CCMA Live Blog

08:00 I was going to boycott the show this year because of The Shark Jump Awakens but I'm an addict. Awards shows. Red Carpets... excuse me Blue carpets. So I watch. TJ Miller begins the show with an okay monologue without many jokes. The recurring joke is the physical gag of his "four dancing critics." In comedy theory this is one fo those jokes that gets funnier and funnier as it goes from the sheer commitment and silliness but it's probably too early in the evening (read: everyone is too sober) to pull this off just yet.

Suddenly picturing a team of 4 puppets typing with me. Enjoying the fantasy.

08:03 There are approximately 1000 reaction shots of Matt Damon already. Which is weird since there are so many celebrities to choose from in the house.

Netflix and Chill. I'd rather HBO Go Down on Someone."

08:05 That's a joke I laughed at. I am only human.

08:07 At some point critics are called "professional sifters"? Which hmmm. Semantic comedy? There's also an aside about Oscar Isaac that I didn't get. Miller also congratulates everyone in the room

All of you are in here. You're in the room. You already did it. you won.

I lost, I guess. I'm not in the room this year. But Kirsten Dunst and Rachel McAdams are. [More after the jump]

08:10 Fargo wins Best Movie or Limited Series. How soon can we get a gif of Kirsten Dunts happy hand dancing?

08:14 Nashville beauties announced Best Ensemble. Critics Choice goes to Spotlight. Rachel McAdams brings the real Sacha Pfeiffer who she played in the movie to the stage.

08:18 Commercial Break.  Amy Schumer is either giving directions to or taking a selfie with a very confused Lily Tomlin. Or perhaps both at once to save time.

08:24 The host visits Amy Schumer at her table and says "Don't be funnier than the host". This is not a requet Amy Schumer could obey if she tried.

08:26 Supporting Actor goes to Sylvester Stallone in Creed. Wanna bet he starts with Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan and learned from this Globes mistake. "Before I get in any more trouble..." Yep, here it goes.

08:31 Leading Actress in a Leading Role for Supporting Actress Goes to Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl. She seems genuinely surprised. She tries to go back to her seat but the corraler

08:34 They list a bunch of awards that are not presented onstage including a slew of them for Mad Max: Fury Road which takes all three major Action Film prizes). Why did they create so many awards to attract celebrities to a televised awards show only to then not present the awards on stage thus dulling the chances that the celebrities would actually deign to show up to maybe win them? I'll wait here for an answer.

08:39 Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series gotes to Mayim Bialik for Big Bang Theory. "I've actually never won anything." I initially typed Bing Bong Theory and now I would rather be watching Inside Out.

08:42 Commercial Pee Break.

08:47 I am guessing that TJ Miller is going to get terrible reviews but I'm kind of weirdly into his super modest jokes like this bit that goes on forever about the difficulty of opening envelopes.

08:48 SciFi Horror Movie goes to Ex-Machina.
Shot of Rami Malek smiling, because he can also play a good robot.

08:50 Best Young Actor/Actress in a Movie goes to Jacob Tremblay
The reaction shots of grown women oohing and aahing over how cute he is are almost as cute as he is.

I know just where to put this. On the shelf right next to my Millenium Falcon.

08:56 Commercial Break

09:00 Actor in a Comedy Series goes to Jeffrey Tambor in Transparent
Such a great performance. And such an incredible second season. Nice short succinct speech with beautiful gratitude to the trans community

09:07 Commercials.

09:13 Leading Actress as a Supporting Actress in Drama Series goes to Constance Zimmer from UNReal
She's perfect on that show. Damn that was a good lineup of mostly actual supporting actresses though. Jaime Camil presented. How has he not won anything ever for Jane the Virgin? He's just delightful on that show.

09:19 TJ Miller is sitting onstage performing an exorcism of a terrible review he once received.

09:21 Side note: Judd Apatow does a mostly successful bit about dramas pretending to be comedies for his category. "Go F*** Yourself" But he ruins it with a racist aside about qualifying for Foreign Film since they had an Asian actor in their movie. Oy. But at least he gets a dig in at the Critics Choice Awards for their fake ass awards to get celebrities there. Ouch. This was all to introduce Amy Schumer for something called the MVP Award... which incidentally we did not vote on as BFCA members.

09:31 During Amy Schumer's very very long acceptance speech (which feels like that moment where you know you're expected to be "on" but have no patience for it playing to your crowd but every once in a while you remember you're disappointing them so you amp it up. You know that feeling?)  there is a reaction shot of Saoirse Ronan reminding us that she is there. Thanks control booth!

09:35 Commercial break in which I shall forage for snacks. You?

