Did Will Smith really say that about Ali? What a dick.
Steven -- the line is from Will Smith's song "Gettin Jiggy With It" which predates the ALI movie by years.
Watching Streisand perform that song and others in "Funny Girl" as a young naive teenager changed my life forever. Barbra fever hit this gay boy very, very hard..... even though I was not very sure what gay was all about..... She left all other "gay icons" in the dust including my fascination for Judy Garland.
Yes, Barbra is/was the "Greatest Star" and her well over 50 years in the business has not let most of us down. Yeah, she made some odd turns here and there but every few years she would rise to the pinnacle again and again. Her concerts were great events but unfortunately obscenely expensive.
Those great Streisand movies in the 60's and 70's plus "Yentl" were amazing. "What's Up Doc?" and TWW were terrific...but something happened. The films all got very pretentious. Although she was lots of fun to watch in "Fockers" and "Guilt Trip" those films were quite beneath her....but solid paydays for sure.
If "Guilt Trip" ends up being her last film it will be a very poor finale to an unparallelled motion picture debut and career.. BTW, I doubt that "Gypsy" is gonna happen now... and frankly just as well. Barbra needs to latch on to a solid direction job or an unforgettable supporting role in a very classy film....or even TV movie.
Streisand should also be applauded for her charity work with Woman's Heart Health.
Her recording legend is definitely secure with many, many endless thrilling interpretations.
The vocal talent is unparallelled.
Since we are on the subject, RIP talented Omar, so long, gorgeous, ya done good in Funny Girl.
Max -- we just celebrated him the other day.
I've got two. F*** U
Yes, and what a great job you did!
Huge huge Barbra fan. Have not seen Funny Girl in many years - after watching that clip, feh - not really Best Actress Oscar-winning material. Looks kind of like early-days-Barbra-schtick. She was not Fanny Brice / she was Barbra Streisand. The Way We Were - yes. Funny Girl - charming, but no. I agree w max - she needs a great great film to wrap it all up. Perhaps a cameo as Madame Morrible if the film version of "Wicked" is ever made. Or, better yet....she is indeed the right age to play Norma Desmond if the musical "Sunset Blvd" is ever made. Our gal still has the pipes to do it. How glorious would that be - "with one look." I'd have to be sitting down with a hankie. Shame she did not win for "The Way We Were" - that would have been richly deserved.
Blasphemy (to all three of these pretenders).
PS. Streisand is now a quarter of a century older than Swanson, Paige, Buckley and Close were when they played Norma, so, unless they cast someone like Michael Cerveris as Joe, the age difference would become extreme. (And if they were to cast Cerveris, the relationship between Joe and youngster Betty gets weird.)
