TFE Mrs de Winters or Danvers? So little time to vote for these ladies without first names. It's Beauty vs. Beast
Google has Valentine's stories today, with simple line animations and audio, and they're just adorbs
NY Times film restoration isn't only for old hollywood. They also do porn!
/Film Black Widow film still being considered by Marvel Studios. But then, what isn't?
Coming Soon Ron Howard replacing Alejandro González Iñárritu in the director's chair on a new Jungle Book. Because a) they're so interchangeable! and b) we need another Jungle Book for some reason I guess.
LA Times what are the most memorable clips for the lead nominees. How to choose a key moment?

Extension 765 features a must-read list by Steven Soderbergh of everything he's watched last year. All I can say about this is that I LOVE THAT HE WATCHED ALL THE EPISODES OF "SMASH"
All Things Considered on the friendship between Shirley Temple and Bojangles
Cinema Blend The Spencer Tracy & Katharine Hepburn romance may get its own biopic. Take that one millionth, Liz Taylor movie!
Variety with her remake of Murder She Wrote no longer happening, Octavia Spencer picks "Red Band Society" as her TV series
Awards Daily "Meet the Academy" a pie chart
VF Leonardo DiCaprio on why he didn't star in Moulin Rouge!

To be honest, I’m not really prepared to do a musical, simply because I think I have a pretty atrocious voice

Bye!

P.S. Right after I posted this news update, Ellen Page came out. What timing.

I have a lot of feelings about the Tracy/Hepburn biopic, and all of them are negative.

I've seen bits and pieces of the original "Red Band Society" and it's a huge tear-jerker. It might be a nice chance for Octavia, although I would prefer something lighter.

I absolutely agree with the clips chosen for Adams and Ejiofor. Dern's clip is also good. I love when he gets to drive. Meryl is great during the long dinner scene, but I prefer her monologue about the boots she never got. Ignoring Cate's final scene is just absurd.

Okay, Leo, how's this: You're the lead actor, a mute man reacting to all the people around him bursting into song at the drop of a hat. We've never seen that. It could be cool. Think on it.

The Soderbergh list is from his site at: http://extension765.com/sdr/12-seen-read-2013.

What I'm trying to wrap my head around is how he's able to watch all those movies and TV shows and still have time to, you know, GET WORK DONE; it's unbelievable.

Soderbergh was watching Smash because he has big plans for latter-day Anjelica Huston.

...and then Ellen Page came out.

Tilda should play Katharine Hepburn!

The Academy pie chart is fascinating. When folks are asked to join one branch, can they switch to the other? I'm thinking of people like Redford and Eastwood, and other actors/directors, or screenwriter/directors, etc. And given the thousands of actors and wannabe actors, less than 1,200 are in the Academy? And only 5,400 in total out of the many more in the business? Weird.

I would love to see voting percentages by branch for past years, to see which group actually cares enough to vote. I'll bet it's executives, producers, and public relations, and not, as everyone suspects, actors. Anyone know how to find this data?

I was just at a small event with Jim Jarmusch and he told me that he writes down every single movie that he views. He said it had been about 300 movies in the last 365 days. I love it when people do this. I am completely interested in seeing what others are watching and love to share what I'm watching. Imdb is great for this. I 'check in' for every movie that I watch and now have a list of every movie I have seen since I began (complete with a little poster icon). :)

Nat, there's still an incorrect link: The one for the LA Times piece on clip selection leads to the Indiewire piece on Soderbergh.

Pam, I think I read somewhere that they can petition to become a member of another branch; however, most don't. That said, once you are a member of one branch and nominated by another branch, you are automatically eligible to vote for both nominees from both branches, e.g., Redford and Eastwood are both members of the actors' branch so they vote for acting nominees but they also vote for directing nominees.

Additionally, there are the people who are asked to join two branches when asked to join the Academy and must select which branch to join - for instance, when Sofia Coppola was asked to join the Academy, both the directors' and writers' branches asked her to become a member, but she chose to be a member of the writers' branch (but as a past directing nominee, she gets to vote for best director nominees regardless).
