the Globes LOOOOVE Sarah Jessica Parker!! It's like their fascination with Madonna showing up for best Song, don''t bet against her! :-)
Looks like Streep may get in for Best Actress Oscar after all!
@brandz: Nobody ever said she was out of the running for the Oscar, but I don't see how getting a Golden Globe nod that was universally expected indicates her chances are substantially different than believed.
I think the Russians are behind Mel Gibson's nomination.
@ Cris
I guess you haven't heard about Jonah Hill's "special" relationship with Vladimir Putin. ;-)
Haha - Louis Virtel and WTH- Hunter Plummer.
Re Best Actress in Comedy noms, I guess there are some rules governing GG that I don't understand (made in the USA/funded by USA $$?), cuz Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Horgan (Castrophe), Colman (Flowers) didn't get in. If that's the case, I would have rather seen a half dozen other women in US shows get in before SLP and JLD: Constance Wu, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Rashida Jones (Angie Tribeca) for example.
Noms that stump me: Kidman (Lion), My Life as a Zucchini (is this for real? why not pair it with Sausage Party? Or is it the same movie?), Jonah Hill (in anything)
@Sean C.
Best Actress Oscar field is very competitive this year. Top 3-4 nominees are easy guessing, IMO. Fourth and fifth slots much more difficult. With Critics Choice comedy win and big boost from Globe nominations (FFJ gets 4 nominations), I say Streep gets in for 20th Oscar nomination. There are many, many doubters out there.
@ Pam
Have you seen Lion? Kidman was in here (and probably at the Oscars) as soon as she delivered THAT monologue.
You make me feel guilty for having loved Hacksaw Ridge. I know I shouldn't because of who Mel Gibson is, but, come on, we all love Polanski's movies too.
As far as I'm concerned, Louis Virtel is a national treasure.
My first thought about SJP's nomination was that she'll win. You can't underestimate their darling favorites and they love giving a boost to new series, whether or not anyone watches them.
Paul- Yes, it was good, but I guess by that point, I was SO disappointed in that part of the movie, I didn't think it was award-worthy. Honestly, there are so many other deserving SA performances in drama this year. Also, I llike Kidman most of the time, but I'm bored by "regular" GG noms, just because they've made a movie...Prob fake news, but you get my point.
Well, it's true, once Dev went all emo for that long stretch, I was checking the time.
Hayden -- i actually love DIVORCE (from what i've seen) but is it not doing welll? (i haven't been paying attention)
Paul - exactly. on Kidman.
Pam -- we reviewed My Life as Zucchini right here
Honestly I'm blind/ignorant to how Divorce is doing—I just know that nobody I know watches it and it's hardly earning major traction on the thinkpiece circuit. By HBO standards it's not making the kind of splash a "breakout" show would.
But I love SJP and so does the HFPA so it'd be nice to see her win.
I stopped watching Divorce after two episodes because of SJP. Even my adoration for Thomas Haden Church, Molly Shannon, Talia Balsam and Jemaine Clement couldn't bring me back for more. So you know she was working my nerves.
Was really surprised by the lack of nominations for Tom Hanks, Greta Gerwig, and Kate Beckinsale. The shut-out for Silence was completely unexpected. And those three key nominations for Nocturnal Animals - yikes!!!
I don't know what issue people have with Gibson. His movie was brilliant, he never did anywhere near what Polanski did, he has been shunned for a decade and he apologized. I don't get why he should have some "life sentence" of avoiding him. Casey Affleck is an issue not Gibson.
I'm very happy Issa Rae was nominated. I hope Tracee Ellis Ross wins, but if not her, then Issa. I think Insecure should've been nominated for Comedy Series too, tho.
Bummed Molly Shannon couldn't make it in here, though I'm happy with that category overall. I don't think Octavia Spencer is, like, a groundbreaking actress or anything, but she's good at her playing her type and I really like her so I'm super pleased to see how well her career has been post-Help.
People are saying Natalie, but she already has two Globes. I think they actually may go with Isabelle Huppert.
Overall, some great choices, some strange ones. As usual. I'm not mad. The Globes always deliver interesting picks. At the very least, this season is exciting cuz there's fluidity in many categories.
I'm a Divorce defender. It's thorny and upending in only the best ways. The fact that basically every (major) character is unlikeable is one of my favorite things about it. Hope it gets renewed.
To be honest I'm quite annoyed with this attack on Taylor-Johnson.
He was GREAT in NOCTURNAL ANIMALS: if you did not like the movie - OK, you don't have to but at least don't judge his performance through your dislike for the movie.
Michael Shannon was awesome - that's true - and he also should be nominated - but this doesn't mean that T-J isn't a good choice too.