09:37 Best Actress in a TV Miniseries or Movie goes to Kirsten Dunst Fargo.
More handwaves from Kiki. Where are my gifs internet! Somehow her acceptance speech is EXACTLY how I always imagined she'd give one. Super short, briefly giddy, then a 'byeeeee later' vibe because, you know, it's boring to talk when you can be hanging out with friends at a table.

09:39 TV Reality Show goes to The Voice. Seriously Reality Show awards hogging my movie star time? Not cool. Not cool.

09:47 There was some bit with TJ Miller losing to himself and accepting something for a talking bear movie? I didn't get it.

09:48 Best Director goes to George Miller for Mad Max Fury Road. OMG it's the "wives/breeders" from Mad Max Fury Road accepting on his behalf! Zoë Kravitz stars than hands it over to Rosie WiththeLong-Hyphenated Name.

09:54 Commercial Break

09:56 The Genius Award goes to a showreel of ILM. Which means longer commercial break for me. I'm making pierogis since I finally remembered to buy apple sauce.

10:04 Ho hum. Bored now. They just listed a million awards that aren't televiszzzzzz

10:07 Best Actress in a Comedy Amy Schumer for Trainwreck. Lily Tomlin stops her for conversation on her way up to the stage. Then she says "Lily should've won" Respect! Schumer rescues the interminable speech from earlier by making this a dumb tribute to her shut-in sister. Funny stuff. Kirsten Dunst loves it.

10:11 Best Actor in a Comedy goes to Christian Bale in The Big Short who is hilarious in that movie...

...

er...

well...

okay it is a comedy but Bale's part is drama. This is why the drama / comedy distinctions are so strange at awards shows.

10:12 Bale seems much more relaxed than in years past. Maybe because he didn't have to destroy his body with the yo-yo stuff on this movie?

10:15 Aziz Anzari says that actors who say they don't read reviews are liars because good reviews give them huge boners. Best Comedy Movie goes to The Big Short. Adam McKay asks us not to judge his collaborative love with Christian Bale after an embrace. Very short speech and we're off to commercial break. The BFCA likes to brag about how "this and that winner went on to win the Oscar" but basically with 40+ awards there's a pretty good chance they'll get their predictions covered. Consider if a miracle occurs and Mad Max wins Best Picture at hte Oscars? The BFCA nominated Mad Max in three different Best Picture categories at this show and it already won one so they can still say "went on to win the Oscar!"

10:24 Best Actress in a Drama Series goes to Carrie Coon the Leftovers. WOW. What a pleasant surprise. One of the most interesting things about Television prizes from organization to organization is they don't seem to feel the need to predict Emmys. Why cant we have that with movie awards and the Oscars?

10:28 Best Actress goes to Brie Larson in Room. Brie is not there so Orlando Bloom accepts on her behalf.

10:29 William Shatner has been in a little booth announcing awards they didnt' televise. Outlander wins "bingeworthy" which is an award the public votes on containing both new and old series -- mostly new but somehow Friends is nominated -- because it's fun to have People's Choice Awards during something called "Critics Choice". It makes so much narrative sense. Also: I love Outlander so this is not about that.

10:31 Commercials. I recently realized I had forgotten to turn the oven so the pierogis are not yet in my belly.

10:49 LOL. I forgot I was live blogging. That's how bewitching the show was. Best Actor in a Drama Series went to Rami Malek and Best Actor went to Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant. Drama Series went to Mr Robot and Comedy Series went to Master of None

10:55 Sharon Stone presents the final award in a pinkish dress (weird color for her). It's so weird to see Carol clips interspersed with all these inferior movies. Spotlight wins Best Picture. As the credits roll Matt Damon is the first to hop from his seat like 'get me outta here!'

These awards need a big overhaul or the risk becoming obsolete. They should be great but they're awful! Too many random categories....

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrooooke

That's a mighty long pee break Nathaniel... ;)

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMichael

Michael -- you have to "refresh screen" for new content.

January 17, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Are (trying to) watch this.

So it's basically a TV Awards show now..?

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMichael

Umm, did you miss Rachel Bloom winning for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? Or Christian Slater winning for Mr. Robot? No comments on either?

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRichter Scale

Richter -- i can only type so fast while also they were in their somewhere.

January 17, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Oh God, Stallone is totally happening! And I thought the Bullock situation was an embarrasment. Poor me.

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Yes for Kirsten Dunst!

Why does Sarah Hay keep getting nominated for these things? I watched the first episode of Flesh and Bone and thought she couldn't act to save her life.

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterdela

I saw Dunst hanging out by the pool with some of her friends at the Bellagio in Las Vegas last year. I didn't approach her or anything, but she seems like a sweetheart. :)

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTyler

I'm gonna say if the BFCA were as good at movies as they are at TV, they'd be awesome.

