Well I'm currently watching Dr. Mabuse the Gambler, so that. (It's...all right.)
Working on an Easter blog in which I revisit PASSION OF THE CHRIST and LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST. I am so surprised that LAST TEMPTATION barely gets mentioned anymore. I so recall the protests and boycotts, and it is such an infinitely superior film to PASSION in all respects. Scorsese's nomination that year for Best Director was one of my favorite Oscar surprises. And I really need me some more Barbara Hershey in my life.
Finally caught up with Tangerine and Grandma. I'm hoping more people will catch up with them because both are significantly worthwhile. I also finally watched Reflections in a Golden Eye, which is definitely due for a filmexperience retrospective. Brando and Taylor star, directed by John Huston, but it's not nearly as good as it sounds.
THE MASTER and how it missed out on any non-performance nomination.
About a third of the way through A Nightmare on Elm Street 3. Especially considering what it is, it's a very good debut feature. Probably an A-.
Saw The Crucible on Broadway last night. Saoirse Ronan was very good (particularly for a complete newcomer to the stage) but her part is actually smaller and has the least development to show off her range. Ben Wishaw and Sophie Okonedo are incredible...in a more diverse world, she'd be well on her way to a EGOT with this one. Heartstopping production of a show you think you already know from high school.
I just watched Latter Days last night. Steve Sandvoss has retired from acting to become a goat farmer. He even changed his name. I'm wondering why people leave "show business." What compels them to get out, particularly at such a young age. I wish someone would interview him about it.
Rewatched 1980's "Flash Gordon" the other day and it's kind of perfect, in its way. Visually thrilling, clearly conceived and executed. Maybe 10 minutes too long. Such fun.
I've seen Sunset Boulevard (Wilder, 1950) for the first time now. Norma Desmond is pretty much the exact opposite of Margo Channing.
Both very iconic performances. I still don't know why Bette Davis never won a third Oscar....
Victor/Victoria and marveling at what a perfect gem of a movie this is.
I was just thinking about about how charming Sally Field is in Hello, My Name Is Doris. I didn't expect to go see that movie, but I'm quite glad I did.
Barbara Hershey is a big favorite of mine. I first noticed her in a short-lived series, The Monroes, back in 1966. Then there was Last Summer (1968) directed by Frank Perry, The Baby Maker (1970) by James Bridges, The Liberation of L B Jones (1970) directed by none other than William Wyler! and Boxcar Bertha(1972) with Martin Scorsese at the helm. That was quite impressive! It was during Boxcar Bertha that she met and got involved with David Carradine. I believe that he spelled disaster for what could have been a brilliant, firt-rate career.
I am watching A Royal Affair, so this one.
Finished Elm Street 3. Yup. A-.
1. Wondering if Michelle Pfeiffer would have her Oscar had she ran for Supporting for Baker Boys instead of lead. She was amazing -- and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to see it -- but I'm not convinced she was solidly a lead.
2. After seeing Anna Karenina, Atonement and Pride and Prejudice for the first time all within a few weeks, wishing Keira Knightley and Joe Wright would only work with each other from now on. I've just been bowled over by each movie, when I expected them to be stuffy and staid.
James - Congrats on joining the club and becoming a convert to the films of Knightley/Wright. They are a potent and visually creative duo - I'm sure they will do another feature film sometime. In the meantime you might take a look at those Chanel ads that are a bit fun.
I saw Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter a few days ago and, as a huge fan of Rinko Kikuchi's work in Babel, Norwegian Wood, and Pacific Rim, I'm a little perplexed as to why she seems to be so underrated among critics and cinephiles.
1. Dawn of Justice will make money and that will be seen as redemption for its awfulness.
2. I own Carol now so weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
The Birth of a Nation (2016).
Haven't seen the film yet, but the Wakefield / Tribeca Film Festival controversy is on my mind.
Also, Y Tu Mama Tambien. Since I binge-watched Mozart in the Jungle, I had to go back to watch a young Gael Garcia Bernal.
