Can a Good Speech Save An Oscar Campaign?

by Cláudio Alves

Remember when Meryl Streep received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2017 Golden Globes? Her speech was one for the ages, full of good humor, pathos and a riveting call to arms. So titanic was this acceptance speech that, to this day, I believe that it's what secured a Best Actress Oscar nomination for Florence Foster Jenkins. The performance did get a lot of precursor love, but growing Streep fatigue and a stacked race seemed like indicators of an incoming snub. Then, the Golden Globes happened, right at the end of Oscar voting, and it all changed.

Her speech saved her campaign, even though that wasn't the intention of the gesture, and turned her into a lock many didn't see coming until nomination morning arrived. This year, Tom Hanks might follow in Streep's steps…

Golden Globe Predictions - Let's do it!

It's that time of year. The Golden Globe nominations arrive on Monday morning so it's time to throw caution to the wind and try and predict the ever unpredictable HFPA whims. I'm opting for double nods for both Scarlett Johannson (duh) and Shia Labeouf (whaaa?)

PICTURE DRAMA PICTURE COMEDY/ MUSICAL

• 1917
• Ford V Ferrari
• The Irishman
• Little Women
• Marriage Story

Potential Spoilers: Decided to predict Ford V Ferrari because the Globes usually surprise somewhere but in actuality The Two Popes or Joker OR BOTH are safer bets.

• Cats
• Jojo Rabbit
• Knives Out
• Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
• Rocketman

Potential Spoilers: Booksmart, Dolemite is My Name, Hustlers

Gervais is Golden again

Bucking the would be trend of hostless awards ceremonies, Ricky Gervais will host the Golden Globes this year on January 5th on NBC. The ceremony is noteably two days before final Oscar ballots are due so those speeches could matter. This is the fifth time Gervais has hosted and his blurb sounds threatening if you know how harsh his humour can get with Hollywood’s A list…

This is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening.”

We like the idea of Hollywood titans having a sense of humor about themselves but we much prefer the kind of ribbing that say Tina Fey & Amy Poehler are willing to do than the more scorched earth vibe of Gervais. But to each their own. Perhaps some of you love Gervais in this particular gig? If so speak up and tell us why.

"The Two Popes" rising...

by Nathaniel R

"I have four more Oscars nominations than you. I've also won!"

Yours truly is still trying to get back into the swing of daily life after the always delightful Middleburg Film Festival. At the conclusion of the festival, the votes were counted and The Two Popes emerged as the Audience Award winner. You may recall that Green Book won that prize just last year before it went on to very leggy box office (final international tally $321.7 million on only a $23 million budget) and the Best Picture Oscar win.

The Two Popes is a less controversial crowd-pleaser and surely an Oscar nomination threat for two categories...

(You're Gonna) Love it Again - Rocketman!

by Nathaniel R

Kudos to Paramount to beating the Rocketman drums again with a screening and performance in Los Angeles yesterday. Early releases require this sort of care and attention from their home studios, come awards season. Rocketman emerged in the giant shadow of Bohemian Rhapsody this past May, and though it is vastly superior to the Queen picture in every way, shadows are shadows and sometimes they obscure the light...
