Golden Globe Predictions - Let's do it!

It's that time of year. The Golden Globe nominations arrive on Monday morning so it's time to throw caution to the wind and try and predict the ever unpredictable HFPA whims. I'm opting for double nods for both Scarlett Johannson (duh) and Shia Labeouf (whaaa?)

PICTURE DRAMA PICTURE COMEDY/ MUSICAL

• 1917
• Ford V Ferrari
• The Irishman
• Little Women
• Marriage Story

Potential Spoilers: Decided to predict Ford V Ferrari because the Globes usually surprise somewhere but in actuality The Two Popes or Joker OR BOTH are safer bets.

• Cats
• Jojo Rabbit
• Knives Out
• Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
• Rocketman

Potential Spoilers: Booksmart, Dolemite is My Name, Hustlers

LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA  LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY/MUSICAL

• Scarlet Johansson, Marriage Story
• Lupita Nyong'o, Us
• Saoirse Ronan, Little Women
• Charlize Theron, Bombshell
• Renee Zellweger, Judy

Potential Spoilers: Cynthia Erivo (Harriet),  Alfre Woodard (Clemency), Elisabeth Moss (Her Smell), Julianne Moore (Gloria Bell)

• Awkwafina, The Farewell
• Ana de Armas, Knives Out
• Beanie Feldstein, Booksmart
• Emma Thompson, Late Night
• Constance Wu, Hustlers

Potential Spoilers: REALLY hoping they surprise with a double acting nods for Booksmart but Kaitlin Dever (Booksmart) isnt as famous as Beanie. Or it might be Jillian Bell (Brittany Runs a Marathon), or Francesca Hayward (Cats)

LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY/MUSICAL

• Christian Bale, Ford V Ferrari
• Antonio Banderas, Pain & Glory
• Robert DeNiro, The Irishman
• Adam Driver, Marriage Story
• Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
• Jonathan Pryce, Two Popes

Potential Spoilers: I'm predicting six people since the Globes sometimes do that and couldn't decide who to cut. But Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems) or Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse) could surprise.

• Daniel Craig, Knives Out
• Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time...
• Taron Egerton, Rocketman
• Shia Labeouf, Peanut Butter Falcon
• Eddie Murphy, Dolemite is My Name

Potential Spoilers: Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit)

A barrren field this year so they really should have promoted Brad Pitt to lead for Once Upon a Time (where he belongs) for a double nod for that film.
 OTHER CATEGORIES
 SUPPORTING ACTRESS  SUPPORTING ACTOR

• Kathy Bates, Richard Jewell
• Laura Dern, Marriage Story
• Scarlett Johansson, Jojo Rabbit
• Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers
• Margot Robbie, Bombshell

Potential Spoilers: We don't think they'll rock the expected contenders boat too much in Supporting Actress but we do think they won't be able to resist a double ScarJo dip. But maybe... Smith (Downton Abbey), McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit), Shuzhen (The Farewell)

• Tom Hanks, A Beautiful Day
• Anthony Hopkins, Two Popes
• Shia Labeouf, Honey Boy
• Al Pacino, Irishman
• Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time...

Potential Spoilers: If there's one place where the Labeouf narrative might really take hold it's the Globes. But it really could be anyone like Pesci (Irishman), Elba (Cats), Dafoe (Lighthouse), Snipes (Dolemite), or our beloved Alan Alda (Marriage Story)

 DIRECTOR   SCREENPLAY

• Baumbach, Marriage Story
• Bong, Parasite
• Gerwig, Little Women
• Scorsese, The Irishman
• Tarantino, Once Upon a Time...

Potential Spoilers: I dont think they'll be able to resist pairing Baumbach & Gerwig... but what of Almodovar (Pain & Glory), Waititi (Jojo Rabbit), Mendes (1917)?

• The Irishman
• Little Women
• Marriage Story
• Once Upon a Time in...
• The Two Popes

Potential Spoilers: Parasite, Pain and Glory, The Farewell, Jojo Rabbit

 FOREIGN FILM ANIMATED FILM

• The Farewell (US)
• Les Miserables (France)
• Pain and Glory (Spain)
• Parasite (South Korea)
• Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Potential Spoiler: It could literallly be anything. There are dozens upon dozens of possibilities.

