Film Bitch Awards Best Supporting Actress Prizes (2000-2011)
Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at 4:00PM I'll announce 2012's nominees the second the write-ups are done (working on them this week). But until then another listy flashblack to year's past here at The Film Experience. My opinions have changed somewhat over the years (as many opinions should if we continue to evolve) and perhaps I'll detail which changes those were in the future but mostly I like to think of Awards, both mine and other people's as time capsules of What We Valued At That Moment.

Nathan, I was rooting for Virginia too in 2004. Wonderful performance, and nobody expected anything like that from her. So touching and honest. I love the shoutouts to Vanessa Redgrave, Emily Blunt and Catherine O'Hara, who is a comic goddess as far as I am concerned. Wow, you really like Samantha Morton!
Love a lot of these choices! A little surprised Adams didn't medal in '05, she would have EASILY taken the gold from me.
I remember loving DANCER IN THE DARK the first time I saw it, but now I barely remember Catherine Deneuve's performance in it. Maybe I need to watch it again?
Also, Rachel Weisz was not in your lineup for 2005? I thought she was brilliant in THE CONSTANT GARDENER. I sort of remember there was category confusion with her and Maria Bello that year regarding the awards race.
Some excellent choices here. I especially love that you mentioned Olivia Williams for The Ghost Writer, Bebe Neuwirth for Tadpole, and Patty Clarkson for Dogville, as well as, of course, Tilda. And as to Fiona Shaw, I'd say that was the most memorable Supporting Actress turn that year - though whether one considers it marvelous or frightful, well, it's understandable why it's divisive (personally, I think it's frightfully marvelous).
Rachel Weisz was lead in Film Bitch, as she should be campaigned. But Maria Bello was lead to me too.
I loved Deneuve in Dancer in the Dark. She would take my personal prize twice in the 2000's, the second time for her haunting Junon in A Christmas Tale. Junon is one of the best roles of the last decade and she kills it in every single detail.

You picked Weaver, but we can say Leo was brilliant choice, too, specially when we consider they could have passed on her only because of sexism. That race was ugly, but they did the right thing (Weaver had no chance).
Glad to see a mention for Miranda Richardson in 'Spider which is, to my mind, one of the greatest screen performances of all time. Also love Imelda Staunton in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Rosemarie DeWitt in Rachel Getting Married, and of course Mo'Nique in Precious.

The Tomei mention in 2007 reminds me of how everyone in "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" (actors and behind the scenes persons) was doing career best or near career best and few folks seemed to care. Awards for them all.

I wish Patty had been nominated for The Station Agent rather than Pieces of April. Alas she would still have lost to RZ's Ruby. In total agreement about the 07-09 run of winners. My immediate thought coming out of Michael Clayton (v.early in the season) was that I wanted Tilda to win. Kristen Scott Thomas (SFITY) and Samantha Barks would be on my ballot this year with Anne, Helen and possibly Olivia Coleman in Hyde Park on Hudson - the only good thing in that boring film.

I still pound my fist against the table for the near miss of Michelle Pfeiffer's astounding work in "White Oleander," but CZJ essentially was "Chicago," so I didn't mind her win at all. Look at this retrospective list, I'm reminded of how much so many of these performances were instrumental in my appreciation of films I would have otherwise not cared for either athear all orthe as much (Madsen in "Sideways," Adams in "Junebug," Davis in "Doubt," Cotillard in "Nine").
I remember really pulling for nods for Samantha Morton in "Minority Report" in 2002 and Mila Kunis in "Black Swan" in 2010a (though if I'm totally honest, I think it was more for the real-life narrative of Meg's becoming an Oscar nominee).
I thought you hated Kate Hudson in Almost Famous?
@Nathaniel: Michelle Pfeiffer is my favorite actress too mostly because I think it's hard to make a top 3 or even 5 "Michelle Pfeiffer Performances" without leaving out an equally brilliant one. If I had to rank my favorite Pfeiffer performances it would be 1) Franke & Johnny, 2) Fabulous Baker Boys, 3) White Oleander, 4) Batman Returns, and 5) The Deep End of the Ocean, and at least 3 of those were the best of their respective years, and ALL of them placed in the top of that year (and there's even more fabulous performances outside these 5!!).
Let's hope "Malavita" gives her rich material!

I always thought Barraza wasn't given enough credit for what she did with a rather thin part, but she was incredibly moving in "Babel." I think Cruz nailed it in "VCB" and Aghdashloo was pretty wonderful in "House of Sand and Fog."
The 2007-2010 period for the Supporting categories are probably the best ever: Bardem + Ledger + Waltz + Bale (+ Plummer in 2011) and Swinton + Cruz + Mo'nique + Leo??
I dare anyone find 4 straight winners in 2 categories (not only acting) as consistently good as those.

