Open Thread & Vacation Time
What's on your cinematic mind? I was worried you were all thinking about the exact same thing that we had neglected to write on until I realized the comments were malfunctioning. FIXED. So now that you can comment again, please fill it up the blog with your movie-addled thoughts. I'll be reading them and letting them marinate for inspiration as I soak up the sun...
I'm always totally burnt out post-Oscar, so it's time for my annual off the grid rejuvenation. Only a long weekend but it'll help. I plan to be in the water as much as possible and when I come back I'll hit the ground running, tie up all loose ends (the smackdown I know I know) and get to those April Foolish Oscar Predictions so we can start all over again. In the meantime I know the team has some goodies planned for you.

I saw The Immigrant and it's beyond expectation. I'm sure many with see the seams but the whole thing worked for me.
{Delete the original, keep this one}

I do wish Miss Turner could pull it together to make films again.
I was wondering if we're ever going to see the 2003 Best Supporting Actress Smackdown?
joel6 -- i mention the smackdown in this post. read :)
I got ScarJo on the brain. Everywhere I turn, there she is. Looking forward to seeing all her performances this year. Next stop: Winter Soldier tomorrow evening.
Oops! Sorry Nathaniel I only read the top paragraph.
I saw Meryl Streep speak at UMass Lowell on Tuesday night. A wonderful evening, Streep was as elegant and insightful as ever. Really a dream come true, although I did not meet her in person (I would have fainted). Now, off for a vacation too, with sunshine.
Looking forward to seeing Under the Skin when it opens nationwide - just read a great review about it in salon.com
In Old Chicago is on my cinematic mind. Not because it's a particularly memorable film - in fact, after having seen it only a few hours ago, I'm already forgetting it - but because I just realized that I've now seen every single winner in Oscar's Best Supporting Actress category. Strange that this is the only one of the four acting categories I managed to complete, since it's the one I like the least - sorry, StinkyLulu - due to way too many dubious choices, at least as far as my taste is concerned. Nevertheless, I too am looking forward to the Smackdown for 2003, cause I think that this particular lineup is way better than its winner indicates. And I'm eager to see what words the participants will find for Renée.
I love that bitch!
would love to see Kathleen Turner and Faye Dunaway given something really juicy to sink their teeth into again.
SIGH
Nat, wondering if you saw this about Meryl's recent career choices?

I know her choices of scripts/directors/projects get questioned a lot on this site (I include myself here), if this really is a conscious choice on her part, it's an interesting one for someone with her influence. It's just too bad that some of these projects couldn't be better, no matter who's writing or directing them.
Speaking of supporting actress winners, I just saw (most of) Butterflies Are Free last night. Goldie was great and Edward Albert was dreamy. I wonder why his career never really took off? He's almost believable as a blind person.
Saw a great new video posted by a classic movie YouTuber (youtubist?):

Makes me yearn for the days when you would click through TV channels and find some old gem that lights up your world. Now we have more access to these films (especially for repeated viewing) but you kind of have to know what you're looking for.
Enjoy your well-deserved holiday, Nathaniel!
I saw 'Jaws' for the first time last weekend, and now I feel silly that I never saw it before. Good action movies are right up my alley.
I put a bunch of Fassbinder on hold at the library, as I have only seen 'Querelle'.
