This new profile on Chloë Sevigny by Xan Brooks at the Guardian has been getting a lot of attention for its provocative pullquote on her "disdain for auteurs" but the whole article is interesting.

Of special interest is her candid conversation about her 90s 'it girl' years in indies.
When Sevigny was Oscar-nominated for her turn in the 1999 indie drama Boys Don’t Cry, as the girl with whom Hilary Swank falls in love, it looked as though mainstream stardom might be hers for the taking. Sevigny scoffs when I say this; she doesn’t think anything is “there for the taking”. But the fact remains that she turned down the sidekick role taken by Selma Blair in Legally Blonde (“which might have made me some money”) and a raft of similar offers. “A few little things like that, more comedic, and it probably wouldn’t have hurt to have done them.” She wrinkles her nose. “But I was very purist back then.”
She also reveals that she really wanted Uma's part in Nymphomaniac and prefers working in television to film now.

That bit about the rats in the Chloe interview is an amazing window into her psyche. I love her. I hope Drew Droege read the interview. All kinds of fodder for his next video in there.
Hoping the Dern vehicle isn't an endurance test about what audiences will accept in recreating a teenager in sexual situations with adults.
Rebecca Hall as the Mandarin.... now that would've been even more interesting. Especially for the fact that she and Gwyneth would have the ultimate bitch fight with Tony Stark watching in horror but also excitement.
The Juliette Binoche piece is good. Ditto a recent Vanity Fair article about Almodovar working secretly with Streep to conjure up a film that he ended up shooting in Spanish.
Thanks for the heads up Tom. It frustrates me to no end he is obsessed with Streep. It also bothers me he has not bothered once to utilize black Spanish characters. Grace Jones, Lupita Nyong'o, and Phylicia Rashad are fluent in Spanish. He could build an amazing movie out of a perspective rarely explored in Spanish cinema.
Reminder that Anne-Marie is an extremely talented, under-used actress. She pops more than anyone in the dull Suffragette, gives a vibrant, complicated performance in Nowhere Boy, was utterly heartbreaking in The Magdalene Sisters, and absolutely demolishes Cate Blanchett with her portrayal of Elizabeth I in The Virgin Queen. McAvoy to his credit had said he knows he's the less talented of that duo.
Aw, thanks for posting the Sevigny article--she is still the coolest kid on the block. Wish I was in town when she had her sale because I ALWAYS stay in the East Village when visiting NYC. Come back, Chloe!
Nat: 1. So, since he didn't cite The BFG, that probably means Spielberg is going to support a "supporting" (ew) campaign for Ruby Barnhill. 2. Shane Black does mention that how Marvel is set-up NOW isn't going to do that again.
Steven: Watching it, I always thought Guy Pearce was barely being directed in the last stretch of the movie. Now I know why: They didn't WANT him as the main villain.
Kate: Not that overshadowing Cate Blanchett in either Elizabeth movie is hard. She's not THAT focused on in the first (though she's the title character her role in #1 ultimately isn't that much larger than Geoffrey Rush's, honestly) and is far too hammy in the sequel. Seriously, I know the "respectable" choices seemed slim that year, but, in order of respectability: Naomi Watts in Eastern Promises? Charlize Theron in In the Valley of Elah? Michelle Monaghan in Gone Baby Gone? Helena Bonham Carter in Sweeney Todd? Amy Adams in Enchanted? Nikki Blonsky in Hairspray? Jenna Fischer in Walk Hard? All better performances than Blanchett in Elizabeth 2.
The misogynist comments section on that Binoche articles is so depressing.
Rami, right after I read the article the first thing I warned myself not to do is visit the comments section. Apparently, when women, minorities, and members of the LGBT community demand greater visibility in media, the bigots take that as some threat to their existence. I applaud Binoche for calling Spielberg and Scorsese on their mess and like her more with everything I read about her.
And here I thought it was impossible for Binoche to be even more awesome