On that note, Carrie Coon!!!!!!

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

Is the Oscar Larson's to lose, then?

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBVR

I just cannot get excited about Larson or DiCaprio winning this year - neither is close to the best in their respective category, let alone of the whole year.

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

I will never, never understand how Brie Larson is cruising to wins this year, especially from critics, especially up against Cate and Charlotte. Brie is good in a fine movie, but better than those two? No way.

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

@John absolutely agree re cate and charlotte. if it were merit alone...

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCharles O

Maybe Saoirse could still pull out a win.

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

@Jonathan, John, Charles. Agree about Best Actress. Larson is strong in her movie, don't get me wrong. But Blanchett and Rampling are better by a mile, and I even found Lawrence and Ronan more impressive on second visits of Joy and Brooklyn.

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBVR

heresy, all you Brie doubters! longtime Brie fan in the house. wwwoooooo (Nathaniel, shouting to himself)

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

don't get me wrong, she's excellent in the film, but up against those two pros...

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCharles O

Agreed. I don't dislike the performance. She's good. But there are better options to choose from sitting right there. I can't see her winning the Oscar, or maybe this is just wishful thinking.

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

@Nathaniel: sorry! I really like her, but don't love her like I do the other 4 nominated performances. (For the record, I like Larson more than Lawrence, but Lawrence in JOY > Larson in ROOM)

Also, I saw your tweet about reuniting DiCaprio and Winslet at the podium on Oscar night. Wouldn't it have been ever better to reunite them in 2004? DiCaprio for AVIATOR and Winslet for ESoSM!!

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBVR

Rachel McAdams looks like she fell straight out of the 1990's in that photo (that's not a bad thing). I think it's the mixture of her hairstyle, her lip colour and the spaghetti strap dress that's giving me the 1996 vibes.

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

@Peggy Sue - Me too, looks like we both have to find a way to mentally adjust to a Stallone win.
I find that reminding myself that Roberto Benigni has an Oscar is a good way to remind myself that it's not always merit, and it doesn't really change anything.

I'm also using that same thought to get used to Vikander cheating her way to a win for an unremarkable lead performance win in a supporting category.
Poor Felicity Jones is gnashing her teeth somewhere, thinking I should have gone supporting.

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

Same here...I thought even Lawrence (whom I don't particularly enjoy watching) is far more engaging than Larson in Room. Given that, the rest (Cate, Ronan and Rampling) to me are miles ahead of Larson. Still rooting for Rampling to win although I reckon it's a longshot.

January 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJans

I can see Brie Larson cruising to the Oscar. It's fine, she can have it. But really, as I understand nobody needs a third Oscar, why not give it to Saoirsie? She's been there, reliable, for ages, and her movie is much more entertaining than Room. Why Larson at this point in time??

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered Commenteradelutza

For those still on Team Saoirse, Brooklyn has been seen by more people. Not sure why it's such a default choice for Larson, but critics are only 300 or so people, globes @90 people - AMPAS is almost 7000 - will the larger group make a difference? Ronan needs a Bafta win at least.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

I CANNOT LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE STALLONE COULD WIN AN HONORARY OSCAR FOR ROCKY, BUT CHARLOTTE RAMPLUNG COULD NOT FOR A MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE!

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

-very deserving that MASTER OF NONE won - brilliant show.
-very undeserving that Kirsten Dunst for Fargo - she's so bad.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterUlrich

THANK YOU Craver !!! I haven't seen "Creed" yet - but every performance I've seen in the past 10 years of Stallone was either awkward, wooden or horrid !!! Please not another Hollywood circus - back to outstanding performance of THAT YEAR !!!

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMartin

As much as I love Larson (mostly in United States of Tara really), I do have to say that both Blanchett's and Rampling's performances surpass hers. And certainly Mara's, were she categorized correctly. But I disagree with anyone who thinks Lawrence's very good or Ronan's above average performance is better.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBruno

Why is everyone doubting Brie Larson? I thought she was fantastic in a good movie. The only person I want winning over her is CHARLOTTE RAMPLING!

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBlueMoon02

I think Saoirse will win Bafta (since they did not nominate Charlotte), SAG will be very telling if Brie is cruising to a win. Very hard to see if Charlotte has a good chance of winning since she lost critics choice n no other guild award nominations. What wld be a good indicator that she had a fighting chance?

