SAG & Globe Reader Questions. Podcast Answers!

Last week's tidal wave of precursor buzz - most notably the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nominations have everyone talking possible Oscar nominations. Those nominations are still one month away if you can believe it which gives us plenty of time to keep theorizing.

You asked a lot of questions. So Nathaniel, Nick and Katey answered them in this week's podcast!

How this one goes...
00:01 BFCA Ballot Buyer's Remorse. How many times did Katey vote for The Hundred-Foot Journey?
03:00 Is Jennifer Aniston going to happen?
05:15 Robert Duvall and/or Selma's Supporting Bids
10:00 Humble Brag Jake Gyllenhaal Party
15:15 "What were they thinking?" & potential surprises
22:00 Julianne Moore's frontrunner status
27:45 Boyhood's performances & Budapest's momentum
32:25 Rewatchability. Does it matter? Should it?
37:00 Miscellaneous Last thoughts
40:10 Julianne Moore Stinger

You can listen at the bottom of the post or download from iTunes tomorrow. Continue the conversation in the comments. Hopefully though we answered your initial questions we raised even more talking points...

Please consider an immediate streaming format for your podcast. Downloading anything to listen to that is not an illegal leak of new Madonna music is barbaric.

What???

December 14, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermark

There is an immediate streaming format, in every podcast post. It's linked right there on the bottom.

I guessed the wrong Julien! We of course also love Julien Faddoul.

I never read the questions early because fresher responses play better on the podcast, I think. So I'm only now looking at the other ones that were submitted, and I hope we'll get to talk about those, too. Thanks for all the great prompts, everyone.

Yes, what Nick said. Your questions really made this podcast work. We should include reader questions more often.

Fun podcast, guys. Some thoughts:

- Wilkinson's accent was a little shifty, but he *is* beloved
- Ejogo's role is too small, and (did I understand that audio correctly) who ever claimed that Coretta was an "unfaithful wife"?
- Nick's gargantuan humblebrag? Spill.
- Thank you, Nat (Django Unchained)
- Thank you, Katey (The Reader)
- Boo, Nick (American Sniper, which I admit I haven't seen yet, because I keep passing up opportunities)
- Is Still Alice modest like Away From Her?
- Aniston and KStew the same year? Doubtful.
- Wes Anderson's A Nightmare on Elm Street?
- Pride and Edge of Tomorrow for a rewatch, for opposite reasons
- Robert Duvall as the lesser of two evils (the other being C. Waltz): sad, sad, sad.

I still think you are all underestimating Grand B to an extent. It's fun but also has real craft and attention to detail and it's not a flash in the pan. Anderson has a resume to back up the achievement. I see it landing a BP as well as some other nods. It is so unlike any other film in the conversation this year.

Hilarious podcast! Nathaniel, you sound like you are super done with the race (with or without applause!)

I'm not particularly excited this year. Everything seems so predisposed.

I can easily visualize Patricia accepting the Globe, the Sag and the Oscar. I'll cheer because I really like her performance, but I also agree that the ageing process will have a lot to do with it. I even think she's going to joke about in her speeches. "You give me an Oscar for getting old!" - that kind of thing.

December 14, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

peggy -- i'm not done with it. oops. wonder what i did to give that impression.

henry - i hope you're right. it has been creeping up my charts.

paul -- the unfaithful thing is right there in the film in that big heated confrontation between them (her one big scene)

Rooting for Duvall to get in so that Waltz stays out is so depressing. Obvs Wilkinson is preferable to both, but he needs some momentum.
And I kind of feel the same about rooting for Aniston to keep Adams out. I'm a big Amy fan (I actually think she's earned all 5 of her nominations, as rare as that is), but she doesn't need this one. And obvs Cotillard is preferable to both, but one of her performances needs to lap ahead of the other, and no one is making that happen.
Great podcast, guys, and your right about Imitation looking more and more embarrassing as time passes. Hopefully someone can make the right Alan Turing movie someday.

I think it's obvious Two Days One Night is the lead performance of Marion Cotillard for the awards season. And she should get the BFCA, BAFTA and OSCAR nominations because she'z really amazing in it and deserves it very much.

Nat - you mean his jealousy about Malcolm X, or was there something else? I took that as him lashing out in self-defense, as cheaters do. I don't think there's anything to that accusation otherwise.

An interesting interview with Mrs. King on her husband, Malcolm X and Selma: http://digital.wustl.edu/e/eii/eiiweb/kin5427.0224.089corettascottking.html

Great podcast! And thanks for answering my Carmen Ejogo question. It will be interesting to see how that category plays out.

I actually think, on the Julianne taking frontrunner status, is that we have to acknowledge that the voters pay attention to the internet. I think once the internet proclaimed Julianne in Still Alice as the frontrunner, it kinda came true. And I feel like this happens most years. The nominations come out and it's the same five actors for a category that the internet has been predicting for months and it seems weird, and makes me feel like voters just google Oscar pundits and see who's in the convo. I don't know. Interesting to think about in this day and age. I just feel like with the internet and the seven thousand awards groups, the element of shock is largely removed at this point. You're lucky to get one or two shockers on Oscar morning honestly.

And I get what you're saying. I was moved by Still Alice. But I've read what some have had to say about the script being kind of flat and I had to agree. She doesn't even have any friends? And the family around her seemed to a bit one-dimensional. But I still want her to have an Oscar so badly that I can't be too upset, even if Alice isn't as iconic a character as many of her other roles.

Katey mentioned an article in the Hollywood Reporter on actresses relating to Best Picture - was she talking about this? http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oscars-are-all-best-actress-745723

Oh Aniston's been campaigning behind the scenes. That's certainly been a thing, and those dual Globes/SAG nods didn't occur in a vacuum. She's enlisted one of Harvey's heavyhitters Lisa Tabeck for her campaign, and it looks like she's worth every penny. Get that Oscar nomination, Miss Aniston!

Adding onto my comment... I forgot to mention that I'm sure Maps to the Stars and that Cannes win didn't hurt Julianne's chances either.

Ivey - Yeah I think they were saying Jen was the only one really campaigning heavily and that's why she was able to push through.

December 15, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

They specifically said otherwise.

In regard to Juli-is Aniston the only actual threat to her winning? Jones isn't going to win for that kind of role, Pike's film is genre and hasn't taken off in the sort of way that equals a win, and Reese has already won for a film that seems to be underwhelming. Meanwhile Aniston has actual momentum in the race; could this be a Blind Side v. Julia & Julia situation again?

December 15, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

Loved this, you guys! You should do more random viewer mail episodes, you get some good material to talk about.

December 15, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

John T -- i can't imagine people voting Aniston for the win. It's a good performance but it's also a very mild low-key film. (Juli's also in a low-key film but it's way more potent, emotionally). I think people will be shocked at how low-key Aniston's film is. like the kind that in another year in adiffferent set of circumstances would have been VOD and nobody would have ever talked about it.

but good on Aniston for seeing her window and working her ass off to jump through.

Ivey -- i'm not sure what you mean. i can't remember what i said but when i was tlaking about the lack of campaigining I meant EVERYONE BUT. Aniston and Team have worked their asses off to get the nominations thus far but a lot of the other potential players have been super low key this year -- everyone kinda waited til the last minute in Actress apart from Jones and Pike has been the least active of all.

In supporting actor almost noone was trying which is why we're going to end up with such expected and in some cases really lazy results or why we might see a liot of Christmas opening weekend surges.

I just want to thank you for answering my question about re-watchability as a criteria for best films. I wish I could give all three of you a Katharine Hepburn brownie to thank you properly.