• Frozen 2
• How To Train Your Dragon
• I Lost My Body
• Klaus
• Toy Story 4

Potential Spoiler: Missing Link, Abominable. The Globes dont seem like the best awards show to have an animated category. It's not rearlly there thing (no celebrities). So why not mix it back in with Comedy/Musical?

 SCORE  SONG

• 1917
• Ford V Ferrari
• Jojo Rabbit
• Joker
• Little Women

Potential Spoilers: Joker, Harriet, Motherless Brooklyn, Pain and Glory

• Cats "Beautiful Ghosts"
• Frozen 2 "Into the Unknown"
• Harriet "Stand Up"
• The Lion King "Spirit"
• Rocketman "I'm Gonna Love Me Again"

Potential Spoilers: Anything...but going with mostly celebrity-based choices because that's how they do with songs.

I’d die if both the Booksmart ladies get nominated they deserve it so much. Funny as hell!

Solid choices! I'm predicting a double nod in supporting actress for Margot Robbie. One note - The Farewell is competing in Foreign Film.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAbe

Considering how much they rubberstamp veteran names, I'd drop Constance Wu and add in Blanchett for Where'd You Go, Bernadette in Actress Musical/Comedy.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCharlea

"Once Upon a Time..." a comedy and "Marriage Story" a drama? What would it be without another year of nonsensical HFPA categorizations?

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

Charlea -- probably a good call! But part of me thinks everyone forgot that Where'd You Go Bernadette exists.

December 7, 2019 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Jonathan - I know, but I'm ecstatic that HFPA rejected Uncut Gems' play at being Comedy/Musical. It's like every year it gets more ridiculous than the last, and at least this time HFPA said NO!

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCharlea

Satellites gave 5 moms to Pain and Glory. I think HFPA can repeat that and even add one for Score.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJesús Alonso

The choices are very good and for the most part line up with my choices.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterrdf

Is Wild Rose being run as a musical? In which case surely there’s Jessie Buckley room?

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRobUK

For some reason I think they're going to nominate Taylor Swift for acting. Sounds ridiculous but that's the kind of things the Globes always do.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLuiserghio

I worked on Ford v Ferrari and they literally had a HPFA event in a tent on set during filming. I also feel like it'll show up in a few categories.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Interesting that you aren't predicting Erivo. Do you think she'll be snubbed on Oscar morning?

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

What about Florence Pugh in Supporting Actress!?

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterBhuray

I can see them double-dipping with ScarJo but I wonder if they’ll feel compelled to since they know she’s showing up (Marriage Story). Margot Robbie being a double nominee seems out there, but I can definitely see it happening if she splits her own votes but still gets more than the 5th or 6th likeliest contenders in that category. Also, don’t count Anna Paquin out. She’s the heart of The Irishman - lines be damned. And HFPA loves its celebs.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMJ

MJ - good point on Anna Paquin

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Hustlers is fun but not remotely a comedy. Marriage Story is more drama than comedy but more appropriate than Hustlers for that category.

Sandler is getting in, I believe. Dafoe and Pesci with maybe Alda being in and there being 6. Don't see Shia ahead.

So category placements all offical?

And Cats...I see why, but nah.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

Anna Paquin, fuck yes. Please, let that happen at GG, SAG and Oscar.

European Film Awards have just finished, Pain and Glory won Actor for Banderas (who is still in great momentum) but lost to a 2018 film in the Oscar race Picture and Director (The Favourite), so that is unclear if it is a weakness facing the BAFTAs. It also lost Screenplay to Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

My only hope about Cats being nominated is to see the film lose and get a shot of Taylor Swift's ugly-ass bitch face in the same way she reacted to losing to Adele.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

Andy - I guess he predicted her out just cuz the GG really likes bigger names, famous stars.
I think they will nominate dont call me angel for song, just cuz it has ariana, lana and miley in it.

I wouldnt bet against the joker, they like big box office too.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterdan

My GG surprise prediction - Best Drama and Best Actress Drama nominations for Us.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

A GG Best Director slate:

Claire Denis, “High Life”
Greta Gerwig, “Little Women”
Marielle Heller, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood”
Céline Sciamma, “Portrait of a Lady in Fire”
Lulu Wang, “The Farewell”

Why?
Because the GG Best Director category is totally unimportant. It doesn’t matter. If a director misses a GG nomination, pffft. They don’t care. It’s the actors categories that add a little cachet.