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBlueMoon02

Blanchett > Rampling > Ronan > Lawrence > Larson, and Larson is totallly excellent and deserving. Superb line-up.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

#TeamSaoirse she MUST get the Bafta! Having just seem Room on Friday Brie is very good but I preferred her in Short Term 12. It does not seem like one of those performances that is so good she must win. However I am truly in love with Saoirse's performance and the film

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterChrisD

By the way, can I just mention how GREAT Rachel McAdams looked tonight - she should always keep her hair short and blonde. I haven't seen Spotlight, but I keep hearing she's very understated to the point of comatose or whatever - but she was phenomenal in True Detective (she was the best thing in that crappy season 2) - and she SO good in Southpaw, really stole the show from Jake and Co.
I've never been a fan of her at all but after seeing her in those two things, I've become a semi-fan of her. I wanna go back and re-watch some of her old movies - I'm definitely starting to look at her in a new light.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterUlrich

In my mind, Saoirse and Brie are way too young to win Best Actress, but I know that's not the Hollywood style.

I would totally separate the television awards from the movie awards. The TV Awards should be closer to the Emmys as a reminder that variety is good.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

God, I really hope the actors in the Academy come to their senses and award Charlotte Rampling. How they can not? She's inspired so many of them, no doubt.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBia

Sadly, some of the loudest bloggers complaining (and rightfully so) that Oscar is too white are the ones directly responsible for stirring up the Stallone hysteria about deserving a competitive Oscar, and it is quite possible that he cost Idris Elba his very well deserved nomination. Year after year the complaints pile up about old white veteran actors claiming Best Supporting Actor for a body of work rather than a decent performance. Hope they're thrilled that an actual actor was overlooked in favor of this wildly overrated supporting turn of Stallone. At least BAFTA and SAG got it right. It was bad enough to live through Rocky winning Best Picture over Network, All the President's Men and TAXI DRIVER!!! But this is lunacy. Outrageous. I can confidently think of at least 10 other actors more deserving of an honor in that very competitive category. Go Rylance, go Hardy, go Ruffalo, go Bale.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPatryk

Given how the precursors panned out I'd say Hardy was the one who took Elba's spot and I imagine he came in 6th or 7th (along with Shannon)

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRami

Wow. I'm not a Stallone fan, but I thought he was excellent in Creed. Totally deserving of the nomination. I love Ruffalo, but it pains me to say he is the weak link in that Supporting Actor lineup. I thought he was actually rather bad in Spotlight, and sadly he stood out as such since the cast was so strong. Almost any of the other actors in the cast would be have been more deserving of the nod. One one hand I'm always happy to see him get recognition since I generally like him so much as an actor--but not for this one. Perplexed that Stallone's tender work is being dismissed so much when there's one genuinely hammy outlier of a performance in that field.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

I would take issue with Bale's role not being comedic. From the first moment we see his off-kilter mannerisms, you know you're not watching a straight drama. If anything, Carell's incredulous moral conscience is more the straight man role.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGuest

Cal -- agreed that it's an excellent lineup. If only it had been Mara instead of Lawrence the clouds would have parted and we could have all ascended up to heaven.

Ulrich - it's funny to read that about Dunst because i have heard nothing in-between only "SHE'S BRILLIANT" and 'SHE'S AWFUL" i haven't watched the show (i have more than enough TV on my plate and i don't want to spoil memories of a classic movie) so the performance is obviously super divisive.

January 18, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

"i don't want to spoil memories of a classic movie"

Nathaniel - For a long time, this was my reason for not watching Fargo (I love the film - it's one of my top 5 films of all-time, and I feel an extremely personal connection to it, because my dad grew up in the North Country, which I think the film portrays very accurately, and, contrary to what the Coens' critics claim, really warmly), and I was wrong. It's a great show, and if anything, it will only enhance your appreciation of the movie. It's set in the same region as the film and it basically riffs on the on the textures of what the Coens do.

The first season includes somewhat similar character beats to the film, but the second season, which is the superior season, is very different, and it includes a lot of references to the Coens' work, which I think you'd enjoy.

I completely understand you don't have time to watch a lot of television, but don't avoid the film because you don't want it to spoil your memories of the movie.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

BTW, you don't really need to watch the first season of Fargo to enjoy the second season, just FYI, although it may help you appreciate some foreshadowing.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Oh man, these comments. I'll try to balance it out by going YAY BRIE! GO BRIE! Cruise to that Oscars you amazing fantastic lady! P.S. I do love Ronan, Blanchett and Rampling.

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Ugh, in a way isn't Sharon Stone the last of the really great movie stars?

January 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

Stallone deserved his nomination. Hands down. He will deserve the win if he gets it. Elba's is the only performance as good as his, and he was definitely snubbed. I'd say Rylance (great actor, overrated, wooden performance), Bale (just weird) or Ruffalo (too showy) could go from that lineup.
