Gervais is Golden again

Bucking the would be trend of hostless awards ceremonies, Ricky Gervais will host the Golden Globes this year on January 5th on NBC. The ceremony is noteably two days before final Oscar ballots are due so those speeches could matter. This is the fifth time Gervais has hosted and his blurb sounds threatening if you know how harsh his humour can get with Hollywood’s A list…

This is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening.”

We like the idea of Hollywood titans having a sense of humor about themselves but we much prefer the kind of ribbing that say Tina Fey & Amy Poehler are willing to do than the more scorched earth vibe of Gervais. But to each their own. Perhaps some of you love Gervais in this particular gig? If so speak up and tell us why.

Reporting From The Edge of Oblivion

Team Experience still reporting from the just-wrapped Tribeca Film Festival. Here's Jason on 'Special Correspondents' and the doc 'Obit.'

Do you ever watch a scene and just feel terrible for the actor being forced to deliver the dialogue they're being forced to deliver? There's a scene in Special Correspondents - a triviality that played Tribeca just before debuting on Netflix later this week, starring Ricky Gervais (who wrote and directed) and Eric Bana as a pair of journalists faking their war reports from the comfort of a Queens attic - that had me feeling just awful for one of its actors.

Golden Globe Winners: That Damn Bear Movie and the Martian Surge.

Technical issues with my TV and my phone and my computer tonight?  -- someone did some voodoo on TFE for the booziest Hollywood party this year! They suck but their timing is pure evil genius so we bow down. Obviously there will be a bit more Globes tomorrow but for tonight, a quick list of winners, super brief thoughts and amusing tweets after the jump...

And Your Golden Globe Host Is... Ricky Gervais

Hi everyone. Coco here, wondering how you guys feel about this year's Golden Globe host announcement.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association made the announcement yesterday on Twitter: Ricky Gervais will return to host the Golden Globes for a fourth time.

Gervais is back after a three year hiatus. Those three years, of course, are what we common folk refer to as the "Tina and Amy Era". And with good reason. Sure, their third time hosting was a relative letdown compared to the first two glorious times, but ask anyone on the street and they'll agree Tina and Amy are still among the best Award Show hosts of the past ten years or so. But let's go back to Ricky.

Gervais has an interesting history with the Globes. He was the first person to host the ceremony since 1995 (when John Larroquette and Janine Turner shared the honors), and he made headlines thanks to his unsavory jokes. Every entertainment outlet seemd to be talking about how Gervais poked fun at Robert Downey Jr. and Mel Gibson's histories of substance abuse, and for a while there, people tuned in to the Globes to see what inaproppriate thing Gervais was going to say next, instead of tuning in for the right reasons (which, by the way, are the fashion and the opportunity to see drunk celebrities interact with each other).

But just like anything that coasts on shock value, Gervais's popularity could only last for so long. By the time Gervais hosted for the third time, his schtick was old news.

But what do you think? Is Gervais's comeback a boring choice? Or are you actually excited about his return?
