Let's Go Down The Rabbit Hole Again

Jason from MNPP here with the latest dispatch from Kidmanville (Nicoleopolis?) - the Aussie goddess is set for a Rabbit Hole reunion! No she's not playing Galactus in the next Fantastic Four movie (although do stop and imagine that for a hot second, by all means) -- she's re-teaming with director John Cameron Mitchell on his next project, an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's short story How To Talk To Girls At Parties (out of his 2006 collection Fragile Things). Which is maybe even better than the Galactus thing.

I won't wade into plot details because I hate having too much of that ruined for me beforehand; you can read that at the link if you like. But I will say it's a science-fiction love-story set in London in the 70s, and that also attached to the film (as if we need anybody else) are Elle Fanning & Alex Sharp.

"Alex who?," you ask? He was the lead actor in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, for which he snatched a Tony this year. He is quite good, they say!

(Also of note: indie musicians Nico Muhly, Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu and Matmos are doing the music!)

The film will begin shooting in November and hopefully they'll shoot & edit & release it in time for this year's Oscars, so Nicole can pick up another statue of her own. She's totally overdue her second (and her third!) at this point, don't you think?

Kid-man desperately wants her elusive fourth nomination. I get it. I too want to be a Best Actress perennial (Nick Davis).

"glam-punk alien love story"

"john cameron mitchell"

this feels so right

The original Gaiman short story was, in fact, quite short - meaning there's lots of room for embellishments and tangents and surprises here. Weirdly when I read it the film comparison that came to mind was the sci-fi side of "Dude, Where's my Car?" and I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

I'm here for it, though I wonder who Kidman could be playing. Hopefully it's a substantial part. Anyone else feel like Elle Fanning is beginning to surpass Dakota?

I'm excited for a new John Cameron Mitchell film, even if it isn't that amazing animated film he was trying to make for a while (you know, the one about the grandmother's gramophone?). The cast looks good and the subject matter is just about right for JCM.

Surprised we aren't also talking about the great day Nicole had today with reviews. Her play in London got raves for her and "Family Fang" at TIFF seems to be doing quite nicely as well. (Anyone see it?!)

Elle Fanning and Nicole Kidman in a film by John Cameron Mitchell..... sign me up.

filmjunkie, JCM described Kidman's character as follows:

"Yes, I’m shooting a film in the fall that’s based on a Neil Gaiman short story called How to Talk to Girls at Parties. Nicole Kidman’s in that, too. She’s playing a punk rock designer and band manager. She’s like a Malcolm McLaren figure."

So, basically, this will be amazing.

I understand that Nat is super busy in Toronto and all, but we demand a post relishing in Nicole's absolute raves for Photograph 51! That NY Times review was nothing short of a love letter!

Raves for Nicole feel like warm hugs, after all.

Nicole is still in the movie business? Aren't all of her films box office and critical duds? I have great news re: Gypsy. Just kidding.

Such a great actress. Would love to see her in a Coen Brothers film with Meryl.

oops that was for the Frances thread. I am high on Chablis and about to greet my man in the bedroom. Good luck.

I think Nicole needs a film adaptation of Photograph 51 so she can pip a second Oscar, if her reviews are anything to go off.

Take it. Take all of my money.

I read that The Family Fang had gotten pretty good reviews in the TIFF. Do you think Nicole Kidman is able is able to score a Best Actress nom for her work inside there Nathaniel?

September 16, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterbluemoonz02

@Jason - Awesome! Thanks for that, I was afraid she'd just be cast as one of the moms or something, though I should know better given that it's JCM and the type of roles Nicole goes after in general.

I'd also heard that The Family Fang had positive reviews, although mostly highlighting Walken's work. The Guardian's given it a 2 out 5 stars rating, tho, so I guess it might be more uneven that it would've appeared. I've read the book and found it very funny and entertaining, but it may be hard to translate it to a different platform, particularly for a starting director. Reminds me of how This is where I leave you (also with Bateman, although only as a star, not directing) also started off as an amusing (if not great) novel but then turned out to be really "meh" despite the great cast.

Also, I know Nathaniel's uber-busy at TIFF, but I'm sure his Kidmaniac-sense will be buzzing after the mention of a new role as a punk rock desginer/band manager, no the less! So expect him to make an appearance in the comments soon ;)

Surely this is not Oscar material? It does not sound that way to me at all. Kindman'f efforts tend to flop however so the result is the same even if it was. And I was not aware she was considered due to another nomination. Or is that the feeling just in this blog? But the film does sound interesting.
