Links: Danielle Brooks, Shark Movies, Ghostbuster Themes

The Ringer "True confessions of Shark," the star who invented the blockbuster (Ha!)
IndieWire calls The Shallows the best shark movie since Jaws. Wow... but then, on the other hand, are there any good shark movies since Jaws so maybe that's not such high praise?
Buzzfeed has a long gripping read about director Karyn Kusama's tough journey from Girlfight (2000) through two studio disasters and on to her new film The Invitation (2016)
TFE... which we reviewed in April, icymi
YouTube the new Ghostbusters theme song "Ghostbusters (I'm Not Afraid)" by Fall Out Boy is basically a cover with some new flourishes including Missy Elliott so it won't be Oscar nominated (or even eligible) like the original tune from 1984

US Magazine there's a Golden Girls Cafe opening in NYC but "cheesecake" isn't the menu headliner so fire everyone. (If you read the fine print it's actually a restaurant in honor of Rue McClanahan... but they're really pushing it as a Golden Girls Cafe so they need to step up their menu game)
Variety This Euphoria movie cast gets better and better: Eva Green, Alicia Vikander...and now Charlotte Rampling? And it's got a female director and a great cinematographer (Ex Machina's Rob Hardy). Be still my (frost-bitten) heart
Slate rips apart 2016's sequels as anti-storytelling, pro-branding. Yes.
BeSpoke Redmayne awww a little precocious 8 year old who loves Stephen Hawkings and "Eddie's Marilyn movie" got to meet her idol Eddie Redmayne
NY Theater in case you want a headstart on NEXT SUMMER's Tony Awards - lots of potentially exciting shows opening in the next 11 months including revivals of Falsettos, The Little Foxes, Hello Dolly, and Les Liaisons Dangereuses with Janet McTeer as the Merquise de Merteuil and Liev Schreiber as her partner-in-love-crime Valmont

Quote of the Day
Today Show Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black, The Color Purple) says:

My career is a Crayola box now!"

I demand remakes of Blue Angel, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Foxy Brown, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon all starring this fine actress. LOVE HER SO MUCH. Hoping Emmy notices her soon for Orange is the New Black

Uh... Try 'Movie of the Year'

iTunes rental deal this week is Todd Hayne's Carol, our #1 film of 2015. It's only 99¢ so there's no time like the now if you've been putting it off. (If you're into buying digital copies of things -- I am not. I need physical copies as digitial is too ephemeral and as soon as there are technology updates or you get a new computer suddenly you lose things -- there are a ton of great deals on LGBT movies at iTunes under their Pride month label)

I would totally visit that Golden Girls cafe, I just hope they take the time and energy to do it properly and not half-assed. It could be amazing. Imagine all the gay first dates there!

It must be me. Orange for its deep ensemble only ever has a handful of standout and wonderful performers deserving of awards recognition. And rarely are they ever acknowledged. Brooks is not one of them. She's a sweet girl. I remember being embarrassed by her cameo on Girls. Maybe if she books a Lee Daniels vehicle he can push her into a performance understanding of your admiration.

Danielle Brooks is the star Jennifer Hudson was supposed to be. I don't begrudge Hudson any of her success because she's a supremely talented vocalist, but I'm glad we've gotten real about the fact that she is not a good actress. In fact, she's a distinctly bad actress. If I were a director, I'd be terrified to work with her because her acting brings down the quality of very good projects (see Confirmation).

She threw a tantrum about her Tony "snub" for the Color Purple (Brooks was nominated, obviously) and it just threw them into sharp contrast to one another, for me. Especially as I watched the latest season of OITNB. The sky is the limit for what Brooks can do. Talent like that never goes out of work.

/3rtful -- i have rarely disagreed with you more. Brooks is without question one of the sharpest performers on OITNB and she's brilliant in The Color Purple onstage. I want to see her in a ton more things.

