Michelle Williams (x2) Heading to Sundance
Monday, December 21, 2015 at 9:00AM Manuel here. Michelle Williams has been surprisingly absent from our screens since she played Glinda in Oz the Great and the Powerful (2013). Though if you were abroad you apparently got to see her alongside Kristin Scott-Thomas in something called Suite Française? (No, it never opened in the US). That looks to change this year. The actress has two projects that will be unveiled at Sundance next month.
First up we'll see her reunite with Wendy and Lucy director Kelly Reichardt in Certain Women. Adapted from Maile Meloy’s short stories, the film will make its debut at Sundance and follows three intersecting stories of women in Montana. It co-stars Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart, James Le Gros, Jared Harris, and Lily Gladstone.
She also has a role in Kenneth Lonergan's follow-up to Margaret, Manchester by the Sea. The fillm follows Lee (Casey Affleck) as he returns to his Boston suburb hometown after a family death, coming to terms again with his estranged wife (Williams). Kyle Chandler and Lucas Hedges also star.
It'll be a nice one-two punch of a return for the actress, especially coming from two such exciting writer/directors; Williams thrives in these low-key indie films so welcome her back with open arms. And, of course, if either of these films get her glowing reviews, might the actress be angling for Oscar nom #4?

Sign me up for both - not for Williams (though I like her) as much as for Reichardt and Lonergan.

Too much goodness
Williams is an actress I don't mind leaving the spotlight for some time because while she's great in certain projects sometimes she pushes herself too far and her limits show so much. Meek's Cutoff was the last great turn from her and while the coming to work with Kelly seems exciting after their last two works the project with Kenneth seems iffy to me. It seems iffy especially the reports I've heard on the screenplay.
P.S. Remember when best actress 2014 was supposed to be a race between Amy Adams and Michelle Williams. Then came Julianne Moore and we all know how that race went for the better.
She's such an unpredictable actress. I've missed her. I agree, it's weird how she has virtually disappeared these past few years. Guess that Louis Vuitton contract was pretty lucrative.

I was certain that Lonergan's career was over after the Margaret brouhaha; glad he's making another film.
She was on Broadway last year in Cabaret and, I believe, moved from Brooklyn to L.A. after her run was over to dive head-long back into film. Why wasn't Suite Francaise ever released stateside? Hmm...
Manchester by the Sea is easily one of my most anticipated of 2016. I can't urge you all enough to watch Margaret and give it a chance!

Goran is right: Margaret is *the* film of the 2000s in my book. A perfect synopsis of America as it stands today.
I like her a lot, and I've missed her from the big screen. She's really put in some astonishing performances--Wendy and Lucy in particular. She totally deserved a nomination for that.
I think she lost a little momentum with the tepid reviews for Cabaret. I actually quite liked her in it.
I didn't realize Lonergan had another film in the offing. That makes me very happy. I don't quite agree with the "masterpiece" plaudits for Margaret, but it was among the best films of its eventual year and chock full of great performances.

In Lonergan I trust. Curious to see what he's done with Casey Affleck.
Also, Lonergan is working on a Howard's End miniseries, which sounds very promising to me.
And, I like Williams but I'm missing some key performances of hers. Great in Blue Valentine, obviously.
