That Lynne Ramsay story is so strange but what is bugging me the most is how a lot of people commenting means that this will be bad for female directors in general, if a male director did the same thing no one will say 'this is bad for male directors' ...so annoying.
Still seething over Bigelow's Oscar snub. Female directors still facing that wall.
Poor Keira, Karl's films are quite crappy and superficial.
I agree Rami - female directors have it bad enough (STILL!), but the mere idea that one female director's decision can reflect negatively on the group as a whole is a serious problem. The fact that it could be true is hard to wrap my head around.
Have been reading all the reactions to August:Osage County!!!!! I think a 18th Oscar nomination is a safe bet for Streep.
Why, oh why must our dear Enlightened land amongst the rubbish heap? Maybe David Lynch will create an HBO show for Laura to star in. That's the only way this could end well.
I don't want to think about Enlightened's cancellation, it feels like a death of a person.
I have no doubt Streep will be good in August, but I wish some of the other terrific actresses of a certain age would get a shot at some of these plum roles.

I really wasn't for that! I thought this season was doing really well. Why the hell would they cancel Enlightened?
Also, speaking of Badlands and Terrence Malick: did you guys see that he is curating a film series for some museum in Oklahoma and that the list includes... ZOOLANDER? That's unexpected.

J.P.: Ditto what you said. I have come to view advanced word to be as useful as yesterday's sanitary napkin. A rough cut of a film screened in March that won't be officially released until November might be exciting but is no definite indication of how good the final product will be nor how it will ultimately be received.
And I absolutely adore the Stewart-McKellan bromance.
Enlightened had bad ratings and although Laura Dern is a great actress, she has low Q ratings. Not to mention the premise of high-up lady has a breakdown and comes back from a transcendental retreat for the same company at a mid-level position sounds so ordinary. And although Amy Jellicoe is polarizing to viewers, not at the same volume as any given character on Girls. **sighs* I hate rationalizing this news. Season 2 was perfect.
Looks like Lynne Ramsay has been replaced by Warrior's director Gavin O'Connor, but Jude Law has dropped out of the movie just hours after (apparently he was attached to Ramsay directing). No idea what the movie's plot will be, but the pre-production is being such a drama!
It's so sad. I loved Enlightened! Diane Ladd gave one of the best performances on TV last season in Consider Helen, an episode for the ages.
Fassbender also left the project along the way. This movie sounds like it had problems regardless of Ramsay's supposed temper or whatever BS got posted on Deadline earlier today. The movie's production sounded troubled for a while and producers are in damage control.

I read Julia Roberts was much better than expected in August: Osage County. Maybe that was the whole point of the screening. I know it seems like Meryl gets all the plum parts, but movies are sold because of her involvement. She brings credibilty and an audience. Harvey is already working for that best picture Oscar!
I was at the August: Osage screening (my review/reaction is actually linked in the comment section of the article). I went in with a LOT of trepidation as I saw the play twice on Broadway and I thought the casting of Meryl was very typical (I wanted Spacek) and was terrified of Julia in that role.
Both of them blew me away.
The film is in good shape. Some areas where the pace COULD be tightened (mainly at the end) but I'm telling you...it's amazing. Meryl and Julia blew me away.
Kim, now that you put the idea of Sissy Spacek as Violet in my head I am clenching both of my fists in rage that such casting did not happen. I will fund a revival of the play to just make that casting happen.
I think Sissy was the popular choice on this blog when Nathaniel had a post about casting...
But let me reassert that all my reservations about Meryl went away from the instant she appeared on screen. Seriously.
