Golden Globe Winners: That Damn Bear Movie and the Martian Surge.

Technical issues with my TV and my phone and my computer tonight?  -- someone did some voodoo on TFE for the booziest Hollywood party this year! They suck but their timing is pure evil genius so we bow down. Obviously there will be a bit more Globes tomorrow but for tonight, a quick list of winners, super brief thoughts and amusing tweets after the jump...

We kick off with an image of an unfunny joke because it's so emblematic of the evening both because the jokes were terrible. (Ricky Gervais is the worst. And somehow he is popular enough to keep bringing back)

See there's a bear in the Revenant so Jonah Hill obviously thought was hi-lar-ious to wear a bear hoodie and claim to be the bear from the Revenant. Doesn't Jonah Hill know that the bear is is female? The surprise surge of The Revenant tonight -- which everyone (including me) thought was not in the race to win much beyond Leonardo Dicaprio's Best Survivor in a Motion Picture trophy made this fairly innocuous tweet hours before the show started from the parody account Revenant Bear look eerily prescient after the fact...

I mean seriously. Did anyone predict this movie to win the most prizes tonight?

Or no, possibly this tweet was the most prescient of the night

Because Ricky Gervais. Ugh. (I said this already. Moving on...)

This awards season has been wildly strange. At first Spotlight looked like a quiet frontrunner with The Martian as threatening populist alternative. Then suddenly female driven masterworks Carol and Mad Max: Fury Road started making bold moves for critical dominance (as well they should) with Spotlight kinda sorta holding them off. Then it the guilds were all but what about Trumbo and Straight Outta Compton and The Big Short. And Brooklyn and Room kept standing in the room but were knocked over again and again... like what are they still doing here? (clue: they've very good pictures). And now ... The Revenant? And maybe back to The Martain again. Each week we have to rethink everything.

That's healthy but it's also... strange. Because usually consensus is a mighty force that has no time for you personal feelings about "bests" It wants one or two pictures to take everything!

Very happy to see Brie Larson win. I hope it gives her a bit of a push--I would not be a fan of Saoirse Ronan winning Best Actress.

I think there's some hope for Carol. I know it's category fraud, but if Rooney Mara is nominated for supporting, wouldn't she stand an excellent chance of winning?

January 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

Watch as heads spin when Sylvester Stallone is not even nominated for the Oscar on Thursday. He missed SAG and BAFTA and that category is terribly up in the air and voting has already closed. They gave Gaga a Golden Globe tonight, it's not surprising they would've given Stallone one.

I do think Leonardo DiCaprio and Brie Larson are looking likely now, with the former nearly locked. Maybe Saoirse can pull off SAG and/or BAFTA but who knows. Also, wouldn't it be cute to see Leo and Kate with Oscars this year? Honestly, I think she could end up steamrolling this year with no clear passion and/or enthusiasm for other contenders in that category.

January 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Not sure if Kate Winslet has a chance for another Oscar, but I would be okay with her winning for Steve Jobs, and becoming a dual winner. The JLaw win was a giant, predictable whatever. She may not even be nominated for an Oscar, just like Amy Adams.

January 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJono

Metagame- even Streep's win for Iron Lady is better and more believable than Lawrence's win for Joy... At least Streep is making an effort to play a different character...

January 10, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjamie

@Joe: I can't imagine Winslet is any kind of lock despite today's win, so part of me is kind of hoping that Mara gets the SA nom at the Oscars, because she indeed would stand a decent chance of winning. Then again, I guess that's why they've fraudulently campaigned her in that category to begin with.

January 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBruno

I'm terrible at predictions, but it would shock me if Mara won an Oscar. She seems very chilly, both in real life and in Carol - not the type of rising starlet that appeals to the Academy's demo at all. I know she pulled of a surprise nomination with Dragon Tattoo, but a nomination and a win are two different things.

January 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

If any of the major contenders could be said to have come out a loser last night, I'd say it was The Big Short. It has been gaining steam of late, and many predicted that it could win Best Comedy and maybe even Comedy Actor too, but it lost both to non-comedy The Martian. Had it won, that would have solidified the narrative of its ascendancy.

January 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSean C.

Suzanne: I guess I read the wikipedia page wrong (saw the box office number instead of budget number) still think it's pretty weird to criticize a guy for making expensive movies when everything else he's ever made was pretty modestly budgeted.

January 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMJS

@jamie Umm, it might be just me, but are you saying Jennifer Lawrence in Joy is her playing the same character she always does? Umm, what part of the character is similar those in Winter's Bone, The Hunger Games, American Hustle, Serena, etc.?

