SDCC Day 4: Will Deadpool finally make Ryan Reynolds a star?
Anne Marie here to wrap things up. With SDCC-regular Marvel Studios absent this year and Star Wars: The Force Awakens dominating like the geek culture behemoth it is, the race was on for who or what would take the #2 most buzzworthy spot in San Diego. Chastain showed up for Crimson Peak, Bruce Campbell was groovy in Ash vs the Evil Dead, but the most uncontested winner of second best was... Ryan Reynolds?
Yes, everyone's favorite B+ lister, who we at TFE Posterized just recently, was the antihero fans went mad for in the Deadpool panel. The obscenity-laced trailer for 20th Century Fox's R-rated superhero flick is probably the most universally-lauded moment of the con, drawing thunderous applause and virtually no social media backlash.
Of course, 100,000 geeks are at best a niche market, and, as studios have learned in the past, a standing ovation in San Diego does not necessarily translate into worldwide box office. We'll have to wait a little longer to see the first trailer of the Merc with the Mouth, but until then, do you believe the hype?

I know that photo is meant to serve me Burt Reynolds, but all I can see is Pfeiffer's Catwoman.
The Film Experience has caused me to think more about Ryan Reynolds in the last two days than I have in the last ten years!
Hayden W -- it's a sickness. Contagious.
Rick -- lol. we apologize.
I'm skeptical of both Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool. I absolutely hated X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the Deadpool character in that movie... I guess we'll see what happens.
For someone as marginally talented as he is, Reynolds already has been generously gifted by the universe over his 20-plus-year career.
i blame the stonecutters
Yeah, I just don't see Ryan Reynolds becoming a bona-fide A-list STAR at this point. I mean, it could happen (if it could happen to Sharon Stoneback in the day it could happen to anyone), but he just doesn't seem to have that certain mix of star power, luck and charisma that would put him over the top.
"B+ lister." Ouch. And spot-on.
(Hey, leave Sharon out of this!)
Nick Davis, I did not mean that as a diss to Sharon Stone, whatsoever. It's just that it took her many years and many films like Deadly Blessing to get that one role that changed everything for her. It could still happen for Ryan Reynolds. But it's all up to chance now!
The problem with Reynolds is that even though he's a handsome leading man with a killer body, his on-screen persona usually has a smarmy, bro-y, sarcastic sense of humor that will turn of just as many, if not more, people as it appeals to. It's perfect for something like Deadpool but doesn't always work in other projects. It even came through and was distracting in Buried, an otherwise effective, interesting project.
Reynolds is comic actor with leading man looks.
Deadpool might have gone down well with the Hall H crew but plenty of people outside seems to have disliked the trailer, myself included.
It also failed to make the top 5 tweeted movies out of SDCC if that means something.

So this is his last shot? It better work or else he can go back to Canada and fuck off!
Isn't he in a mask for most of the movie? Ryan may have a temporary resurgence from this film, but my general sense is that audiences don't dig him. Smarmy and conceited, very insecure and bratty. And why did Michael Dougls single out Chris Pratt and Channing Taun as virile, when they are just as bland as everyone else in their age bracket? Channing is a buttocks pinup and Chris Pratt is a very large infant. I can't recall any of them having convincing sex scenes with a man or woman.
Chris Pratt is convincing as an action hero in "Jurassic World"
