The Oscars aren't meant to be the Blockbuster Movie Awards (remember those?). Big blockbusters already get Oscar attention. No sense giving them their own category beyond visual effects. Look at how embarrassing those "genre" categories are at the Critics Choice Awards each year!

Weird Coincidence
Last night I asked The Boyfriend what he was reading and he said "this National Book award finalist 'The Flamethrowers'. It's about this woman in the 70s artworld and her Italian lover." And then this afternoon I read that they're making a movie of it and Jane Campion is in talks to direct. It's in the air, I guess. But The Film Experience is always YES for more Jane Campion. Let's bulk up that filmography which has been quiet all too long.

Earth Girls are Easy debuted in movie theaters 25 years ago today. That was before barely anybody knew what Jim Carrey might look like under his bright red fur but when everyone knew that Mr & Mrs Jeff Goldblum/Geena Davis were a hot mutant thing, whether crossing interspecies intergalactic lines (this), giving birth to larvae babys (The Fly! ewwww), or sending up vampire movies (Translvania 6-5000). The towering 80s movie couple (six foot plus!) didn't make it too far into the next decade, though, divorcing in 1990.

I hope Campion's Flamethrowers pans out. I loved the book, and it will make an interesting movie. It's kind of Sofia Coppola-ish in its privileged dilletante way, but I can see how Campion's touch could fit.
I would say I miss the Jeff and Geena combo, but really I just miss Geena. Come back!
The Flamethrowers is one of those rather cool, sorta experimental critical darlings that can be very frustrating to read but which can lend themselves really well to film. I'm looking at you, "English Patient".
It's Katharine Hepburn's 107th birthday today! I know that's a non-sequitur, but I had to share.
Rami Malek was VERY watchable in The Pacific. Didn't have a whole lot of competition, but he was easily that show's MVP and I look forward to his next big role.
Despite what Quesada said, I think there will probably be, minimum, two-three done in one episodes in that first season. At the very least, I'd expect Zebediah Kilgrave (Purple Man) and The Hand (those ninja guys from the Elektra movie), if not also Typhoid Mary. Unlike Spider-Man or the FF, who have fairly robust A and B list rosters, Daredevil, for a character as big as he is, has the second shortest end of the stick in terms of rogues gallery aside from Wonder Woman with a two wide A list (Bullseye, Kingpin) and a three wide B-list (the three I mentioned for one-shot possibilities), so a primarily "13 hour movie" approach is probably best. But at least Daredevil's big rogues are all treated with a modicum of respect. Wonder Woman's, meanwhile? Yeah, be afraid of her most noted villain, the super-powerful Cheetah woman who SLEPT WITH SNAPPER CARR. Seriously. (sigh) I'm more intimidated by Britanny and Brianna Diggers.
