Curio: The Neon Demon

Murtada here. Making the rounds online is fan art for Nicolas Winding Refn’s summer release The Neon Demon. Taking inspiration from Refn’s own “neon noir” aesthetic, the posters looked the part so much so that I first thought they were the real thing. They are not, they just are really good.

The film is possibly a vampire / horror story about an aspiring model (Elle Fanning) in Los Angeles and a group of youth-obsessed women who try to steal her youthful vitality and appearance. Alongside Fanning we have Christina Hendricks, Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves and Abbey Lee (Mad Max:Fury Road). Hendricks is working with Refn for the second time after her memorable part in Drive (2011). Refn has previously said that she would be his ideal choice to play Wonder Woman. Does that mean he created a meaty part for this singular actress?

Neon is rumored to be headed to Cannes where Refn is a favorite. He won best director at the croisette for Drive, and was in competition with Only God Forgives (2013). The chatter online is that he might be relegated to Un Certain Regard this time because of the less than positive reception of Only God Forgives.

It will be curious to see if this film would generate any iconic images and /or costumes like that jacket worn by Ryan Gosling in Drive. It should, since it has already inspired these cool posters. Which poster do you like more? Any thoughts on the "what if"of Hendricks as Wonder Woman?

It looks interesting and the art is beautiful. I hated Only God Forgives so much, but I loved Drive and Bronson was good.. I want to give Refn another chance.

Prefers Only God Forgives over Drive. The latter has no curiosity replay value. The former has one of the best performances from Kristin Scott Thomas ever. I love Refn is obsessed with Los Angeles. We need more auteurs who see value in the city.

OT: The Rogue One: A Star Wars trailer dropped. I don't want to make final judgment before seeing the movie, but, to me at least, Felicity Jones is seeming like a Mia Wasikowska in Alice in Wonderland x1000 level mistake just on her character biography and her delivery of two lines of dialogue. Unless Jones is actually better in the final product, this will probably wind up joining my "See, THIS is why Katie Jarvis really should be used more!" club alongside the Action Alice franchise and Carey Mulligan's 2015.

Why don't movie posters just look like this all the time?
