Sick Bed List Fever
by Nathaniel R
Okay, this is one of those "sick" calls you make to the boss when you're not really sick but you just absolutely can't. Getting out of bed since Tuesday has been quite a Herculean challenge. Hence the far lighter than usual posting (apologies! but by Monday we will figure out a way to be posting with the mad frequent abandon that awards season deserves). If you have any tricks for soldiering on whilst feeling despair do please share them in the meantime. It's not just myself who needs them.
One of the best activities when feeling under the weather, physically or spiritually or emotionally is arguably list-making. It is "busywork" so in one sense you don't need all that much energy and focus to do it but it is also fun if you choose the right list topic. Over the past couple of weeks I've been updating and fixing the top ten pages (which are always under construction in case we see a new old favorite) but if you'd like to investigate the various decades and see the lists please click away.
Check them out. If only we had time to write about them all...

Question: Do you count film festival releases in lists? Because if you don't, Blood Simple is in the wrong year. What would you boot from 1985? What would be bumped up from 1984?
Is it really so bad Nat.
That picture of the Reality Bites quartet is instant and therapeutic nostalgia.
The shot of Montgomery Clift from Red River immediately made me think of a young Tom Cruise. Never before have I thought they looked alike, but now I can't NOT see it.
Mark - yes. everyone i know feels paralyzed or can't sleep or has been crying nonstop
I am a government employee (a local government employee - I feel so bad for my sisters and brothers employed by the federal government right now) and I was able take a vacation day for the holiday today. I thought I was going to see Moonlight or Arrival this afternoon, but I can't even concentrate on tv. Maybe tomorrow.
This is terrible.
Yes it really is even worse than my ugliest fears. The Supreme Court will overturn gay marriage, Roe v Wade, and will swing so far into a fascist police state people of color will be stopped at record numbers. Rudy in charge of the law. Pence in charge of social issues.
I have also been too ill to go out for 3 days. Senate Congress White House Supreme Court. Germany, 1930's.
Sending a BIG BOX of tissues.
No Do the Right Thing?
I'm about to see Arrival this evening in part because films are such a wonderful way to lose yourself from daily realities. And of course I'll be hunting for certain themes and metaphors given our current political reality.
I needed this, thanks Nathaniel. I'm absolutely terrified about the future. I can't believe this is 2016.
Nominating Scream to fill the missing 1996 slot.
Looks like I counted 14 Woody Allen films.
Sleeper
Annie Hall
Interiors
Manhattan
Stardust Memories
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Hannah and Her Sisters
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Alice
Husbands and Wives
Bullets Over Broadway
Everyone Says I Love You
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Blue Jasmine
plus one special mention of Match Point, which over time has become one of my 5 best Woody films.
I am going to use Chet's line:"Get over it "
Trump never thought he was going
To be elected. His bombast and fear mongering
Were his attractions. If you all remember correctly.
He wanted to give power back to the states. Your
marriages will remain. Don't forget he is NOT
the Almighty. There are checks and balances
Damn. Cher not Chet.
rick -- there are not checks and balances when the GOP runs all branches of government and their very platform (look it up) is anti-LGBT rights and pro deregulation (which gave us the Recession and poisoning citizens with polluted water and so on and so on and so on).
and besides, under fascists checks and balances don't remain for long. They are usually dismantled within a few years. Say goodbye to America as you know it unless a miracle of some kind occurs.
Nate -- OOPS. that was not purposeful. I shall fix.
I am sorry. But you are a supreme pessimist.
I am so hoping I remain on this blog long enough to prove you
You wrong. I am really tired of the
Name calling and negativity here. Not with politics but with film.
You may know film well but you need to look at America with
Much more prospects than you are doing.
And I do. not ha e to look it up. I am very aware of the laws.
I am NOT an idiot.
Shakespeare in Love doesn't even make your top 10? Wow. Did not see that coming.
