Red Carpet Lineup: The 21st Annual SAG Awards

Greetings, fashion followers and actress admirers! Anne Marie and Margaret here with the Screen Actors Guild Awards edition of Red Carpet Lineup. We're carrying on without Nathaniel this time, since he's over at Sundance walking some red carpets of his own.

Anne Marie:  Sunday night held few surprises awards-wise, but the red carpet looks were as wide-ranging as Tatiana Maslany's clones in Orphan Black. Without further ado, let's talk fashion!

Margaret: In terms of color it was a subdued red carpet, so let's start with some of the ladies in black and white: our queen Viola (VIOLAAAAAA), it-girl Emma Stone, the Supreme Sarah Paulson, and proud "complicated woman" Maggie Gyllenhaal. Which neutral getup is your favorite?

Anne Marie:  VIOLAAAAAA! Damn, she looked good. She sounded good, too. That speech was wonderful, and almost made me forgive How To Get Away With Murder for its grievous faults. Sarah Paulson, queen of my heart and the master of photobombs, is also rocking that black and white dress. I don't, as a general rule, like two-piece separate dresses like this, but she is... dare I say... bewitching. (Groan all you like but it's true.)

Margaret: I have to say, all four of these ladies' makeup artists deserve a serious bonus. Their faces look magnificent.

Anne Marie: True. Although, what the heck is going on with Emma Stone's dress? She looks like she's wearing an oversized suit jacket with a gauze skirt stapled on.

Margaret: Perhaps it's an avant-garde nod to her Birdman role, an abstracted fashion cape?

Anne Marie:  Sort of a Lois-Lane-by-way-of-Morticia-Addams kind of thing?

Margaret: Sure looks like it. If I'm honest, I hope her people pull her something twice as kooky for the Oscars. Liven things up a smidge.

Anne Marie: Any final thoughts on our first 4 ladies in white-and-black?

Margaret: Just that Maggie Gyllenhaal's cleavage keyhole amuses me, and that I'm almost sorry that Frances McDormand beat her last night because after the glorious stoneface Ms. McDormand produced after losing at the Golden Globes, I can't help but mourn for the gifs that might have been.

Now, on to our second lineup, the theme of which is WINNERS. 

Maternity couture, OITNB, and casting ideas for a gritty Little Mermaid reboot after the jump...

Naturally that means we have to start with Julianne Moore, reigning deity at TFE. We've also got Patricia Arquette, who continued her victory tour unimpeded, along with Lupita Nyong'o, who wins every red carpet upon which she sets foot. And though Keira Knightley didn't pick up statuary last night, she won most improved in a landslide. (Remember that wonderfully bizarre blue thing she wore to the Golden Globes?)

Anne Marie: Patricia Arquette is my runner-up for Most Improved, both for a dress in a great color that fits her, and for not using notecards during her acceptance speech.

Margaret: Progress! I agree that it's the best she's looked all awards season, and I hope this trajectory continues. Bring it on Oscar night!

Anne Marie: God remains flawless, and that sparkly green dress gave me thoughts of The Little Mermaid. Since Disney insists on doing new versions of its classic movies, can I now petition that Julianne Moore play an older Ariel in the inevitable live action sequel?

Margaret:  Ooh! A gritty reboot of the Mermaid franchise where Ariel is a disillusioned sea-dweller with a past, which possibly includes one or two estranged children.

Anne Marie: Mo'Nique plays Ursula and gets at least two musical numbers. Or do gritty reboots not include musical numbers?

Margaret:  Either way. We can pull Trish Somerville on board for the costumes, and instruct her to work in lots of opportunities for Juli to wear this color. She looks glorious in green.

Anne Marie: Lupita looks like a beautiful beautiful butterfly and I love it. Last year she brought jewel tones back with a bang, so maybe this year she'll make multicolored fabrics happen.

Margaret: Keira is really working her maternity couture. I wonder if it will be another nine years before we see her making the awards circuit again?

Anne Marie: Certainly hope not. Moving on! 4 Ladies From TV Who We LOVE:

Margaret: The difficulty level on Uzo Aduba's dress is high-- tricky color, unusual texture--but she is owning it with typical statuesque grace.

 

Anne Marie: It matches her sunny disposition. Speaking of difficulty levels... Laverne Cox's dress. What Barbarella extra did she borrow it from? The front bunching up does her no favors. Am I alone in hating this dress?

 

Margaret: The fabric does photograph poorly, but I think the biggest culprit is the fit. I bet if this had had a proper tailoring it would have been ten times more successful. Danielle Brooks, though. Danielle Brooks. She was much luckier in her choice of tailor, and she looks spectacular.

 

Anne Marie: Actually, of all 4 of these ladies, Danielle's dress may be my favorite. Natalie Dormer is representing House Tyrell in style, with the lovely floral pattern at her waist.

 

Margaret:  Right! Aren't flowers a.. thing.. for her, on Game of Thrones?

 

Anne Marie: They're the sigil of the Tyrell's. Grow Strong!

 

Margaret: Well then nice work, stylist. She does look super cute! (And in case you were wondering, this roundup is our way of stumping for Natalie to show up on Orange is the New Black in the near future. That partial-shave hairdo she was recently rocking would fit right in.)

 

Anne Marie: Question, Margaret: Of the options we've seen, if you were walking the red carpet, whose dress would you wear?

 

Margaret: I would love to claim the kind of panache of the ladies in the most adventurous outfits (Lupita, Uzo, Emma) but those clothes would eat me alive. I'll go with Patricia's, since green is my favorite color and that draping is a dream. What about you?

 

Anne Marie: Dresses aren't really my thing, but just because it looks so damn comfortable, I'd probably choose Lupita's. I wouldn't pull it off with even a tenth of the panache, but it'd feel like wearing classy PJs in public. Plus I could forgo spanx or supporting undergarments in favor of some well-placed dress tape.

 

Margaret: The wisest of moves. All right, that wraps it up for us! Now we leave it to you: Who was your Best Dressed of the Night? Who would get reprimanded on your version of Fashion Police?

I don't have any misfires in mind (I didn't watch, have just seen pictures). I thought Anniston was incredible. Loved Moore, Watts, Maslany, Witherspoon and Marguiles. I would like to think Stone looked better in person than in photos. Lupita rocked but I liked Viola's Globes look better. The red was pretty spectacular on her.

While the Red Carpet is boring in terms of Fashion Police (no one wears a swan anymore :(...), Joan Rivers would have had a field day with Rosamund Pike's bedspread of a dress.

I miss the swans, the bike shorts and the ballet mullets................

Lupita forever. It would have taken every ounce of strength that I had to not twirl in that dress.

It's puzzling...Rosamund Pike should be breaking out right now as an ascendent movie star, but her terrible outfits and forgettable presence aren't doing her any favors. It's baffling that such a stunning, talented, intelligent women who was so ferocious onscreen has been packaged so poorly as a star.

It's no help that awards bodies have forgotten Gone Girl. Sometimes people meet their moment and sometimes they don't. But when will she ever have more to work with than she's had this year?

Viola and Julianne look terrific. I love seeing the middle-agers steal the show!

I'm not normally a big fan of Maisie Williams' fashion choices, but her dress at the SAG Awards was wonderful.

Is it important for every actor who has a breakthrough performance or vehicle to adapt immediately into established star mode? Maybe motherhood has shaped her perspective of the spotlight now that it is shining brightest on her at the moment.
