Idris Elba is The Gunslinger in "The Dark Tower"
Sunday, July 3, 2016 at 9:11AM The Dark Tower, based on Stephen King's novel series (though not apparently a direct adaptation of any particular one of them) is currently filming for an early 2017 release. Here's Idris Elba in costume as The Gunslinger. [More Photos here]
Nice to see his face again after all those computer generated pixels or alien prosthetics (Zootopia, The Jungle Book, Star Trek Beyond). Matthew McConaughey is the villain 'the Man in Black' (set photos). The post apocalyptic drama also features Abbey Lee (The Neon Demon) in the principle female role, Whedonite and nerd-hottie Fran Kranz as the villain's henchmen. Plus: Jackie Earle Haley, Katheryn Winnick, and Claudia Kim.
The costumes are by stylish Trish Summerville. Her work is always so pleasingly modern. She previously did David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Have read all eight books, currently re-reading the first (The Gunslinger). I've followed the various attempts to bring this world to the screen over the years, and I'm thrilled they're finally doing it with such a promising cast.
I'm still picturing Roland as Dollars Trilogy-era Clint Eastwood in my head, as that's who King based him on, but I'm more than happy to have Idris Elba take his place. February 17, 2017 can't come soon enough for me!
I tried reading the first book but could NOT get into it. With that said, doesn't mean the film will be bad.
I am so happy about this project because we actually get to SEE Idris Elba and his gorgeousness.
Anonny, I'm a huge King fan, but didn't like the first book much either the first time. But I do recommend trying again.
The first four books are a fantastic hodge podge of fantasy, sci-fi, horror, western, and allegory. Unfortunately, King's real life accident seemed to affect his writing of the last 3 books, which do drop in quality. However, i do think that ending was perfect for an impossible finish.
That February date feels like the studios doesn't have much faith in the project, but we shall see. Hopefully, we have some imaginative, visionary directors at the helm of this.
At the very least, it will bring the pretty.
