Eddie Redmayne and the Fantastic Beasts

Manuel here sharing the first look at Best Actor incumbent Eddie Redmayne in his first* blockbuster outing.

Yes, that's everyone's favorite ginger as Newt Scamander in the Harry Potter spinoff series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them which takes its title from one of the many textbooks Harry & co. used during their tenure at Hogwarts which J.K. Rowling actually released as a real book back in 2001, and if you've gotten this far and understood what all of those things mean, chances are you are the teensiest bit excited about plunging back into the world of wands and wizards. (And/or irritated at WB's shameless attempt at keeping the franchise alive).

And if you're wondering who's responsible for Redmayne's oh-so-dapper look  it's none other than the great Colleen Atwood. And if this is any indication, the film will at least be pretty to look at. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to shop around for a sapphire blue coat and brown wool suit.

*He'll surely want us to forget Jupiter Ascending.

I dig the whole look.

Manuel: Hey, better this than more wrist slashingly depressing takes on DC Comics.

I'm actually really excited about this. Unlike a lot of franchises, there is so much opportunity to actually expand the Wizarding World (not that that's a reason to do it! but some franchises don't have anything to go on and they keep on going). And this has a good cast and cool setting and has potential.

Can we also talk about Katherine Waterston in a franchise? What have we done to deserve this gift?

Expand away Harry Potterverse!!!!

"Everyone's favorite ginger"? *cough* Michael Fassbender *cough*

It's great news for all fans of JK Rowling. I don't think Nathaniel will be best pleased, but I'm proud to be a Potterhead, Rowling's world of Wizards is just more interesting to me than either the Marvel or DC ones. Bring it on.

Pro:
- The Rowling universe just has the best production design. Colleen Atwood, Phillipe Rousselot as cinematographer. It'll be gorgeous.
- I love the cast. Katherine Waterston looks just as good and era appropriate in the 1920s as she did her her 1970s film. I love Remayne, Perlman, Farrell, Morton, Ejogo.
- I'm glad that Steve Kloves is assisting on the screenplay. He and Rowling have always said they have a great rapport. Kloves' screenplays for the Potter movies were under appreciated.
- Rowling has such a juicy inventiveness in terms of character, and great skill in compelling narrative.

Con:
- The fantastic creatures were my least favorite part of both the books and the movies. Plus, very expensive, like the Martian inhabitants in John Carter (on Mars).
- David Yates seems to get enamoured of the best actor in the cast and focuses on them. Eg. Imelda Staunton took over her movie.
- Another least favorite part in the books and the movies for me was the oppression and tyranny of the political forces taking over the narrative. With the wonderful actress Samantha Morton as a punitive enforcer, is it going to be Imelda Staunton all over again?
- Why does it have to be a trilogy? Just wrap it up.

He's not everyones favourite ginger and I don't think you should lump Nat's readers together as liking him,I cannot stand him and the only red head anyone needs in their life is God.

Volvagia: Can't agree enough. Look at all the color and whimsy! I'll take wands over capes any day.

Mareko: I always forget to think about Fassbender as a ginger! Bad Fassy fan!

adri: I'm just glad Morton is getting such a high profile gig, but yes, your pros and cons pretty much sum it all up nicely.

Um, the pout looks like a bad Abercrombie ad, the kind they ENLARGE and hang in their stores. And I love Eddie Redmayne, though lately I've been more enamored with Domhnall Gleeson.

I'm happy for all things Potter. I really LOVE those books and the movies, all of the them. The movies hold up with endless rewatching, and they're like a who's who for British actors and actresses.

I thought this was just a Burberry ad with a wand! ; )

As a massive Harry Potter fan, I am unbelievably excited about this. Eddie looks perfect already. As a movie fan, I'm glad I have some distance now to appreciate other things, like how incredibly gorgeous the production and costumes are. I'm so so happy Colleen Atwood has taken over from Jany Temime, that woman lacked a profound understanding of Rowling's characters/world.

adri - you're so right about Yates's obsession with the best actor in the cast, I like him but I do worry too.

I also worry a bit about Kloves's involvement. I'll never forgive that man for his unhealthy obsession with Hermione, and how he tried his best to screw up every other character in the films so Emma Watson could have all the good lines.

He is cute in "The Danish Girl", but something about his performance left me cold... and don't really know why. I think i got Redmayne fatigue

November 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPetd

Huge Harry Potter fan and so super excited for this by default, but why again is every principal actor white? It's so glaring, especially since this is taking place in 1920s New York

November 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMargaret

Is it really a trilogy? Gag.

November 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBD

OT: The Chiraq trailer is out. Will that be getting the YNMS treatment? Because, to me at least, all of that screams YES!

November 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Joseph W -- LOL.

Mark -- while it's true that God (aka Julianne Moore) is actually everyone's favorite redhead, we definitely need more than one. Redheads -- even if they fake it -- are AWESOME. see also Nicole Kidman, Christina Hendricks, Fassy, Eddie, Rita Hayworth, Maureen O'Hara, and many more.

Adri -- great observation on Yates. if this means Samantha Morton gets showcased i will be so thrilled.

LadyEdith -- you're right. I am not pleased. I basically love it when franchises end because they suck up way too much of the movie culture. I'm SO SO happy Hunger Games is ending this year. sick to death of hearing about it. The only franchises that are welcome all the time are the ones that give us nice long breaks in between like the James Bond series. That can keep going till i'm dead hopefully. (p.s. i haven't seen Spectre yet but on principal i'm glad the James Bond franchise is unkillable)

Nathaniel, we can agree to disagree over Potter, but why are you so complimentary about and eager to see each new installment of the Marvel Avenger series then?
