Emmy Noms 2015 ~ First Impressions, Comedy
Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 2:17PM While yours truly hasn't done the full statistical research to back this statement up it seems at cursory glance that the Comedy Series portion of the Emmys is ever so slightly less set in stone year to year than the Drama side. But with Orange is the New Black, last year's strongest new comedy, vacating the premises for Drama contending with Season 2 there's a bit of wiggle room here and there in addition to their usual eenie mini mo playfulness in the sixth slot in most categories. More importantly this past TV season was particularly strong when it came to new comedies. So many freshmen or revived series won strong reviews and/or much media attention (Transparent, Jane the Virgin, Black-ish, Fresh Off the Boat, The Comeback, Grace & Frankie, etcetera) that it stands to reason that the Comedy nominations will look much different than they usually do.

Outstanding Comedy Series
"Louie" (3rd nom in 5 seasons)
"Modern Family" (6th season, 6th nom - 5 previous wins)
"Parks & Recreation" (2nd nom in 8 seasons)

Similarities to last year: 4/7 with The Big Bang Theory missing and Orange forced to relocate
Potential Record Breaker: If Modern Family wins for its 6th season, it'll be the top Emmy comedy of all time. It's currently tied with Frasier for that honor though pundits believe Veep could finally dethrone it.

Surprise: Frankie but no Grace. And Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt all over the place but without the actual Kimmy Schmidt
Sorry About It: Gina Rodriguez and Jane the Virgin didn't fare well proving that Emmy voters still won't watch the CW.

ENORMOUS Surprise: Niecy Nash? I mean she's great on that show but in a really quiet way and the show wasnt getting attention elsewhere nor has she for other shows. The day's biggest shock? I think so.

I think it's very telling when a series nominated for Outstanding Comedy doesn't get a single nomination for writing or directing, but I won't mention any names...
That Supporting Actress field is tough. Krakowski is owed it. I'll be happy with any except Bialik, Bowen or Janney.
I'm glad for Niecy Nash. Her line reading "Miss Bertie, that's your lil' pussy" is the hardest I've laughed in ages and she deserves it just for that.
I'm really happy for Parks, Tituss and Lily. I didn't really expect nominations for any of them.
It's a shame that they never recognized Nick Offerman, but I guess they had to nominate the entire supporting cast of Modern Family every year instead.
If Tituss wins please baby Jesus let them play Pinot Noir on his walk to the podium.
My grief at the complete lack of Jane the Virgin (and Ellie Kemper) is mountainous. I'm too sad to even get angry about it. BOO, EMMYS!
Jeffrey Tambor is certainly deserving and I love Transparent. It does have humorous moments, but it's no more a comedy than Six Feet Under was. I don't care how long each episode is.
ALSO: This year proves beyond a reasonable doubt that the Emmys are just as big starfuckers as those notorious Golden Globe voters, the Hollywood Foreign press. Movie star on a TV show? Here's your nomination! Been nominated for an Emmy before? Welcome back, here's another one for you! Person doing great work who we've never heard of before? NONE FOR YOU!
TERRIBLE nominations all around tbh. Hopefully Mad Men sweeps and we can just think about next year when they'll inevitably do the same damn thing again.

I echo Biggs and call category fraud for Transparent. Is running time really THE deciding factor for categorization? If OITNB counts as drama, certainly Transparent does as well?
A lot of nice surprises this year, I think. Still don't get how "Grace of Monaco" was allowed to even be called a TV Movie when it was clearly not produced to be one... And Nat, do you think "Selma" helped Niecy Nash get more exposure? Or was her part too small for that?
denny: NONE of the Always Sunny in Philadelphia cast has gotten a nomination. I don't know if anyone HERE has seen the show, but if I were to sum it up: The core five make the Seinfeld protagonists seem like paragons in comparison ("She had Man Hands" vs. The D.E.N.N.I.S. system) and there's a clear flowing continuity with the characters.
@Volvagia I watch "Sunny"! Those actors have been doing great work for years now. Especially Charlie Day and Kaitlin Olson.
Biggs & Rosecityjesse -- yes, running time is now officially the determinating factor for Emmy just like episode count is now the Guest/Supporting divide. Let's face it. They had to make these rulings. Too many shows were doing strange things and even jumping categories to try and get traction. You can appeal but the only shows that did and were granted the appeal this year were Shameless and Jane the Virgin. (I have no idea why they approved Shameless as comedy!)
Eight nominees for supporting actress and none of them was Lauren Weedman for "Looking."
As long as Lisa Kudrow got her nom, I don't care about any other Emmy shenanigans. Valerie Cherish 4eva.

Quite surprised by the exclusions of Nathan Lane, The Big Bang Theory, Parsons, Tyler-Fergusson and Modern Family in directing/writing.
And they can't even sneak Hugh Laurie in there?

If so, I'm quite baffled by it's snub in Best Comedy. It's not so sad for Jim Parsons, who has won FOUR TIMES. Why not Johnny Galecki? He's so great as Leonard.... *sigh*

Whatever one may say about the decline of Modern Family, one thing is certain: Julie Bowen remains a goddess of comedy.
The best supporting actor category is great, Tituss Burgess is probably the funniest character of the year. I think Keegan Michael Key is great, but it seems a little weird to have an actor who's on screen for basically the whole runtime in supporting. Is it just the 'sketch performers always go in supporting' idea that put him there?
It's somewhat surprising that they recognized Amy Schumer, she's definitely a cultural phenomenon but it seems like the kind of show that they would continue to ignore if they didn't recognize it in the first season.
Also like the nom for Anthony Anderson, 'black-ish' is a really sweet likeable show, but to me the best part is definitely Tracee Ellis Ross.
I love Tina Fey, but this shows that they'll nominate her for reading the phone book (her Marcia Clark as a goon character is funny enough, but nom-worthy? I would have nominated the actress who played her friend in the bunker instead. The one who married Gay Brandon.)
Jakey -agreed. I love Tina Fey but that was hardly a shining moment for her as an actress. Many other people were worthier and she's been much funnier in other appearances