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMacy

@ Bruno. I thought I was the only who remembered Brie Larsson from The US of Tara!

To all The Revenant haters. I know haters gotta hate but for my part, The Revenant is intense, cinemagraphically stunning and incredibly acted by all. Going into it I knew very little about what everyone went through in filming it but after seeing it I read some of the articles and interviews and my appreciation increased. Also, unlike many of the films nominated it's a must see on the big screen. I would also say the same about my fav movie of the year MM Fury Road as well as The Martian. I know there's very little love for the Revenant here at TFE but seriously statements like Innarritu is " insufferable" and "pretentious" and that The Revenant being awared best picture is "indefensible" are frankly ridiculous and seem a little pathetic.

As an Aussie, I of course was all for Cate, GM and MMFR for the wins. Fingers crossed for Oscar nods. I haven't had the chance to see Carol as it hasn't been released here, but will definately be seeing it in the Cinema.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJoanne

Brie and Oscar and Jon (Hamm) and Taraji and Matt! And Denzel's tribute! Good night for faves all around.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterstella

Suzanne , Mara chilly in Carol? Did you see the movie :-) it's the most relaxed I've ever seen her on screen I wasnt a fan up until that point.

Nat serious question why are you so down on Leo? I haven't seen the film yet is he really that undeserving . I am dreading going to see it now

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRami

Well, I guess my timing was good: I just saw THE REVENANT yesterday and THE HATEFUL EIGHT today. Both were better than I was expecting, but not as good as their makers clearly think they are. And definitely not as good as either SPOTLIGHT or CAROL. That said, I'm in the camp that kinda enjoys the fact that the Oscar race is a total toss-up right now.

Yay for Brie Larson! And hey, I'll admit I'm happy for Stallone and Leo, and kinda hoping Leo wins his Oscar finally this year, even though it was by far his least interesting role (even if most physically challenging) of the last several years.

Pleasantly surprised that STEVE JOBS picked up a couple of awards - that film really deserves more recognition than it's gotten.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterlylee

I can accept Leo's inevitable victory. I can even swallow the wins o J Law (AGAIN!!! GG really luvs them BIG movie stars!) & Inarittu (No doubt a make-up for last year's loss) but The Revenant for best pic???!!!! I wonder y they couldn't find in their hearts to honor much better films like Carol or Spotlight than this painfully self indulgent insufferable "arty" film.

My heart goes out to Carol. It wld've been a perfect ending to a glorious evening if it had won Best Pic.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

Yeah, "The Revenant" is solid stuff, not worth most of the vitriol its most ardent detractors send its way. If nothing else it is technically staggering, as immersive, minutely detailed, and ravishing a transportation to another time as Hou's "The Assassin." It has its issues (narratively, politically, certainly), but it's a grand piece of big screen cinema.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

i thought the night would be marred by the big short winning best comedy. it got shutout (mercifully) but this still managed to be the WORST globe telecast i've ever seen. due mostly to ricky gervais but some of their picks were just awful. i guss i should have figured it was headed in this direction when hill went up dressed as a bear UGH

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterryan

Rami -- who said i'm down on Leo in the movie? I think he's really good in it for what it asks of him. But i don't think the movie is much good.

anyway i totally bought all the suffering he does. But that's pretty much all that the film asks of him. Dying for some director to really challenge him again (a challenge for Leo would obviously be something light and spontaneous with intricate character beats. I mean could he even do something an ENOUGH SAID he's been asked to work in such broad angsty or big spotlit charisma strokes? I'd love to see him challenged... but i'm not sure it's in his nature to really push his acting. It could be that his taste just runs to very unsubtle heavy handed masculine angst movies... it'd would not be the first time an actor with a lot of initial range kept limiting themselves by how weirdly narrow their taste was.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Jonah Hill dresses as a bear is a little redundant :-)

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRami

I just read the other Leo post thanks for the clarification . I am of two minds about seeing the Revenant but the Oscar completist in me will now go see it :-)

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRami

Nat: To be fair to Leo, he showed some range with Django Unchained and The Wolf of Wall Street (he wasn't really "suffering" all that much in either of those films).

I'm also a fan of The Revenant. Not as much as Birdman last year (I do prefer Iñárritu when he has a sense of humor), but The Revenant is visually arresting and quite poetic in its simplicity and I just couldn't look away every time Leo was on screen (he's rarely had so little dialogue in a movie and it was refreshing to watch). I wouldn't have awarded it over Carol, Spotlight or Room, but I think it's a terrific film in a terrific Picture-Drama lineup and I don't mind it winning (even though I really don't want it to win at the Oscars, mostly because Iñárritu won three Oscars with Birdman and it's time for someone else to)...

