Curio: And The Nominees Are
Alexa here with your weekly art appreciation post. This being Oscar week, all the alternative poster designs for the nominated films are making the rounds: see the nominated films posterized as Legos, or as one-liners! I prefer a less gimmicky, graphic-artist-inspired approach myself. Unlike last year, the Oscar site does not feature alternative poster designs; I do wish the Academy would follow the lead of the BAFTAs on this.
To fill the void here are my favorite designs for each of the nominated films. Happy Oscars everyone!
If you've seen others you love, please do point them out in the comments.

The Gravity poster is my favorite and the most improved over the original. It's been my desktop wallpaper for a few months now even though Gravity isn't my favorite movie of the year, just in my top five. The American Hustle one, or Bullshit, is quite good too. And the one for 12 Years a Slave is stunning.
My favs here are American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club, and Gravity. I like Her a lot too but it looks like they used a photo of Scarlett Johansson and that's tacky I think.
Now what's Christopher Walken doing on the American Hustle poster? Then again, Jeremy Renner has always looked like an extraterrestrial. And bullshit is certainly a good way to describe the Russell film.
@Willy:
It somehow seems fitting to include Christopher Walken in the poster of American Hustle. Not because Jeremy Renner looks so much like him, but because all I could think of while watching Alessandro Nivola's performance was: why is he doing a Walken impression?
Oh yeah, and my favourite of the above posters is definitely the Philomena one. Such a simple image but it manages to include the three major themes of the movie effortlessly (Ireland, the catholic church and travel)
I'd love to see a Blue Jasmine one, the subject matter offers way too many possibilities and creative openings.
I remember most the poster of Dallas Buyers club, the problem of drugs for AIDS in the biggest US state was very well exposed there. Great story and well done picture. Generally it is my favourite movie among all the nominees, moreover its advertisers did a very good job when creating trailer and poster for it.
i think the 12 years a slave poster is beyond. such a startling image and also fits the movie in smart way
That Captain Phillips poster urges me to sing "We all live in a yellow submarine"!
All of them are great in their ways.
@Sonja: Damnit, I was about to make that joke.
The 12 Years A Slave one is an example of a great image that would never work as an actual movie poster.
Nathaniel - Agreed. That poster is gut-wrenching.
Wow, were can I get my hands on these--actual size?!
"American Hustle' perfectly captures the fiim
