8:25 Ana Lily Amirpour wins Breakthrough Director for A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. The other much-raved debut horror film from a woman this year (The Babadook wasn't nominated). Her acceptance speech is awesome.

8:49 Became distracted by my screener of Big Eyes. Amy Adams accent kinda comes and goes again. This time there's not a character reason. But for people voting on clips she has a mighty impressive one in a restaurant when she's had it with Waltz. (I'd had it with Waltz after 15 minutes but that's another story). When I came back to the live stream it is curiously muzak. Can't be a commercial break since this isn't televised. Curious.
Oh I guess they're having their dinner break. Which is funny because that's how I got distracted from the Gothams. I imagine that Ana Lily Amirpour is ignoring her food and exchanging numbers with Tilda Swinton.

9:04 Miles Teller & Oscar Isaac presenting the Audience Award which goes to Boyhood (which is having quite a good day after the NYFCC prizes and a special luncheon which I attended and which I will tell you about when i can rally a moment). Teller is much taller than Isaac but I am also taller than Isaac and I am not tall so perhaps this shouldn't be visually notable. Never mind.
9:08 Catherine Keener paying tribute to Bennett Miller. I'm confused that Foxcatcher is getting two tributes when it has no nominations. Me no likely. The double tribute for a non-feature nominee, I mean, not the movie which I am not crazy about but willing to give a second chance since I like all of his other movies. Keener tells us that he loves to quote Gregory's Girl. For an actress who has such sharp coming timing onscreen she is struggling through her jokes here. And she's even more mannered than Uma tonight with the hand motions.

9.45 Jake Gyllenhaal presents Best Actress to Julianne Moore. She expresses her respect for the other nominees, and gives special thanks to Killer Films who she has known for basically her whole career.

Tilda Swinton. Why am I even allowed to say her name?
Tilda proceeds to prove her immense coolness by being very generous and referring to herself as an alien, stressing the family-like nature of filmmaking, and pays tribute to the guy who did four sets of weirdass teeth for her for her four films this year. Derek Jarman is mentioned a lot (as he should be).
10.06 Jon Hamm is presenting Best Feature. Best Feature goes to BIRDMAN. Alejandro pays extra tribute to Boyhood and tells the crowd that he sent Richard Linklater an e-mail after Boyhood to thank him for "this incredible gift." Birdman and Boyhood are arguably the films to beat at Oscar (give or take the rise of Selma) so it should be an interesting season, don't you think?

Absolutely loved Tessa Thompson in Dear White People. The movie wouldn't work half as well without her anchoring it in the middle. This is the first time I've heard anyone mention her in Selma though. Does she have a substantial part?
Amazing how Keener's speech was approved by the organization of the awards for its length - it was 3 times shorter than hers. I absolutely love Keener the actress and find her cluelessness as a person endearing, but her almost being in tears was a little much - maybe i'm too cynical. Also, I disagree on her friend Bennett Miller, especially after the directorial failure Foxcatcher was to me. I believe he's slightly overrated. He's good, very good but not great: his biggest strength, his ability to be almost cold and eerie in his approach, is also his greatest handicap. Good sense of humor in his speech, though.
And Gugu's envelope skills have to be the worst in awards history. It took her about 10 seconds or so...
I meant his speech was 3 times shorter than hers.

The men's category is strong. Women's not so much this year. Hopefully the Oscars will produce some more worthy candidates. Patricia Arquette is sublime!

Tessa Thompson is always great. I first noticed her in Mississippi Damned, I think, which was criminally straight-to-DVD but is really fantastic.

I am sorry to announce that Julianne Moore will NOT win an Oscar this year (or probably ever) because I am rooting for her. And when I am rooting for someone (an actress in particular), they never win...not being pessimist, just realistic. After decades (oh! yeah I am THAT old) of being crushed, I am wiser now!
Did Meryl really look that good at the Gothams?
Meryl has been looking great lately. She can lose weight and look better, as opposed to Madonna or other performers who have not aged well and look, um, terrible without Photoshop. Foxcatcher does have amazing acting ... all three male leads were equally fantastic, which is unusual. It's thoroughly disturbing and well done.
Paul Outlaw I had the same reaction to Meryl's eternal youthful stylish gorgeousness -- I screen-grabbed an image of her at the podium and send it to a fellow Meryl-loving fan, and we then proceeded to gasp and pay homage.
San FranCinema et al--Meryl was on GMA this morning looking fabulous and a bit tired, but those cheekbones are Out of Control! I've said it before, she's got to be drinking the elixir...
Meryl Streep is still so staggeringly beautiful. I mean, really…what other 60 something year olds look this good while simultaneously looking so natural? Helen Mirren?
Streep always looks good to me, but she can be a bit frumpy at awards ceremonies. That photo looks all kinds of glamorous—the face is beat.
Amy Schumer's introduction to the La Swinton tribute was far and away my highlight. She was fangirling! It was hysterical and totally appropriate and flawless. And that retrospective montage following was pretty amazing as well and made me fall in love with her all over again. Her speech was pretty amazing, of course.
Tessa Thompson's win was awesome, I was living for it.
Keaton's speech was great and if he keeps that up, I'll be totally fine with his eventual narrative.
