Deadpool Pulls a Burt Reynolds. (Don't Tell Archer.)

Ryan Reynolds posted the first "official" photo of himself (presumably) in costume for the forthcoming Deadpool movie, which is due in approximately 11 months (expected to open in February 2016). The synopsis goes like so:

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

A gazillion bonus points for doing it so cheekily a la Burt Reynolds on a bear rug because costume reveals are usually SO unimaginative.

Burt Reynolds super-fan Sterling Archer would approve. Or be very jealous.

But isn't it weird that Ryan Reynolds, who obviously works hard to maintain one of the most spectacular bodies in the movies, keeps getting covered for the movies that require men have great physiques - i.e. superhero movies? First it was that all CGI costume for Green Lantern (blargh) and now a full body suit with literally not one square inch of flesh showing.

Burt Reynolds would not approve of the modesty (neither would Archer come to think of it) and if you are very young or tune out anytime anyone discusses stars from before your time, you'll see why after the NSFW jump...

I wonder when it was that American male stars got so weird about baring flesh? Burt wasn't just a nobody actor when he did this. He was a major star, on his way to becoming literally the most popular box office star for a handful of years running.

Perhaps it was the VHS / DVD freeze frame or the internet that got male stars all modest (for a time at least though they're being sexploited again to some degree) but not only did he do it, he seemed to enjoy being (literally) cheeky about it.

He was always asking for the ogling... sometimes for laughs, too.

The costume reveal was pretty unusual. For a second there, it got me excited that maybe this movie would not be as much of a run-of-the-mill, paint by numbers, catering/pandering (nearly exclusively) to a young straight male audience proposition. Then I read the description:

"Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life."

Yep, it'll be as formulaic as all the other. I wonder why they didn't get Liam Neeson for it. Unlike Ryan Reynolds, he actually opens movies.

Carmen: Unless it's a laboured fakeout, in which case I see two options: 1. The movie is actually somewhat episodic and the "hunt down the man who ruined his life" thing amounts to just being the opening or 2. It being something that starts before Deadpool shuts it down ten seconds in realizing everyone knows every beat that's going to happen, even in the "dark comic version."

Now as far as the idea of a naked Deadpool? Um...if they're keeping to the comics as much as they seem to, Deadpool is a mess who has multiple forms of cancer, one of which is SKIN CANCER. And that healing factor? Heals his cancer as well, such that though he won't die, he'll always be UGLY when naked. You don't WANT to see his skin.

Helen Gurly Brown revolutionized the women's magazine business with that spread. Cosmo stealing a piece of Playboy (and other's) thunder and making it work. But no other male star scored as big as Burt did when they tried the same thing.

So weird he got this role after the whole Green Hornet debacle.

Burt Reynolds is a burly alpha male. He was not being progressive putting himself on display.

Carmen: Where is the lie? Ryan Reynolds is the most vanilla, basic actor to ever be forced down the moviegoing's collective throats. And as this post notes, not even in a good way.

Gawd, 3rtful, you even have to be negative about decades-old photoshoots involving naked men!

Small correction: his name is Sterling Archer, not Archer Sterling :)
And Sterling Archer is the man.

I'm getting more Pfeiffer-as-Catwoman vibes from that photo than Burt Reynolds.

Burt Reynolds was also very open about being part Native American ("The part without hair." as he would put it.). He really embraced the notoriety the centerfold brought him.