Dunst loses to Gaga...what is the world coming to! What does she have to do to get an award! Did Kirstie Alley collect the ballots!!?

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRizz

Kate as I said all season is your s/actress winner.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMary

I'm still immeasurably salty about Gaga's win. I'm with Rizz in that this was not the Golden Globes. THIS IS NAZI GERMANY. I'm mostly hurt that Queen Latifah didn't win a damn thing for Bessie.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDerreck.

Rizz, give it up, Dunst did a horrible job on Fargo. So she gained weight, big whoop!
What does it matter if someone commits to a role physically, if they can't even say one line of dialogue that rings true. And don't even get me started on Dunst's atrocious "accent".

I've liked Dunst in the past - in Crazy/Beautiful she was amazing - and I love her in Marie Antoinette - BUT SHE WAS NOT GOOD IN FARGO!!

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterUlrich

MJS - I wasn't criticizing Inarritu for making expensive movies. I was criticizing him for coming to America, taking advantage of our economic system by making expensive movies, and then making naive pseudo-Marxist critiques of our government. There's a difference.

If you're going to use our capitalist system to finance your very expensive work, don't pretend you're a radical.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I think Ricky Gervais is quite funny while hosting the show (sue me.. lol)
The shut out of Carol pains me.
Thrilled for Lawrence, Winslet and Dicaprio, although NO ONE sees The Revenant and Steve Jobs winning big tonight.
UGH NO at Stallone, blegh.
Mark Rylance was robbed, even after Wolf Hall's miniseries win.
Voters laziness is portrayed by Sam Smith.
Oh my God, I thank you for letting Oscar Isaac win a Golden Globe, YAS! By the end of this year, he will also have won an Emmy.
Wow Mozart in The Jungle, now that's THE real surpise.
Lady Gaga's win will always puzzle me; it's so absurdly hilarious. You do you HFPA.
All in all, cookies for everyone!

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Fun stat: Amy Adams' GG wins are now sandwiched by J-Law's wins for Actress in Comedy.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

this is me stating the obvious: isn't it annoying how The Martian and The Revenant won awards they shouldn't have won?

Lovely, truthful speeches by Brie Larson and Lady Gaga.

The entire ceremony was mostly one huge problem. Unresolved.

Let's give Jennifer Lawrence more statuettes because Lily Tomlin doesn't exist.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

Mozart In The Jungle season 1 was so, so good - I'm about to binge-watch season 2; if I for one second thought the Globes meant anything I would say "richly deserved, Mozart!".

- Master Of None was brilliant, too - again, if I thought Globes was worth anything, I would say, fuck you Globes, for not nominating that outstanding show.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterUlrich

I STILL think Spotlight will win Best Picture. Remember the Globes are voted on by a few dozen 'journalists' who gave Best Picture to Scent of a Woman and Best Newcomer to Pia Zadora.

There are a few Academy members who actually vote according to MERIT.

But expect Sylvester Stallone to grace the podium on Oscar night and Bruce Willis and Chuck Norris will be thinking they will have a chance in the future.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBette Streep

I love how pressed all the Leo haters are, it's so satisfying watching all the meltdowns... He's so thirsty (bullshit, grow the fuck up and respect his passion for making great films, it's not his fault they usually turn into Oscar contenders. If this were, say, Fassbender, you'd all praise him for his "dedication", but because it's Leo, and you have this creepy and mildly disturbing hatred for, you revolt. You guys need therapy, seek help, this obsession is really kind of unhealthy). Leo reacts to a woman over 25 (haha aren't I sooooo clever??!!!??? LOL I make childish jokes that belong in an elementary school hallway, bow down to me!!!!). Take in that massive standing ovation and weep.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

@Anonymous Calm yourself. It's amazing how anyone who doesn't think Leonardo DiCaprio should have awards thrown at him every time he makes a movie is deemed a "hater". I know it's not a new thing, but goodness is it tiresome. Not sure I see many people having "meltdowns" over his win, if anything it's the opposite: most people who don't love him/the performance still want him to get the damn trophy so everyone will shut up already.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterthefilmjunkie

worst wins of the decade: jlaw for joy
lady gaga (jlaw of popstars) for ahs hotel

only good thing about it is the leo GIF and jlaw caught in the act of being a brat backstage

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermcv

I hate Jennifer Lawrence unapologetically so. But I watched the leaked incomplete screener of Joy and she had some graceful moments as the lead.

