Best Shot - The Final Episodes of the Season

Some News!
A few weeks ago we asked your opinion on changing up Hit Me With Your Best Shot into a year round but non-weekly feature -- to better hit movies when they're available outside the summer time. After careful consideration, we're going to experiment with the current Season 6 by extending it irregularly through October. We simply can't do it during the four intense Oscar months (November-February) as much as we'd like to... time being just way too tight. But for Season 7 I think we'll try biweekly from March through October of 2016. How about that?

NEXT UP...

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015)
*Monday Night Special September 7th*
Before the official kick off of fall prestige season (i.e. the Venice/Toronto/Telluride madness) let's revisit the most exciting film of Summer 2015 as an FYC for Oscar voters who don't often think "hey how about that sci-fi action franchise?" while voting. George Miller's long-in-production return to his post-apocalyptic desert world turned out better than anyone could have possibly expected, i.e. better than any of its predecessors with more adrenaline fueled scenes than 90% of what passes for "action" of late and fine performances from Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy as Imperator Furiosa and Mad Max.  [Digital Copies release: August 11th | BluRay/DVD release: September 1st]

We'll do two more titles in October and call Season Six a wrap!

A bi-weekly year round series? Yes! DO EET!!!

I think a monthly year-round series makes sense (even if I end up only being able to participate in 50-75% of the episodes).

HMWYBS is my favorite series. A bi-weekly year round with some hiatuses (maybe during the busy awards season) to prevent the fatique (is there such thing?) sounds about right.

p.s. Mad Max: Fury Road episode is going to be so much fun!

I would absolutely love doing a bi-weekly series. There are so many great films to do year round (YAAAAASSS MAD MAX FURY ROAD FOR HMWYBS) and giving us 2 weeks to watch and choose will make it so much easier.

Love the series and look forward to participating more!

As someone who plays practically every week, I like the condensed summer schedule, but bi-weekly year-round sounds like a good pace too.

I love the series and would like to see it bi-weekly/monthly. Honestly, I didn't participate more because I was disappointed in the comments. I didn't get many, and I had trouble leaving them for others. Maybe if you went with a monthly interval you could highlight a smaller number of entries at a time, keeping readers from being overwhelmed? That might also encourage readers to post comments on the individual entries at TFE since a lot of contributors host blogs with commenting disabled. Just a thought.

I've only participated in one of them (two as of tomorrow), but I'd enjoy seeing it as a bi-weekly yearly feature.

Wasn't Repulsion originally on the schedule this season?

July 28, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJan

I always love reading HMWYBS entries even when I'm unable to participate, so I'm all for it being year-round, either bi-weekly or monthly.

Oh my god, YES for Angels in America. I never actually finished watching it, so I will give it a try again now.

I have never posted in the HMWYBS shot series -- don't have a blog -- but just wanted to say that I LOVE this series, and follow along by watching the movies (if I haven't seen them), and reading the articles on your site and the participating sites.

So, just as a reader, wanted to chime in and say that I would definitely be interested in the series continuing more often. It's such an interesting way to look at films, and in today's era, I find that much of contemporary film criticism focuses on writing/performances, so it's great to have such interesting analyses of composition in the movies and how it conveys meaning through this series.

I love HMWYBS so I would like to see it become a bi-weekly series year round. It is so much fun to see the shots people choose and why. I may even start my own blog and participate in the future.

re: Angels in America

You could do six shots from the frickin' opening credits and write an essay. God, the number of times I read the play/saw it performed/watched the miniseries....

I think bi-weekly yearly is awesome idea! I can't participate in all of them because some have content I don't watch but I've really enjoyed the one's I have participated in. It's so interesting to see what other people pick and read their insight. Plus I would never have seen The Red Shoes or Safe if I hadn't been doing the project.

I agree with this suggestion: "A bi-weekly year round with some hiatuses (maybe during the busy awards season) to prevent the fatique (is there such thing?) sounds about right."

Wow, I already have my pick for MAD MAX. Done. And done.

How the almighty hell did I miss the Mad Max news? I am SO STOKED for that one, and I'm pleased to have retroactive justification for pre-ordering the blu-ray.

August 13, 2015 | Registered CommenterTim Brayton

FYI Mad Max isn't available on Netflix until 9/29. Shouldn't be too much of a problem as many people should've seen it (and should have bought the DVD asap), but just a heads up.
