People's Choice Voting Underway
Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 9:32AM This may be the first time we've ever mentioned the People's Choice Awards as I see they have no "tag" here and EVERYTHING has a tag here at The Film Experience. Obviously we don't mention them because they are embarrassing! But this morning, while waiting for the coffee to brew I chanced upon their "Fav Actress" ballot by way of Jessica Chastain's twitter and that woman has no shame (bless) about retweeting compliments / self-promotion.
And the ballot turned out to be not half bad actually as choices go as long as you ignore the one divergent option. This has to be the most Oscary list they've ever come up with right? But I still felt the need to fix it for them after the jump...

I don't know people who are into the People's Choice Awards but someone must be, right?
But just as their not half bad Fav Actress ballot lulled me into thinking they weren't embarrassing for a milisecond along came the FAV MOVIE DRAMA ballot and it is the stuff of multiplex nightmares.

While taking a look at the formidable list of drama movies listed here I just had a Quantum Leap moment with quite a few "Oh boy"(s) exploding violently in my brain. I think I may have a tumor now.
Why cross out Mulligan?
At least Jennifer Lawrence isn't on this year's ballot. They have something over the Oscars.
Will never take the foot off of Lawrence's neck until Chastain has her Best Actress Oscar and the circumstances behind it better not read Blue Sky / Still Alice overdue.
Who comes up with the nominees, publicists? Amusing browsing the categories and voting for people that are deserving but won't likely win (Regina Taylor, Carie Coons, Carla Cugino).
Honestly, Jessica Chastain's social media thirst put me off her. I can't deny that she can act but other actresses have been strung up for far less tacky instances of "too much."
She's Oscarless and close to 40. She deserves our sympathy not our scorn. A Supporting Actress win will not be suitable for her nor me. All she ever needed was one Best Actress win.

If Mulligan and Bullock are among our complaints, that's a damn fine list. I'd replace Woodley but the rest are aces.
Drama - lol at the possibility that Magic Mike XXL could win Drama. Straight Outta Compton and The Martian are the only acceptable answers there.
Neither Chastain nor Lawrence should have a Best Actress Oscar yet. That one clearly belonged to Emmanuelle Riva.

Mulligan deleted for Kidman, really?
I don't get the embarrassment. It's 'favorite', not 'best', and they need not intersect. I admire actresses like Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway and would love to see them win (or win again) for deserving performances, but I will always, always, like Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy more and vote for them when it comes to favorite polls. Now if we're pursuing the elusive artistic merit award, debate away, and I'd agree with you that Bullock's Oscar win was a bad call. But 'favorite'? I wouldn't bat an eye if Blake Lively or Amanda Seyfried made appearances in there, because we're not debating artistic output, which is merely one factor to consider when it comes to someone being favorite, and it's not necessarily even at the top of that list for many.
You just don't remove Mulligan, Nathaniel! She already has more impressive choices than Theron.
I don't think there was an 'overdue' narrative for Lange in Blue Sky. Esp since she was already an Oscar winner. Moore's work in Still Alice is stunning and I would have given her the Oscar that year regardless of narrative.
Lange's Blue Sky win was a narrative win. And she was overdue for a Lead Actress Oscar. Her Supporting Actress win was based solely on the fact Streep had Choice in contention therefore everyone else in her category knew they were losing. The Tootsie win is a total consolation prize despite the popularity of the performance itself.
Blue Sky's win seems more like a Blue Jasmine's win. Great actresses overdue for a lead win.
And bitches please just shut up! Lawrence and Chastain are Amazing and I love them.

I'm surprised Amy Schumer isn't on there for Trainwreck? And if Sandra Bullock can get on there without having had a film come out, then surely Lawrence should be on there, too? Weird.
That drama line-up is scary. So many financial disappointments (Focus, Southpaw, Magic Mike) or non-entities (Everest, The Longest Ride). At least The Martian is in the correct category, though.

Wasn't Jessica's 2nd win because it was the weakest year ever for best actress? Blue Sky would not even be nominated now.
Never cross out Mullligan! My god, if anyone, omit Hathaway. NO ONE deserves to be rewarded for The Intern.
Jono -- 1994 was not even remotely a weak year for actresses. It's just that the best performances were in films that aren't typically Oscary. or by performers they had something against.
What did Sigourney Weaver ever do to the Academy?
Death and the Maiden (1994) should have earned her her elusive Oscar. Jaime Lee Curtis could gotten a career nomination for True Lies. I bet all the other worthy performances that year were foreign language ones. I know Nick Davis likes Juliette Lewis in Natural Born Killers but Robert Downey Jr outclasses the entire ensemble with his work.
I don't understand the hostility toward Carey Mulligan. I like Nicole Kidman, but there were other actresses you could have excluded.
I made a few write-ins for my votes: Tomlin for Comedic Actress, Redmayne for Dramatic Actor, and Spotlight for Best Pic.

I agree with F. People recognize there is a difference between 'favorite' and 'best', whether the subject is movies or food or music or anything where people have favorites.
The choices are great in my opinion, good actresses that have been in recent films people actually have seen. All of these women have films that recently have been popular and where they have given good performances and many have other films coming soon. Why include some actresses who's work barely any of the people voting have recently seen? And people's favorites are indeed often different than who are the best. Surprising that Jolie and Lawrence are not here but they probably have been previously and I would not know who to remove from here.