David -- well, again i guess it's supposed to be more of a tribute to Rue Mcclanahan than the Golden Girls itself btu the PR team and the media sure is pushing the Golden Girls angle even though it's clearly not that given how they're discussing the menu. ;)

Hayden -- agreed. It was frustrating watching Color Purple and seeing this vacancy where all this sexual energy was supposed to go in the Shug character. I didn't love the show enough to see it a second time even though it's very good (given the price, second viewings are only for shows you L-O-V-E or find super fascinating) but I wish I could have seen Heather Headley do the role -she's getting strong marks.

Jennifer Hudson relies on Queen Latifah's acting coach. A handsome and seemingly nice man who's doing neither woman a favor with his expertise.

June 23, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

I thought Brooks was great in her cameo on "Girls" FWIW and I agree that she's just aces on "Orange is the New Black." Her chemistry with Samira Wiley (also incredible) is the result, I think, of two great performers playing off each other.

One of the things I do like about "Orange is the New Black" is that every viewer can find their own MVP among that deep cast and opinions are so diverse about who's best in show.

June 23, 2016 | Registered CommenterKieran Scarlett

Kieran--well said. My personal favorite has always been Tastee.

June 23, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPam

/3rtful -- well that explains a lot. Queen Latifah seems to sleepwalk through every role. She was exciting a million years ago but her performances have felt flat or phoned in for years and years now. (though i haven't seen Bessie)

June 23, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Fall Out Boy? No thanks. They suck.

June 23, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

See Bessie. The ensemble surrounding her is excellent. She's not bad in it either. Better than you would expect given a lot of her recent work.

June 23, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

She is not very good in Bessie...

June 23, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterrick

I'm disappointed that Euphoria is not an adaptation of the book by Lily King, but still, stellar cast forming.

June 23, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterChris K

Queen Latifah is a movie STAR - being an acting chameleon would be a bonus.

Jennifer Hudson is a blank canvas - being an acting chameleon is essential to future success.

Incomparable - Latifah is hampered only by film choices, Hudson is hampered by natural ability...

/3rtful and Rick - STOP IT. I have had to remove both of you comments as they went totally off topic and became only attacks on each other.

/3rtful - stop antagonizing people and insulting other readers. This is not that kind of a blog. This is a community that loves discussing movies and the arts. It's not one of those "be obnoxious to each other" places like YouTube or whatever. Nobody here likes that! I've asked you this so many times. I do not understand why it's so hard to comprehend unless u are purposefully ignoring this fact in which case stop being a jerk.

Rick - stop falling for his bait (and please leave me out of it next time -- i will respond to whomever I like and treat them with respect when they stay on topic as he briefly did here. to my surprise.)

June 23, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

rick will respond to anything I write which usually has nothing to do with him to bother me. Now you think I'm trolling him into hostility goes to show how much you have ignored me to the point where me defending myself is seen as attacking others. Jesus Christ man get a clue. When I tell you who I am believe me.

June 23, 2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

/3rtful -- you tell me who are you constantly by being belligerent with people, using profanity to demean actresses, insulting me, and so on and so on. You tell me. I believe you.

and it was you who made this one personal -- I read the comments and they publish in order so it's easy to see when things go sour and who makes it personal first. Stop playing the innocent victim and accept responsibility for your behavior.

enough. stay on topic. enjoy talking abotu movies but if you feel like fighting or demeaning someone sign off and get some fresh air.

To be fair, didn't the cast of Golden Girls hate cheesecake in real life?

June 23, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSanty C.

Santy C -- did they? haha. was it the show that soured them on it with all the scenes of eating it?

June 23, 2016 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Nathaniel / Santy C ...

Yes!! According to the Huffington Post:

"One of the most beloved rituals on the show was the communal sharing of a delicious cheesecake. The girls often satisfied their sweet-tooth late at night while sharing their problems and giving each other sage words of wisdom. Over 100 cheesecakes were eaten during the taping of the show and though Bea Arthur, who played Dorothy Zbornak on the series, certainly indulged on-camera, off-camera, she detested the dessert."

There is so neat little fun facts about the show and the girls here if you're a GG geek like me :P
