"Oh putain!" It's Jean Dujardin

This just in from our friend Julien in Paris... Jean Dujardin, interviewed on Europe1 this week to promote his new movie Mobius, was asked about his acceptance speech at last year's Oscars and Emmanuelle Riva's nomination in Best Actress this year, the award he'll be presenting on Oscar night.

The actor famously proclaimed "Oh putain!" before launching into his acceptance speech which sort of translates to "Fuck!".  In fact, some people believe that it's the only word you need to know to speak French.

Dujardin goes on to confess that he didn't vote (!?!) and congratulates Emmanuelle Riva on her BAFTA win. He promises the interviewer that if Emmanuelle Riva wins on Oscar night he'll shout "Oh, putain - It's Emmanuelle Riva!" when he opens the envelope.

Do you think he'll get the chance?

P.S. While you're here why not like the Film Experience on Facebook?

That Putain video is so damn true.

We need this very French moment. Make it happen, Academy!

Someone please tell him there's still time to cast his vote for Riva

Much prefer F. Murray Abraham's response when Geraldine Page won oscar.

It's amazing how random some actors can be when it comes to vote or even watch movies. I'm sure he's not the only one who missed this year. They totally live in their own world. Can we vote for them? Anyway, I would prefer "Oh là là!" and yes Riva, please.

I've been trying to convince myself that an almost complete 'Amour'-sweep (with wins in all categories it's nominated for except Best Picture) is possible and just about to happen, but I haven't quite dared to make that my official prediction yet (though I'd sure love to say 'Told you so' to everyone when Haneke is standing up there for the third time in one evening, this time to accept Best Director).

Riva seems to be the film's best chance to win a second award besides 'Best Foreign Language Film', and it also fits the 'What would Ernest Borgnine do'-bill, so I can totally see it happening (and I'm keeping my finger's crossed for her).

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMrW

Omg, now I'm going to be nervously hoping to hear "oh putain" when he opens the envelope and if I don't, I'm going to become immediately depressed. If Jennifer Lawrence wins, I think I will be genuinely sad. I've been disappointed by wins in the past, but never legitimately saddened (not true actually ... I was genuinely saddened by Meryl beating Viola, but still, you get my point).

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Mr. Dujardin is quite dashing--Putain on the Ritz. I really hope he doesn't become another Paul Lukas/Paul Scofield/F. Murray Abraham and loses his film career to the Best Actor award.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Oh putain, yes to Emmanuelle Riva. Really, there's no other rational choice this year (especially considering that Marion Cotillard and Rachel Weisz were inexplicably left off the list in favor of Québooboo and Jessica "Charisma Void" Chastain).

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoseph

Ditto to everything Joseph said!

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMichael

I agree that Riva definitely, definitely should win, but "Québooboo"? Eesh.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBeRightBack

I keep seeing this "Quebooboo" name on here and I really hope it stops ... it sounds pretty offensive to me.

omg, lol @ berightback - didn't see your comment until after i typed that. i agree!

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

All five lead actress nominees earned those nominations. I'd genuinely be thrilled for any of them winning.

And Jean Dujardin's beard is really doing it for me right now. Yum. Too bad he's married and his English is so strained.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJuelz

A year ago who among you have even heard of Emmanuelle Riva? Now everyone acts like her loss would be the greatest blow in Oscar history. I'd advise taking a note from M. Dujardin and not taking all this too seriously.

Excelsior!

If Jean Dujardin (SWOON!) gets to give the Best Actress Oscar to Emmanuelle Riva, I will cry tears of joy. If he gets to give the Best Actress Oscar to Quevenzhane Wallis, I will grin the biggest grin ever because OMG the cuteness! If he gets to give the Best Actress Oscar to Naomi Watts, I will be unable to pick my jaw up off the floor, even as I begin a slow clap. If he gets to give the Best Actress Oscar to Jennifer Lawrence or Jessica Chastain, I will throw up my hands, sigh, and say "Oh putain! Not the way I would have voted, but what can you do?"

Seriously, the J's are fine, but they've done and will go on to do FAR better, more deserving work than these performances. Riva puts every other acting nominee this year to shame.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdenny

Joseph: Um, that was kind of the *point* of Chastain's character in Zero Dark Thirty. She's supposed to be a dead focused perfect hunter, which Chastain, frankly, manages to play perfectly. Injecting "charisma" is exactly what would kill any attempt to believe in that character and would sink the movie around her. To anyone else who actually believes that character needed it, I think you're pretty much saying one of three things: 1. Characters like Maya should only be male, whether or not they're lead of supporting. Hypocritical misogynist puffery. 2. Characters like Maya shouldn't exist at all. 3. Characters like Maya, whether male or female, should only be sideline characters in someone else's narrative. If you believe either of the latter two things, you'll HATE JP Melville films, especially Le Samourai.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

I haven't seen Amour. But of the other four nominees, there's no contest: Jessica Chastain gave the best performance. She carries her tensely pulsating movie with grace, intelligence, passion and courage. Her work is beautifully organic to the film; it's all about subtlety, quietness, what's just under the surface--everything that's not actorly. In this, I'm sure she has a lot in common with Ms. Riva's work in Amour. A tie might be in order. It has been 44 years.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Joseph: Jessica "Charisma Void" Chastain?? Seriously? Did you just make this up yourself, because it is pretty dumb and far from the truth. If you're talking about her personality, just ask the many number of people who met her after her performances in The Heiress. I also think it was Kris Tapley who a few months ago said something like "she lights up the room like no other". If you're talking about her character in ZD30, well you have no critical cinematic analysis.

