The Gotham Nominations

Chris here. In case you missed it, the season's first precursor nominations were announced on Thursday: the Gothams! Somewhat like the New York City community's answer to the Indie Spirit Awards, the Gothams never fail to highlight some spunkier names thanks to each category being voted on by separate committees. Spotlight may have taken their big prize as well as Oscar last year, but it's the rare Gotham's win to continue on to Oscar.

The year's biggest nominee is Manchester By The Sea (which Nathaniel just reviewed) with four nominations. However, the biggest celebration is likely being had by A24: the New York-based distributor scored nominations for seven of their films, including lesser seen worthy titles like Krisha and Morris From America. This year's ceremony will also feature tributes to Amy Adams, Ethan Hawke, Arnon Milchan, and Oliver Stone.

That Best Actress lineup is just SUBLIME! Rooting for Bening, but it seems weird that she's the sole nom for 20th century women.
I am here to PRAISE the amazing THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE! An amazing watch that tackles the stereotype and turn it upside down. Let's say it's the most suspenseful thing tv I watched this year.

Love seeing Lily Gladstone short-listed! She was definitely Certain Women's MVP. What a performance.

that breakthrough actor category is pretty good.

I'd have loved to see American Honey show up in Best Feature, personally. Also no Little Men is a bummer

Nothing for La La Land, huh?

Funny how these awards bodies kind of get defined by Oscar even when they actively try to look like they don't.

Also, curious about what the eligibility mark is for the Gothams. They are announcing in October their best of the year, but what happens with something like Fences or A Most Violent Year that only shows very late in the season? Have they ever awarded something from the year before or their thirst to be the first and to be in the Oscar conversation simply means they disregard late entries completely, regardless of their artistic merits?

Rebecca Hall was robbed.

Viola Davis has officially submitted herself in the Supporting Actress category with SAG for Fences.

I'm really happy to see Everybody Wants Some!! acknowledged. I couldn't have loved it more. Honestly, I like it more than Boyhood, which I also loved.

Happy to see The Fits, Everybody Wants Some!! and Southside with You get some recognition. All three were among my favorite films of the year so far and are likely to be ignored by the more mainstream awards bodies.

Actually, these are some nice nominations all around. It's good to see an awards body that doesn't seem concerned with trying to predict the Oscars!

First official category fraud in next year's Oscar - Viola Davis.

Nice best actress line-up, but why Gothams dun hav any supp categories?? No dir too???

Were Emma Stone, Rebecca Hall, Amy Adams and Meryl Streep deemed ineligiblle? That best actress lineup seems weak to me, but I know every group wants to do their own thing. In October. Viola may very well be supporting, especially if Denzel focuses more on himself.

Great lead actress lineup, yes! Rooting for Huppert but happy for Beckinsale or Negga. I agree that Rebecca Hall should have been there as well.

I haven't seen Fences yet but if Viola Davis' lead performance is indeed going for supporting category, I'm sad for Michelle Williams who was great in the few scenes she's in in Manchester By The Sea . I wish Lily Gladstone is in the supporting actress category, as well as Judy Davis in the underappreciated The Dressmaker .