My Steve Jobs DVD arrived and I no longer intend to do anything else with my life except watch it again and again. I loved Steve Jobs like everyone here loved Carol.
Also, and maybe I should be ashamed to admit it but I'm really not, I liked the Bridget Jones's Baby trailer. Can't wait for that mess.
Just thinking that at this time last year we already had MM:FR and Ex Machina on the horizon. Wondering if we'll have any films of such phenomenal quality early in the season this year (wide release for us peasants!)

Nightmare 3 is the worst to me of the 80's Nightmare movies.
Just finished Quo Vadis(1951).
Amazing always. Lions eating christians, Nero Norman Bates, Robert Taylor doing his best George Clooney, sumptuous sets, incredible costumes, music coming and going in the right moments, the fire in Rome in the best colors, the good fighting the evil and winning
- of course -, the action and the message in the middle, the big and perfect cast and Deborah Kerr so young and her red long hair and acting reminded me of Jessica Chastain.
Just made me think of the superhero movies of today if they were made at that time. Imagine Captain America, Iron Man, Thor directed by Cecil B. DeMille, Howard Hawks, William Wyler, starred by Cary Grant, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, shot in technicolor and clothed by Edith Head.
Pasolini's MEDEA, if you must know.
Kimberley S: Okay, First. Iron Man and the Marvel version of Thor didn't exist in the 50s. 2. Even if they did, I'd DEFINITELY change all three implied actors (one switch, one removal) and would switch the implied directors of Captain America and Thor. (Captain America: William Wyler directing James Stewart. Iron Man: Howard Hawks directing Robert Mitchum. Thor: Cecil B. DeMille directing Burt Lancaster.)
/3rtful: I'm on the 4th of the 5 80s Nightmares, and I'd probably say the 4th or 5th will wind up taking that specific throne. (Full series, though, I'd actually expect it to break down like so: Original (A), 3 (A-), Vs Jason (B+), 2 (B), 4 (B-), 5 (B- or C+), New Nightmare (C+ or C), Freddy's Dead (C to C-), 2010 (D).)
Anna - I love Steve Jobs, too. It was my favorite film of 2015. It's so dumb to think that it would probably have received major Oscar nominations if it were released differently or made more money, but oh well.
I was sick from work today and finished S4 of Girls (yes, a whole season behind). The show has been judged so unfairly that no one is paying attention (especially awards bodies) in its final seasons *sigh*
BUT once it's over, we'll hopefully get Dunham's TINY FURNITURE follow-up
Working on my review of Pitch Perfect 2 which is nearly half-done.
Ewan McGregor deserves so much more success.
Been thinking about Garry Shandling.
PP2, while still amusing, is such a drop off from the first movie.
How slowly I'm getting through the classics. Still stuck in the early '40s - the Ball of Fire DVD has sitting on the shelf for months (and I love Barbara Stanwyck, what's wrong with me?) and I have a long list on Amazon Prime of movies you can't get on DVD, like Kitty Foyle and Our Town. BUT I also still have to see Macbeth, Steve Jobs and other contemporary releases, plus all the good TV I'm way behind on.
Le sigh...
Finally watching 'Tell No One' and i'm perplexed as to why i've never heard of this film.
MM - you mean the french film with Kristin Scott Thomas ? - It was a happy discovery for me back when they had video stores. It's a foreign subtitled film so unfortunately these films never get the audience they deserve. Glad to hear that you liked it.

I just watched Bridge of Spies, and found myself thinking that Jesse Plemmons must have the best agent in Hollywood. How does this guy keep getting cast?
In a related thought, the reviews for Batman v. Superman only confirm what I've been saying for years: Why does Zack Snyder keep getting another chance?! Any other director (especially a female director) who had made one of his terrible bombs would never work in Hollywood again, but he keeps getting big budget gigs. It is unfathomable to me.
@Nat - oh, it wasn't intentional, nor did it have anything to do with dreading the movie. other things just kept getting in the way. and i finally watched it last night and liked it a lot!
