Unfortunately it's fugly (not Carey. She pretty). Incidentally purple and green are my favorite colors but I never like them in combo unless I'm looking at The Joker.

I saw On the Twentieth Century a couple of weeks ago starring Kristin Chenoweth (one-of-a-kind amazing as usual) and you only have a few more days to see it (it closes on the 19th). The show was a little too manically staged for me but Chenoweth as a movie star and Andy Karl as her coattails riding actor boyfriend were both delicious and sensational and more than the sum of their parts. Unfortunately there's precious little quality video of Andy Karl online so here's a promo for his turn in "Rocky The Musical" in 2014 which seemed to prophesy the revival of that franchise - Creed coming at you soon.
For whatever reason Karl barely ever does TV or film (unlike a lot of other stage stars) so his profile is weirdly low with the general public considering he's funny, sexy, good-looking, traditionally masculine, talented and all of that. I was enraged all over again watching his extremely funny work in "On the Twentieth Century" as a narcissistic actor that Christian Borle won a generous second Tony for "Something Rotten" when his category was filled with so many better and truly inspired performances from Tony-less men (one of them even in his own show). The Emmys tendency to love the same people over and over again is much documented and groused about online, but the Tony habit of the same is even more mystifying since they're dealing with different shows and characters altogether each time. With the exception of a few people as default nominees, I'm deeply grateful that Oscar voters have somehow not inherited this usually* awful and stingy gene!
* there are people who have deserved multiple Tonys of course (Cheno, McDonald, Foster, Bernadette, etcetera). But... generally spread the wealth is a wiser and more justified impulse.

best actress is linked to bad posters that just have the actress in question in an awkward pose. Look at the last two years. Carey is so winning now!!

Love the love for Andy Karl here. He's a terrific and terrifically funny actor (he and Jessie Mueller managed to steal all of the revival of Mystery of Edwin Drood, particularly when they were paired as lovers at the end) that seems, despite his screen-ready looks and body, to be focused entirely on stage work. I totally agree the Tony should've gone to him- or really anyone but Borle, who was doing the same schtick he won a Tony for in Peter & the Starcatcher.
Speaking of new musicals, stay tuned for Come From Away (from the Canadian husband/wife team of David Hein and Irene Sankoff of My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding fame), which hopefully will get a Broadway debut sometime soon. Loved it.
I don't personally like purple and green together either, but incorporating the suffragette flag into the poster design makes perfect sense. I think it's a clean, bold effort.

Wow! You really didn't like Christian Borle getting a second Tony. Weren't you ecstatic when Audra won her sixth last year?
That poster could have been worse. They could have put the green at the top. But seriously I'm glad they used the flag colours. It's also a bit of a talking point.
Peggy Sue -- the cool thing about Audra is that she's a) a genius and b) she keeps winning for different styles and categories. so there's range there, too. Six is probably too many for anyone but I'd rather her hold the record than some others, you know.

In defense of the Tonys and Borle, I think the fact that his role was pretty much a lead role (categorized as such at one of the precursors) helps. And given that he was surprisingly snubbed for Spamalot, I'm all right with it.
One thing worth mentioning is that the Tonys deal with a much smaller pool to choose from in the first place. For example, there were what, a dozen leading ladies in a musical last season?

Just some gossip on Audra Macdonald. She went to see Bradley Cooper in the Elephant Man in London last month!
Totally with you on this poster, Nathaniel. The photoshopping is awkward, and there's nothing bold about Carey's image to complement the color-blocked suffragette flag behind her (which in my opinion is actually the best part). The font and placement of "The Time Is Now" seem ill-chosen... the words are placed on her body exactly where they'd be hardest to read. The decal behind the title seems like a floaty afterthought, and looks at first like a busy embellishment on the actual dress. Grim. It's like a weirdly ersatz ripoff at the amazing Michael Clayton poster. But, you know, I'm all for the movie, bring it on no matter what the posters look like, etc.
OMG could you imagine if Amy Adams were a Broadway actress or TV star? She'd have five Tonys or seven Emmys or some ungodly embarrassment of riches to match her Oscar track record.
I saw Andy Karl in "Legally Blonde: The Musical" but now I forget if he was Warner or the Luke Wilson part.
jakey - According to Wikipedia, Karl played neither. He played a few minor guys including the hot UPS delivery guy. Of course, Borle played the main guy (Luke Wilson's character).
That is one horrible poster- what a lame image... Andy Karl no only looks good but has a nice singing voice.
Jakey & Ryan -- his wife Orfeh was also in the cast of that show as "Paulette" but i think his real breakthrough was Mystery of Edwin Drood.a few years ago. since then it's been headlining (Rokcy) or way up the near the headline (On the Twentieth Century) gigs. .
I like the Suffragette poster. Bold and movie has great buzz. What happened to Rickie and the Flash promotion? Put Streep on stage with a guitar. Tick tock August 7. Actual Amy Pascal email.