And FYI, Emmanuelle Riva FTW!

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJones

Quebooboo? That shit is racist and it needs to stop.

And Dujardin couldn't be bothered to vote? He was invited to the Academy over last summer. It wouldn't make sense for him to skip voting, especially when they are so many foreign nominees this year. Maybe the online voting confused him too much. I don't believe he was too busy when all he needed was an internet connection to vote.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSamson

Jones, I saw her appearances on Letterman and The Daily Show right after ZD30 opened, and this woman is just pure charm and unadulterated loveliness. She definitely has that rare knack for keeping you hanging on her every word and gesture. Just a breath of fresh air. I can't wait for the Red Carpet on Oscar Evening.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Samson--I'm pretty sure people who say they were too busy to vote don't mean that they couldn't find the time to physically sit down and mark their ballots. I think they mean that they didn't have enough time to catch up on the nominees, and they probably don't want to vote if they're not informed enough to do so, which I think is probably for the best. Actually, if every voter were required to see every nominee before voting, I'm certain the results would have been much different at almost every past ceremony.

MrW--That would be amazing. Plus I'm pretty sure Michael Haneke's fake Twitter account would explode.

Also, what's with the F. Murray Abraham comparisons? Is it just because Dujardin was kind of an unknown in America when he won the Oscar, as Abraham was in 1984? Two things: for every F. Murray Abraham, there's also a Geoffrey Rush. And secondly, F. Murray Abraham has admittedly kept a low profile since his Oscar win, but his recent appearances on TV shows like Louie and Homeland have been pretty great.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEdwin

Edwin: Yes! Actors are busy making movies so the rest of us can occupy ourselves with questions over which checkmark to put on a ballot.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSan FranCinema

If he doesn't have the time to be an Academy member and actually watch the nominees in the running, then he shouldn't have accepted membership. There are people here who would give their right arm for the privilege and who would be more diligent than this. And he could have easily meant that he wasn't able to crack the new online system. Dujardin doesn't strike me as all that bright. The online voting issues have been rampant FYI. The same thing happened to Jacki Weaver.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLiLi

Hathaway and Riva/Amour are the only things I care about this year Oscarwise. I'd give Amour best picture if I could.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAle-Alejandro

Edwin, my intended meaning was that Abraham won an Oscar and then, for whatever reason, seemingly dropped off the face of the Earth. I surely hope that doesn't happen to Mr. Dujardin.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

My favorite part of last year's Oscars was when you could see Bejo translating everything for Dujardin. I would so love a "oh putain" moment.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterjtagliere

SanFran Cinema: Well, primarily, everyone who had recently seen Hiroshima Mon Amour.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

I prayed to the highest power on earth. Please dont let jlaw win. Finally seen the movie. She's not
worthy of a nom. Geez knightley and rachel top that bland over acting look at me b...ch. . I feel it was cooper"s movie all along. She's sure have place in supporting.

Everyone is predicting jlaw for the win. If oscar has dignity, everyone but her.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterchand

Yeah, I had heard of Riva before I had heard of Lawrence (and I was familiar with both of them long before I had heard of Wallis), but I don't really see how that's relevant to whether any of them deserve an Oscar. After all, I was familiar with Pia Zadora a long time ago, too.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Suzanne -LOL

although I do have an experience which relates to SanFran's frustration. I remember when Jessica Tandy emerged to overthrow the Michelle Pfeiffer train I was SO pissed because everyone was acting like her filmography was like this STELLAR thing which was so not true and kept mentioning A Streetcar Named Desire though she was the only stage star not to do the classic film. so i hated her getting credit for a legendary film career when she didn't really have one. RIVA on the other hand has Hiroshima Mon Amour

February 19, 2013 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I was about to chime in and take issue with the idea that Jessica Chastain has a "charisma void". Glad other, more level-headed commenters than myself did. If anything I get a toothache watching her interviews (be it on the Red Carpet or those 30 minute interviews with Dave Poland) and my friends who did the stage door to The Heiress are pretty much going to be fans for life for how nice she was to them. She is so nice and charming that I am not entirely convinced she is human and am waiting for Hollywood to corrupt her.

February 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCMG

Nathaniel, let's not to forget Leon Morin, Priest. Her and Belmondo as a priest in a religious discussion under Melville's direction? It shouldn't work at all but it does.

February 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCMG

There's a good chance that Jean will give an oscar to Emmanuel.

First - it'd be a nice moment to see a young French actor honor a well respected Dame of French cinema.

Second - it'd be Emmanuel's birthday - another nice touch

and Third - Emmnauel delivered THE BEST performance.

There's a few Academy members who do the right thing and vote for the BEST and not for the MOST POPULAR.

And anyway - Jessica, Jennifer and Naomi will probably get another chance.

February 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBette Streep

He's adorable! I think Riva may win, the Academy members are pretty old and we already know they loved Amour.
