I couldn't really get into Bloodline. It felt like a CW soap opera without the beautiful people.
Bloodline is the first Netflix show that I didn't binge watch. The overused flashbacks (with a few seconds of new details each episode) became tiresome after a few episodes. I think the show would work much better in a weekly format. I kept watching because of Sissy Spacek. But she is severely underutilized and is saddled with a thankless role of an ignorant mother. However, the last episode does hint towards her having a bigger role next season.

This opening paragraph brings a smile to my face. I love that movie. It's always fun to discover people who share a passion for movies you love, but it is especially delightful when it's for movies almost nobody else seems to care about. Now I must wait and eventually soeone will do the same for The Holiday.
Also, Spacek recorded an incredible To Kill a Mockingbird audiobook. I hope is eligible for Grammys.
Does any actress (this side of Tilda Swinton) have a more pliable canvas, a more flexible visage than Sissy Spacek? I always have loved that she can look so ghostly, haunting at times (Badlands, Carrie, 7 Women, In the Bedroom) and so striking, glamorous at others (Coal Miner's Daughter, The Long Walk Home, JFK). She's a treasure.

Yes, yes, YES to the resurrection of Cybill! Alan Ball created a wonderful show about an aging actress who just wanted to work. Sound familiar? The actors are incredible, especially Cybill and Christine. And I love how the script and direction allowed the actors to breathe and relax and enjoy, not just hit their marks and spit joke lines.
More shows that should get the reboot: Picket Fences, Samantha Who?, Eli Stone, Up All Night, and Dark Shadows.
That Spacek interview was great -- I didn't know she used to sing, or that she had a role in a Warhol film. I agree that Bloodline needs more of her. I'm three episodes in and she's mostly just worrying about the curtains!
The Cybill post totally made me giggle. :)
I see Streep doing Streep in every role she played, I don't see Spacek in any of the roles she played. From Carrie to Coal Miner to Crimes of the Hearts and in the Bedroom, every role she played she is just that character. If you ever watched Night Mother and Crimes of the Hearts back to back (which came out the same year), you'll see how differently she approached two characters both suicidal. Too bad she doesn't get offered many roles and more work.
There's a great Chuck Lorre interview on YouTube where he talks about the shows he's worked on and it's damned fascinating. He talks about getting fired from "Cybill" and how he watched them win a Golden Globe for Best Comedy while watching at home in his pajamas. (He also claims that the show stopped working because Cybill wanted her character to be just as crazy as Maryann, and didn't understand that in situation comedy you need the 'straight man' role).
