Ask Nathaniel

We haven't done a Q & A session in too long. It's time. Ask your host a question. Get an answer. Maybe. He'll pick a handful or two to answer tomorrow night -- attempting a quick turnaround.

You may have answered this before but what are you two favorite Oscar wins of all time?

Mine are George Kennedy and Joe Pesci

In the last six months, what is the moment you've had in a cinema that has left you the most exhilarated / surprised / excited?

October 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLyn

What are your favorite slightly older badass female action heroes?

I ask after watching Captain America: Winter Soldier. I was so thrilled when Jenny Agutter (American Werewolf! Logan's Run! Walkabout!) randomly started kicking butt, and was so, so disappointed when it turned out it was ScarJo after all. Ho hum. There's a whole cottage industry around older male action stars (Liam Neeson alone in the last 10 years), but what about the ladies? To really lower the bar, how about any over the age of 35?

Is Oscar nominated/winning Mad Max happening? I NEED IT TO HAPPEN.

I MISS these Q&A's!!

What are your 5 favourite animated TV shows of all time? And what is your favourite episode from each of them?

October 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBhuray

What's your favorite Brian De Palma film, and do you think Nancy Allen deserved a bigger career, or was lucky to have had what he gave her?

October 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

Odds on Marvel Studios pulling a 6-10 nomination eventually?

October 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Suppose there's a Freaky Friday or whatever, and TFE does a Supporting ACTOR Smackdown. What 2-3 years do you think would be the most compelling revisit?

Spies and superheroes seem to be the top genres of late (plus maybe fairy tales); and we're about to see a winter season that attempts, again, to revive the western. Predict the next Genre Resurgence - either what seems most likely or what you'd like to see catch on.

What did you think of American Horror Stories: Hotel? Personally I think Gaga will need to step up her game, she is Jessica Lange replacement after all & those are BIG shoes to fill...

If AMPAS put you in charge of the foreign language category, what changes would you implement?

October 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

Two related questions (please...):
(1) When a country selects its Oscar rep for Foreign Language Film, is there some good ways of choosing the right one? For example, always go with a beautifully shot epic with big scenes and great technical achievement but so-so story and acting, a critically-acclaimed drama/comedy with great script and acting but nothing "big" to showcase just good story and sharp dialogue, or name recognition like how Wong Kar-wai and Ang Lee were always selected by HK and TW whenever they made a film. Does it still matter if that film is a true representation of your country's culture not just because your country funds (or co-funds) its production?

(2) If you are in charge of selecting one American film to represent your country into a Foreign Language Film race in an award show held in foreign country, which one would you pick this year?

If you could only watch 5 movies for the rest of your life, what would they be? If you could only listen to 5 artists for the rest of your life, who would they be? If you could only watch 5 television shows for the rest of your life (and you can finish out ones that are current), what would they be?

October 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

Are they're any classic Hollywood actors or actresses you have a bit of a blind spot too? Meaning in all of your movie watching there are actors/actresses you just don't have much of a reference for in either performances or in their films.

For example, I've been doing a lot of catching up on 40s Oscars nominees and winners, and I realize how few Greer Garson films and performances I've ever seen. She was a hugely formidable presence in the 40s and her films regularly garnered multiple nominations, but I just hadn't seen any of them.

Which movie character from 2015 do you think will be the best Halloween costume to wear this year? What's the worst/boring choice? What costumes from movies have you worn for Halloween that were your faves?

October 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJames

How can Grace and Frankie be improved in its second season?

October 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSteve

James: Not to speak for the blog owner, but I'd imagine we could be seeing some attempts at Doof Warrior costumes. Worst/boring/will never happen choice: Fant4stic version Reed Richards?

Name the 10 best child performances in movie history.

What do you make of all the fuss over feminism, humanism or "better a rebel than a slave" T-shirt quotes during the Suffragette press tour? This may be too interesting or challenging for one encapsulated answer, so please feel free to pass. Merci.

I love the child performances question. Auntie Em????

What is your favorite moment/scene of on screen nudity? And Why?

October 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAnonny

Movies everyone hates, but you love

Movies everyone loves, but you hate

Fave ever musical moment in film (as in, best moment of music in any genre, not best moment in a musical specifically)

October 12, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterbrooooke

Oscar voters are only eligible to select nominees within their own branches (along with Best Picture). However, when it comes time to vote for winners, everyone can vote in all categories. IMHO, I think this process of opening it up to the whole voting body actually allows for sweeps––which I kind of hate. I think this is why we see some oddball nominations all the time, but rarely do we see oddball winners.

Do you agree with the current process?

I saw "Brooklyn" but didn't especially "like" or "get" it and I wondered if NY transplants had different, specific feelings about it. What was your own move to NY like and how does the movie do in capturing the feeling of moving to a big city from a small town?

October 13, 2015 | Unregistered Commentercatbaskets

What recent Criterion Collection films have you recently purchased? I am thrilled with "The Bridge," "Day for Night," and "Dressed to Kill."

Oh, also "Eraserhead."

October 13, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPatryk

what do you think of SCREAM QUEENS?
I love its stupidly hilarious thrill and Niecy Nash is suprisingly the MVP so far, but JLC hasn't got any great showdown I think.

October 13, 2015 | Unregistered Commentercraver

the child performances question is good

Olivia de Havilland returns to film for her 100th birthday. Cast her in a project and a director :-)

Isn't this obvious? CONSIDER....

But seriously, I'd like to put in a vote for the child performances questions as well...
