NPR interview Rita Moreno on her career in musicals, movies and tv and her Oscar win...

I was sure that Judy Garland would probably win, because she was up for Judgment [at] Nuremburg. It was a straight role, not a musical. And I was so amazed and so surprised. Never even dreamed of doing a just-in-case little speech — 'and I want to thank Robert Wise and Jerry Robbins' — nothing! I didn't even work on anything like that, so when I got up there I did this memorable nonspeech. I said, 'I don't believe it!' And there's this pause, and then I say, 'Good lord.' And then I'm trying to think of something, and then I finally say, 'I leave you with that!'

I ran into the wings and I started to cry."

There's a lot of horror-themed tv shows on the way (this, Psycho-inspired The Bates Motel, and Hannibal) are you a Yes on any of them? Or perhaps a No or Maybe So

Educated people are easily recognizable due to their characteristics; they do not believe in everything they hear without a rational prove, they listen to the point of views of others with patience even if they are opposite to their own beliefs.

Mo'Nique in Precious should be on that bad mothers list!

Rita Moreno is electrifying in West Side Story. Well-deserved. The speech, not so much. She did way better at the Tony's. One of the best EVER!

Philip H.: If you actually read their justifications, it's clear that they're honouring "mothers who wind up being bad but have (at least one) good intention in the raising of their children". Even, in a weird way, Mrs. Iselin.

Let's go through them:

1. Probably wants her daughter to show strength.
2. Unknown, probably not as bad as Norman remembers to create the drag routine.
3. An almost impossible choice brought on by loyalty to her actual offspring.
4. Wants to make daughter independent
5. Bottling self to try & limit damage in the short term.
6. Wants to instill faith.
7. Like the first one, wants son to show strength.
8. Wants her son's memory to wind up untarnished.
9. Wants her son to understand and value power.
10. Wants her children to respect celebration, even if it seems "pointless."

It is a "best" bad mother list, not a "worst" bad mother list, after all. That nugget of "how could you see these actions as possibly helping the child(ren)", isn't really present in someone like Mo'nique's Precious character or Piper Laurie's character in Carrie.

Philip H.: A list of most provably non-great intentioned bad mothers that I've seen? Well, okay:

10. Rosalind Focker (Meet the Fockers)
9. Mrs. Lowry (Brazil)
8. Mabel Longhetti (A Woman Under the Influence)
7. Petunia Dursley (Harry Potter (I know, a Dursley is an easy pick))
6. Mrs. Iselin (I can see the good intention, but it's a stretch to call it a "great" base purpose and when added with her exact methods, she's hard to defend.)
5. Mrs. Horowitz (All About Steve (really, you allowed your daughter to remain like THAT, even though she's forty something))
4. Cindy Green (The Odd Life of Timothy Green)
3. Mary Jones (Precious)
2. (I know this being not a film originally makes it a stretch) Sheila Broflovski (the moment she refuses to stop and listen to her son right away, all pretense of "good intentions" is gone) (South Park: BL&U)
1. Margaret White (Carrie)

I will always love Kasi Lemmons for Eve's Bayou, one of my very favorite films of the 90s. I hope Black Nativity turns out well.

thefilmjunkie -- i don't remember loving that film but it definitely showed promise and felt like a one-of-a-kind type of thing. So I'm rooting for Lemmons to make a great movie

Worst movie mother (sister, wife, sister-in-law) of all time: Ellen Berent (Gene Tierney) in Leave Her to Heaven.

March 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Paul Outlaw: Are you officially a "mother" if you don't even pass pregnancy? I'd agree she's a horrible person overall, but I think you need to pass pregnancy to actually be called a horrible mother.

Debbie Morgan in "Eve's Bayou" is absolutely sublime, but in retrospect the film itself is a mixed bag, though mostly good (if memory serves me correctly).

March 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Well, or raise a freaky "plant child", since I mentioned Timothy Green.

March 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Troy, I haven't seen that film, but as a huge All My Children fan, I can certainly vouch for Ms. Morgan's sublimeness. She is terrific as Dr. Angela Hubbard, and will join the cast as the soap debuts online on April 29. Forgive my detour from cinema, but I am shamelessly promoting both All My Children and One Life to Live as they go online with original episodes in this historic event. Please, check them out. You can watch on Hulu and on mobile with Hulu Plus and Itunes. Thank you!