For those who still don't understand Globes logic reach back to when Angelina Jolie broke through. She won three consecutive Globes two for TV one for her eventual Oscar win.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Also, on the whole the TV choices were a lot more interesting and palatable than the movie choices. Haven't seen "Mozart in the Jungle" but it's been on my watch list, and very happy for Oscar Isaac, Taraji Henson, Jon Hamm, and Maura Tierney.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterlylee

/3rtful -- please stop bragging about pirating movies. it's unbecoming. artists deserve to be paid for their work.

lylee - mozart has been on my watch list forever too cuz i LOVE both gael garcia bernal and bernadette peters. i'm confused why i haven't watched it. i'll blame too many options on TV while trying to keep up with movies. but i recently heard that Bernadette sings in season 2 so i'm in. Just gotta carve out some time.

thefilmjunkie -- exactly. i wish so many of the leo defenders weren't anonymous because i'm dying to know if they're the same ones who constantly complained about Annie and Kate desperately wanting Oscars. anyhow... Leo has given at least two Oscar worthy performances in his career so she should definitely have one. I'll personally miss the funny memes about Leo's Oscar lust BUT so eager to move beyond this.so godspeed Leo.

January 11, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Puzzled why no one commented on Taraji Henson's obnoxious behavior. She seemed high as a kite and mean as hell screeching at the person who stepped on her train.

All in all it was an awful broadcast: from Gervais doing his same old shtick (please o please retire him from hosting duties forever) to Jonah Hill as a bear and the rankling narcissism of Jamie Fox and Tarrantino, there was far more entertainment to be had reading the commentary on Twitter.

As for the awards themselves, remember, they are given out by a bunch of foreign journalists and generally don't have a huge amount of bearing on the Oscars (though things like Stallone winning last night will def build a buzz for that certain Moment to occur again). Every year I watch the show and then feel sorta dirty afterward. Oh well, on to Thursday morning!

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRob

Nathaniel - I know it's probably a typo but "Leo has given at least two Oscar worthy performances in his career so SHE should definitely have one" is also some DELICIOUS shade.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterdenny

denny - typo.

January 11, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I never understood why people get riled up if an actress wants an Oscar and shows it, the worst case was the reaction to Melissa Leo's FYC ads, women are held (surprise surprise) to a different standard. It means more pay when negotiating contracts (but less than a man still) and unless you're one of the few icons (Streep/Cate/Moore) the window of getting nominated and winning dwindles after you reach a certain age (Moore being the one great exception last year). They get criticized for wanting it too much (Leo, Kate, Anne) and criticized for not wanting it enough (Mo'Nique).

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRami

Rami- It's the Internet. People get criticized for stepping out of the house and taking a breath because they might be taking that air from somebody else...

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRichter Scale

Jennifer Lawrence was shockingly rude and condescending to the foreign reporter backstage after her win. She is truly an asshole.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJay

With huge wins for The Revenant, The Martian, and Joy, Fox must have done a tremendous job of wining and dining the HFPA.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

Rami -- you're so right. it never fails. " there's always something to criticize a woman for" - he said sarcasticaly.

January 11, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

To truly understand the broader meaning of the Golden Globes, context is important. In 1975, Jennifer Jones and Fred Astaire were nominated for supporting roles for The Towering Inferno. Mr. Astaire won. Discuss.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

So: which would you pick if both were nominated for Supporting Actor?

Harrison Ford as Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens?

Sylvester Stallone as Rocky in Creed?

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenteradri

Web commentary was far more entertaining than the show. Agree it probably will help Leo and Kate build momentum. Stallone still seems iffy to me. An Oscar? Katniss was indeed rude backstage. Over her!

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMarie Antoinette

For the record, a "hater" is someone who has an irrational dislike of someone or something. Disliking The Revenant - which is not a great movie, certainly not the "best" of the year - or even Leo's performance in it, is not "hating."

I still can't believe Gaga was nominated for, much less won a Globe for, that mess.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBD

I've very surprised at all this dislike of The Revenant. I just saw this over the weekend and was floored by AGI's sheer filmmaking prowess.

January 11, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

I think many Leo fans are defensive because he used to be so hated around the net. That's changed, however. To younger generations he's a god.

I do not belong to the younger generations but I think Leo is the best actor. Period. And the notion that he - from Arnie Grape to Calvin Candie to Jordan Belfort, Abagnale and Frank Wheeler - hasn't showed enough range, is beyond strange to me.

But it would be pretty creepy if everyone adored him, so that's cool.

Still, I wish there was a net library with blogs and forums from when Brando and De Niro were on top. Wouldn't that be an interesting read?
