Looking back at 87 should she have won for this totally iconic role,all respect to Cher who is my winner for 87!!!!

I'm sorry, but Cher was the best. Close never wn the Oscar because she never was the best, IMO. But I could live with her beating Cher, but I'm glad she didn't win for Dangerous Liaisons, a performance that I actively dislike.
Just a tip: how long have you been without seeing Moonstruck? Do yourselves a favor. It's an incredible movie with an incredible central performance. It should have won not only actress, but best picture too.
cal - I saw Moonstruck for the first time since like 1990 or something last year on the big screen. TOTAL CLASSIC. so underappreciated today.
MOONSTRUCK is pap and can only be considered a classic in an 80's pop culture nostalgia sense. CHER winning Best Actress had a novelty to it and the rejection of Glenn Close was simply the Academy changing the goal post arbitrarily whenever she met or surpassed the standards for a statuette merited performance.
Ah, Moonstruck! The feverish, magical love opera with one of the best screenplays of the decade. Cher was living, breathing brilliance in every scene. Jewison's best film.
3rtful -- it's all opinion but calling Moonstruck "pap" is to me a clear indicator that you haven't seen it in full in a really long time or that you just refuse to see its merit. It holds up astonishingly well and is basically an extinct species of movie -- about adults and for adults. Romantic comedies simply do not get any better. I'd stack it up against the screwball comedies of the 30s even it's that charming and disciplined and tight.

Nathaniel: It doesn't matter if you don't have a close friend called Dan. I have a friend who uses Alex's line to anyone, even if they're not called Dan! So don't let that put you off!
Re: Moonstruck, I just want to second everyone praising the film. It's brilliant. And Cher is brilliant in it. I agree with Nathaniel: it's as good as a '30s screwball comedy. And I don't think there's been a romantic comedy as good since it came out. (There is, of course, Notting Hill, which is as romantic and as comic, but Moonstruck has the edge, for me, in the writing and directing.)

I don't understand this discussion. Why can't we agree that Fatal Attraction is an electrifying moral thriller with a mercurial and (at that time) unexpected performance by the great Glenn Close, and also that Moonstruck is a delicious romantic comedy for adults with an inspired ensemble cast and a really good Cher?
My grandfather's name was Dan, and from time to time I would mutter this line to him at random. (He never seemed to get it but, curiously, also didn't ask what I was talking about.)
Nobody in the world (the real world, not TFE world) remembers that Michael Douglas was named Dan. Just use the line and put in any name you'd like. I wonder if people would even get THAT much, but of course you would have in the 80s.
And Cher was great and so was Glenn. But I think Moonstruck is the better movie and that probably tipped the balance. Wasn't Holly Hunter the one who got really shafted by bad timing/luck, or have I got my years wrong?
I have a friend Dan that works with me...right beside me in fact. I kinda want to have a big blond 'fro wig at my desk to put on occasionally then quote random and moment appropriate lines from Glenn to him! HA!
Dave -- no, Holly was that year too for Broadcast News (and i like to think it's a double nod that included Raising Arizona since she's so hilarious in it). also i take your meaning but i hate living in the real world when I have the TFE world as my pfiefdom ;)

I remember at the time that Fatal Attraction was considered kind of a tacky genre movie that sneaked into the Best Picture race, not unlike Ghost a few years later. Whereas Moonstruck and Broadcast News were both considered rather chic affairs at the time. I'd guess that most people felt Glenn's nomination was reward enough.
