Finally, if you're in Gotham, you should know that PAM GRIER, Jackie Brown and Foxy Brown herself, is getting the weekend festival treatment at the Walter Reade right now. She'll be appearing tonight for an interview before the screening of Jackie Brown (coming up on "Hit Me") and also making a midnight appearance at Scream Blacula, Scream. On Sunday she gets a full hour interview with film clips. Tickets are still available for some of the shows. And if you haven't seen any of her 70s blacksploitation movies, you owe it to yourself to see at least one.

How did Pam Grier not get nominated for Jackie Brown?

Loving that pooch smooch by Mr. Hardy. Lucky dog.

brookesboy: Um...perceived as a comedy (even though it's very textured), unrespectable career with no justification for "career honours" and the film was initially perceived as a disappointing follow-up to Pulp Fiction. (But ANYTHING would be disappointing when thrown up against Pulp Fiction. See also: Big Lebowski's initial reception when compared to Fargo.)

Volvagia, very true the points you made. Although I believe she got a SAG nod, which made the Oscar snub pretty disappointing. For my money, Pam's is still better than Helen Hunt's performance.

brookesboy - we can't speak of 1997 Best Actress! although that year is at least semi-partially redeemed by Helen Hunt finally doing something Oscar worthy ... albeit 16 years later

volvagia -- all of those things are true. careers and reception of art are such fascinatingly evolving things. I mean Django Unchained was just... people were just freaking out and it is so minor as Tarantino goes. But by now he's built up such goodwill that he could probably do something even worse and still win "BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR" honors each time.

Nathan, I am still heartbroken over Julie Christie not winning for Afterglow. What an effing ripoff! I agree that the clips I've seen of Hunt in The Sessions stunned me--this interesting performance seems VERY different from the Helen Hunt I know and hate. And she's really charmed me on Letterman recently and the Spirit Awards! Seems like a whole nother person.

Pajiba names Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson's performances in "Don Jon" as two of the best of SXSW... Do you think JGL's directorial debut will find some Oscar love?

Reviews say it isn't as heavy as "Shame" and it has been really well-received.

Jackie Brown has become this movie where non-Tarantino fans proclaims it as his best work while also often being the one Tarantino movie outright dismissed, or just kept from the discussion of his great works, by his fan-boys (yes, even more than Death Proof- which I actually enjoyed more than Django Unchained). It seems there is almost a correlation going on there but it does seem to come down to this not being Tarantino's story but Elmore Leonard's story. That said, I wish Tarantino actually looked at the direction he put into that and looked on how violence against the characters were treated and look at his work since.

And re: Don Jon, I am just hoping it is not as conservative in its views of sexuality as Shame turned out to be. Wonderfully acted movie, but I kept on trying to figure out what McQueen was saying (and I am also in the camp that Brandon and Sissy were victims of abuse but that is strictly working on subtext).

I give Hooper credit for doing another music-driven movie but boy, him and SBC are going to have the biggest targets on their backs in the event that movie ever gets made.
