Live from Comic Con: Teasing Crimson Peak, Godzilla 2, Blackhat
Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 5:40PM Anne Marie still here in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con, delivering unto you the major studio announcements via an increasingly busy LTE signal. Legendary Pictures was up after WB, ready to deliver on its name. Here's what it brought.
Godzilla 2
Despite the fact that Godzilla isn't even on DVD yet, Legendary rolled out an announcement that the King of Monsters would get a round two. Via recorded message, director Gareth Edwards thanked congoers for inspiring Legendary to make the film two years ago, and for ensuring its success. Then, they revealed the identities of Godzilla's next three adversaries: Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidora. That's 4 monsters for the price of one. Will Legendary be stretching its 100 ton supermonster too thin?

Last of the Mohicans director Michael Mann made his Comic Con debut to talk about his new cybercrime thriller. The trailer looked like a pretty standard thriller, other than the inclusion of Viola Davis (I'm so glad she's working, but girl get back to the Oscar movies)! Star Chris Hemsworth also happened to drop by, presumably because waiting in the green room for the Marvel panel to start gets dull. They talked a lot about discovering the world of hacking, but the

Anyone who misses Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth days will want to keep an eye on Crimson Peak. We're a year and a half away from it, but he still brought a teaser trailer for his gothic romance. The director called it "a living painting," with artistic use of coded color, and the little glimpse we got--Mia Wasikowska in white, Jessica Chastain in black, Tom Hiddleston in grey, crimson carpets and stained wood walls and the long fingers of a black demon--backed up his claims.
del Toro has trouble with the Con rule of no cursing, as evidenced when he talked about his love of female leads:
A girl falls in love and that's it? Fuck that! I want to find out what happens afterwards!
The director then baited the hall by asking whether we'd be interested in Hellboy 3. The hall went absolutely nuts, but Mr. del Toro, before you start, can I request a few more of your small horror masterpieces first?

Legendary also did brief panels. First, As Above So Below, a horror film in the style of The Blair Witch Project which is set (and shot) in the Paris Catacombs. Later Warcraft, which is based on World of Warcraft but indistinguishable from the game other than the fact that you can't control the characters onscreen. The presentation ended with a confusing trailer for Skull Island which clearly landed with less crowd-rowsing excitement than Legendary had hoped.

Totally forgot there was a new Michael Mann movie coming down the pike. That's so very exciting!
Roark -- it seems like it's been awhile right? was it Public Enemy? plus Viola Davis in a majorish role so i'm in.
Anne Marie -- i'm not the hugest del Toro fan but i am so excited for Crimson Peak because that cast is insanely top.
but also: why does Godzilla 2 have 3 villains? why do sequels always overload on the villains. Spider-Man 2 did it right with just two. Superman 2 did it right with the main villains being a group of sameys. Too many characters and movies lose focus swiftly. Unless you want to resurrect Robert Altman to direct a superhero movie.
And how long until a Godzilla and King Kong crossover?
Unfortunately, I don't think it can happen. King Kong is Universal. Godzilla is WB :-(
