What is the Greatest Movie Ever Made Based on Toys or Games?

With The LEGO Movie winning rave reviews from critics (no, really) and looking to dominate the weekend, it's time to ask:

What's the best movie ever made based on toys or games?

My vote would probably go to Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! (1996) which I found so deeply silly on first viewing that I got the giggles in the theater and could not stop... even during the less funnies. We quoted it for months afterwards. Or at least we froze our faces awkwardly and barked "Ack" at each other when it seemed appropriate... which was all. the. time.

But then there's Clue. Soooo.... tough call?

Any other contenders? First person who says Transformers has to do all of our household chores for a week.

Wait...you mean you didn't like the Garbage Pail Kids movie?

I love 'Clue' and it would be a super close second. But my no.1 has to be 'Mortal Kombat', which is a terrible movie which is also my greatest guilty pleasure. Christopher Lambert! Haha.

It's a movie about a game! Jumanji! Jumanji!

Does 'A Town Called Panic' count? Even if so...still have to say Clue, but it's close.

1. Clue
----------
1000. Everything else

Pinocchio (1940--well.... its about a toy). And no I didn't see it in first release.

February 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHenry

I guess with no Pixar this year, we already have an Animated Feature front-runner, eh?

And yeah. Clue. *shrug*

February 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJake D

Definitely Mars Attacks!

Zathura : A Space Adventure. So fun and stupid

I'm sure we'll be asking this question again soon, when the 'Angry Birds' and 'Candy Crush' movies premiere. On the subject of candy-themed movies, how about a Candy Land movie? My only requirement is that it star Virginia Madsen.

February 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDusty

Before I saw a screening of The Lego Movie, I would've said Clue.

But I'll be damned if The Lego Movie is the ONLY film based on a toy/game that totally, successfully captures the appeal of its source and what it feels like (and means) to play with it and translates it into the language of cinema..

February 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAustin

Clue is the best. No question. And I like some of the other suggestions here. So, hm... would WRECK-IT RALPH count?

February 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Mars Attacks was trading cards though. Do they count? Clue is the greatest, then Mars, then probably nothing else, but there may be a lost gem or two amongst the rubble. I am so pumped for THE LEGO MOVIE though, I'm not even kidding.

toy story
toy story 2
toy story 3

(mr potato head, barbie, little green soldiers and various characters all pre-dated the movies so i will brook no argument)

February 6, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterpar

CLUE.

There is no other... except for MAYBE the parts of Toy Story 3 focused on Ken & Barbie?

(Jumanji and Zathura are both based on books about games.)

Oh AND, I have a similar fondness for Mars Attacks! I was 12 at the time and my best friend and I went to see it together - and laughed our asses off all the way through. We wouldn't stop with the ack-ack-ing for at least a week. I still love it just as much, for mostly different reasons, but damn is that Martian speak PERFECT. And I still want to dress up as the female alien for Halloween some day.

CLUE! Hello, look at that actressing -- WARREN, KAHN AND BRENNAN. What a trifecta!

February 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBrad

Clue is one of the best movies-period. But I cannot wait for The Lego Movie-it lOoks legitimately awesome.

And I kind of question why there haven't been more, considering the want to make films based on specific properties. I mean, Candy Land has an actual narrative on the board to work with.

I'm actually a big fan of the Japanese version of the first Pokemon movie. It was Pokemon, but also had a pretty sobering contemplation of the ethics of cloning, which is quite pertinent as it came only a year after Dolly.

And of course I like My Little Pony: Equestria Girls. The screenwriting was lazy and too predictable, but it was a lot of fun. And Rainbow Dash is awesome.

G.I. Joe Retribution. I kid I kid. Clue of course!

February 7, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTravis

The LEGO Movie! With "Mars Attacks!" a close second.....Not a fan of "Clue", I'm afraid.

While users who have migrated from Hotmail, Live, and MSN will find the design and features satisfactory, many users who temporality moved from Gmail to Outlook aren’t exactly happy with the set of features it has to offer and are returning to Google’s webmail service.
