I love Fiennes, and since GBH people seem to be more aware of just how good he is.

I understand the newfound appreciation of Fiennes after GBH, but it's also been a bit shocking to me: anyone who watched In Bruges, which remains a tremendously popular movie, (or even Wallace & Gromit!) knows that he had tremendous comic chops, and he's been an A-list leading man for decades. I'm excited to see him in this -- as much as I liked him in GBH, I think he's best and rarest when sharing the screen with female co-leads. The word I think of when describing his chemistry with actresses is "generous." He's one of the best romantic leading men of our time, and that's because he is so uniquely good at putting that voluptuous gaze and intensity to use and making us believe that he's incorrigibly, utterly obsessed with the woman in front of him. That's what sets him apart from other leading men of his generation, and why, sadly, he's been rather underappreciated- like Nathaniel once astutely pointed out, Hollywood seems to care a lot less about men who are equal partners to their fellow actresses onscreen. Hope we get a feature someday on the best, most consistent onscreen husbands/lovers like Fiennes and Alec Baldwin.

I'm a little skeptical of the Ralph Fiennes gaze, because I think all his girlfriends die. The English Patient, The Constant Gardener, even Nagini dies. In Grand Budapest Hotel, it was a running joke that his girlfriends died.

I prefer an actor whose girlfriends have a better life expectancy. That's one of the reasons I like Russell Crowe. Russell will never let you die, even if he has to die to save you. I like those odds better.
