flavor of the year starlets like halle berry or zellwegger take away the big prize. When they deliver I will root for them too. This year, cate blanchett delivered.

Also Nathaniel I love you too.

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTony T

I have a nagging feeling, that there is so much sarcasm in this post. Nat, it seems to me that you loathe the fact that Cate might actually win an Oscar Best Actress. Give her a break. She isn't overrated as you think she is. Let us just wait for the awards season to begin and then, you can start the hate. ;)

If I am wrong, my apologies.

Oh brother.

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

stupendous and others -- i think people are misreading this. I loved Cate in Blue Jasmine. I just thought it woudl be a silly post because you know she's gonna streamroll.

December 2, 2013 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Surprised you guys on the podcast were not harsher on the Woody Allen script getting an ISA nod over better screenplays by lesser known writers. Woody could survive without a nomination that I'll be shocked he win a thing for.

Blanchett was great but even as somebody who did not mind the broadness and characterizations, I still found Woody's choices to have too much short-cutting and unnecessary.

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCMG

Cate Blanchett is a great actress but she's never been tge best of any year and that includes 2013 (Exarchopoulos is so winning my gold medal).

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Cate has the best performance of this year wrapped up for me, followed closely by Amy Adams for her extraordinary work in American Hustle.

Can someone please explain to me what is so great about Judi Dench's performance? She was sleepwalking throughout that entire film.

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJordan

cal roth hates Glenn Close—you have no credibility.

And if Blanchett wins this year I see her winning a third before she reaches two digits in Oscar nominations—take that Streep!

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commenter3rtful

3rtful - cate could win her third playing meryl in that von-trier-directed drowning movie!

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermarcelo

Winning for a supporting performance is in no way less commendable than winning for a leading performance, even for an actress like Blanchett known as a leading lady rather than a character actress. Pre-"Blue Jasmine," Blanchett's best work has actually been in supporting roles: 1) "I'm Not There," 2) "The Aviator," and 3) "The Talented Mr. Ripley."

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBVR

3rtful is calling out someone for unreasonably hating on an actress lol!

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Cate's best (and worst) work was bringing Julia Sugarbaker realness in Hanna.

December 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCMG

I don't hate Glenn Close. She is just not that good an actress, but I loved her in Albert Nobbs.

December 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Glenn Close is the female Gary Oldman. And like Oldman isn't respected enough by the Academy because they choose to play favorites and go for the Day-Lewis and Streep instead.