So the strategic way to use a pointless category is to use it to stick it to the competition. You use it to make the competition look bad.

So when they say, “The GGs are just a bunch of starf***ers”, you riposte, “At least WE recognize and acknowledge women directors, unlike YOU”.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered Commenteradri

Nathaniel-how small is Kidman's part that she wouldn't be able to be shortlisted here? The Globes love her, so I'm curious if this is just a cameo (or if you can say-not sure when reviews can start coming out for Bombshell).

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

I still think Lupita is going to get that Oscar nom, I think she's going to be mentioned everywhere in the 5, and already has been in quite a few critic groups, and she'll end up being undeniable. It's the path Daniel Kaluuya followed, and I don't think in Oct/Nov anyone was predicting him. I don't know if it's a coincidence or some Jordan Peele-related magic.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

"Once Upon A Time in Hollywood" is neither a comedy or a musical

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

How in the world is The Farewell a comedy? Sometimes these categorizations are ridiculous.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

@Aaron

Because The Farewell takes a lighter tone to the melodrama of its central story line. The farce wedding is filled with humorous moments surrounding it.

December 7, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

I think Shia hitting at the Globes feels very very possible.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

I cld see 6 nominees in Best Director category, instead of Actor (Drama). That way, they cld squeeze in Mendes, w/o leaving out Greta, thus avoiding ano debacle, when they snubbed her for Lady Bird 2 yrs ago.

I wish Jessie Buckley cld get noticed too but sadly Wild Rose din make any dent in US, she wld've a betta chance w BAFTA I guess.

I don't see a double dip for Lebeouf, but now tt Sandler has to compete on Drama side, he's v likely to score for Peanut Butter Falcon.

Speaking of Sandler, I dun tink HFPA will snub him over Pryce or Bale. I tink he will get in the final 5 in drama side.

Drama Actress-wise, I tink HFPA might go w Woodard or Erivo, instead of Lupita. They are alws averse to horrors, n Toni also missed a nod last yr for Hereditary although she was highly acclaimed by critics.

Supp actress I'll swop Bates w Pugh, HFPA can't resist a rising star on the cusp of breaking out, and this yr, Pugh is THAT gal!!

Side note: Zhao is family name aka last name in western world, Shuzhen is the actress given name. Juz like Gong (family name) Li (given name).

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

I wouldn't be surprised if Yesterday gets some nominations.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGuestguestguest

guestguest gust -- UFF. how did i forget that one in these predictions. I totally think the lead guy will get nominated rather than shia!

December 8, 2019 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I like Bill Hader in It 2 better than Pitt, Pacino and Pesci. Would be fun for the globes to carry on the Barry love to this performance.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJohn Ra

“That lead guy” has a name. Hamesh Patel. #Sayhisname

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterbeyaccount

I have a sudden fear that they will nominate Will Smith - Aladdin as best comedy actor

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered Commentervictor S

They like films that have international casts

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

These predictions are way too respectable. They're bound to nominate an Aaron Taylor-Johnson or a Ridley Scott for All the Money in the World. It's the Golden Globes!

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterjules

These are great predictions.

One of my favorite things about the Globes is to think about the performers who need the Globe to cement their Oscar buzz and the types of performances that can make it to the academy awards without the Globe nomination (e.g., Melissa Leo, Marion Cotillard, etc.).

This year, I think Cynthia Erivo will have a hard time getting a nomination if she misses at the Globes. However, if Alfre makes it at the SAG and picks up a critics prize, she could sneak in even without the globe nomination.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

LOL - his name is actually Himesh.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGuestguestguest

(Although to be fair, Shia Lebouf is a-ma-zing in Peanut Butter Falcon. That's actually a pretty strong field. Heck, Roman Griffin Davis would even be a fantastic nominee.)

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGuestguestguest

Is Meryl Streep not eligible for The Laundromat? Shouldn't be a shoo-in for best actress comedy/musical? They will nominate her for anything.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

guesguestguest -- i also loved Shia in Peanut Butter Falcon and actually more than I liked him in Honey Boy (though the latter is an infinitely better film.)

Jules -- you make a fair point!

December 8, 2019 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

If they're going to nominate a new actor for his turn in a movie that is a love letter to a pop artist I would love for it to be Vivek Kalra for "Blinded by the Light", his earnestness broke my heart a little.
