'Mom! Streep & Julie are flirting again'

I can't resist putting these images in dialogue. Are the two esteemed actresses thinking of each other in their grey flat-ironed wigs, or is this a subliminal cry for a sequel to the sapphic wonders of The Hours? As Christian so correctly observed on Twitter, Nicole is never going to let a grey hair near her scalp. But she died in The Hours so she can't be in the sequel anyway.

This twinned image was fun to discuss on Twitter but after the fact it reminded me of an earlier conversation with Anne Thompson and Kyle Buchanan about why there are so many aged lady villains in YA adaptations. My contention is that it's their ageist way of playing both sides. So many stories about young girls that pay lipservice to "girlpower" are, just like stories centered on men and boys, still scared of the power and agency of (adult) women; these prejudices are deeply ingrained.

To complete The Hours threesome Kidman will also be having a strange hairstyle in an upcoming movie and while not grey is a strange style.

Clearly Moore looks better because there was a budget to make her look good unlike Streep who looks terrible. I cannot wait to see Moore be Alma Coin because hopefully it will open her up to a worldwide audience which sadly she has never really had view her work before.

I bet those wigs are the only thing we will remember in a couple of years. The movies look awful. I'm seriously considering skipping The Giver and I'm a Streep completist.

I think it's linked to the wicked old witches in the stories we hear as children. There are so many more of them than mean old men let alone warlocks.

And the hairstyles mirror that. How many wicked old witches with Naturally Curly Hair are there in the early childhood illustrations we were brought up on?

It'll be exciting to see Julianne play a villain... plus she'll share scenes with Philip Seymour Hoffman again!

But like Peggy Sue, I'm a Meryl completist who may skip The Giver. August has become a really good movie release month, especially if, like I, you live in an area where it takes a few weeks for the mid-July limited releases to arrive, and this just doesn't compare with all that I want to see in the coming weeks.

Skip The Giver. Painfully bad because of lead boy and pedestrian direction. It should be re-edited and re-shot, or just redone. Great story for kids. I am hopeful dynamics are changing for older actors. The Better Call Saul style is very cutting edge. Streep, Moore, Swinton, et al. should be really interesting from here on out, if given the chance.