Oh! A few comments about my list ...
2012?? - I still have too many things to see. But I've seen all the Oscar nominees and I'm kind of hoping for a Sally Field upset (even though I start crying EVERY time my iPod shuffles Anne into the mix).
Rebel Wilson was HILARIOUS in a not so hilarious movie. I totally do NOT understand why Selma Hayak wasn't given proper consideration for Savages. #5 will have to wait.
2011 - McCarthy would have won if she was a man. Say what you will about Super 8, Elle was captivating. Ms. Mulligan shattered my heart.
2010- Yeah, 6, indecisive at times. Peet played a total Bitch with all the vulnerability we know is the source of every bitches bitchiness.
2009 - Duh!
2008 - A big part of this for me was my love for Tomei and never quite saying she was the best. I WAS Graynor's character in college. The Crazy Cruz!
2007 - The year 10 women could have won and I'd be just fine with it.
2006 - hmmm. The year I refused to acknowledge actual movie stars?
2005- Next to Monique, this was one of my easiest decisions ever. I like Weitz, but.. Ummm. N. Just, N.
2004 - Was it simply because Julia Roberts was still the highest paid actress in Hollywood that she was considered for Best Actress and Natalie Portman for Supporting Actress? Because I find this to be one of the most irritating instances of category fraud. I love when my list has no resemblance to Oscar.
2003 - Agonizing to decide. But Ricci is SO under appreciated. Clarkson was Genuis, Richardson made me pee my pants with fear.
2002 - This is a look back in time and say "What?" moment. Sedgwick is amazing, but Streep was so deliciously odd!!
2001 - Bend and Snap! I stand behind Coolidge. But I watched EVERYTHING Mirren had made after seeing this movie.
2000 - Best "loving" Movie Mom EVER. A couple messed up girls, The Oscar Winner, And Posey is priceless.

2000: Deneuve is a worthy choice although I take it you considered Harden a lead (?) because how else could she miss. I know you weren’t a fan of Winslet that year but I found her worthy and I believe you mentioned feeling guilty about omitting one the few Connolly performances you could embrace.
2001: No arguments here although I still feel Connolly deserved her Oscar nom if not the win.
2002: Once again you show impeccable taste not only with your lineup but winner as well.
2003: Hunter nailed it but I wish you’d made room for at least one of the hard-hitting “Mystic” gals.
2004: I still say Blanchett but Madsen’s comeback was so refreshing and the Hannah/Clarkson nods are wickedly deserved.
2005: I too considered Weisz a lead and also went with Bello that year but in retrospect Adam’s breakthrough really feels like the true triumph of that category.
2006: Love this unconventional, quite deserving lineup, especially those two beguiling “Dahlia” performances.
2007: It was all about Swinton for me and I’m thrilled you and Oscar (still can’t believe it) agreed. Citing Staunton over Blanchett was a brave and respectable choice.
2008: Cruz was brilliant (although I preferred her lead performance in “Elegy” that same year) and while DeWitt, Tomei and Davis all made my ballot I’m still haunted most by Winger’s poisonous Abby.
2009: Mo’Nique all the way. But I’ glad that you were a big fan of my second choice for that year—a searing Marion Cotillard.
2010: No arguments here and still love reading your interview with Weaver.
2011: The lack of awards season traction for Redgrave is still baffling (for shame BAFTA) so I’m glad she has this honor despite being slightly more partial to McCarthy.
2012: Predictions: Kidman (fingers crossed she snags her 2nd gold Film Bitch prize), Hathaway, Green, Kruger and… Huppert?

2006 - again... maybe one of the Babel ladies but I couldn't care less about this category (and the whole year for that matter)
2007 - Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) and I love that I called it!
2009 - Viola Davis (Doubt) (love Penélope, she's the one great thing in that trainwreck of a movie)
2010 - Mo'Nique (Precious) (very nice category too, aside from that random Gyllenhaal nom)
2011 - Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom) (she was so much better than everyoen else in that category. shame melissa "I love giving awkward speeches" leo was sweeping everything)

I'd probably go with Chastain. btw, still pissed off at how octavia spencer bullshat her way to this oscar. there are at least 100 black actresses who give that performance every year it's so stereotyped and wrong. not a single critic backed her up, but she sure knew how to campaign
2013 - I'd give it to helen hunt, easily
