Marion Cotillard and Brad Pitt Got Us Thinking

There are a couple of ways to look at this first released picture from the Marion Cotillard - Brad Pitt November release, Allied. Your mileage might depend on your feelings about the actors. So if you like them, you might be saying glamourous movie stars! Pretty period costumes! Why isn’t it November yet? If not, your reaction might be that the picture is a bit posed. Maybe a bit too studied. Even cheesy...
But if we look closer we notice the officer in the back, his uniform indicating the WW2 setting of the movie. Do we hear a groan? Pitt. WW2. Again. And after Fury (2014) and Inglorious Basterds (2009) we are right there with you. But this time there is Cotillard. Apparently they are spies, he’s British, she’s French, they meet on a mission and fall in love.
Pitt hasn’t been romantic on screen in a while (sorry Angelina we missed By The Sea). That’s reason for more enthusiasm. Specially if he might look as good as this:
Let’s look even closer, there’s another man in the background. He’s wearing Moroccan garb.
Brad and Marion in Casablanca? Will they grapple with some difficult circumstances like Rick and Ilsa? Maybe now the skeptics are more excited about this movie. But you may say they still look stiff. It’s a still after all. And here’s where our faith in Marion’s ability to create chemistry with her co-stars kicks in. Palpable chemistry, legs or no legs.
Chemistry that made Shakespeare prose more carnal than we've ever seen on screen.
OK Mr Zemeckis, do your worst! We're ready.

One reason to be excited for this is without a doubt Marion Cotillard. It looks like a very great role for her and she's absolutely spellbinding in everything she does. She's a classy beauty who's a raw acting talent and even a song bird like singing voice. What a woman!!
Marion and Brad are some of the few remaining movie stars who still get me excited about their movies just for being there. Don't get me wrong, they both have their hits and misses. I don't remember the last movie Brad Pitt made where he fulfilled my excitement. But I'm coming off a high from watching Two Days One Night and it made me forgive Marion for her Batman gig so I'm entirely excited about this picture.
I love spy films! I love Marion! I have not loved Pitt for quite a while but we know he is capable of giving a terrific performance when he wants to.
So I'm an In so far but really depends on the trailer, and then will depend on reviews.

As a child of the 80's, I hate to say this but...I was all in until you said Zemeckis. Then I got nervous.
I'm with Tom - weary about the Zemeckis factor. Still want to see Marion in this tho. She and Rachel Weisz are my current crushes/favourites (L).
Who is the costume designer? I'm not loving the general look.

rick gould: I'm not TOO worried. He did Snatch after those (though, at 16 years, that is a long time ago now), and I think his accent work there was pretty good. Intentionally incomprehensible, but good, and that's a lot more specific than normal "British." Zemeckis is the bigger question mark, because he has not had a genuinely good feature in, at minimum, 19 years?
Cotillard is just perfect for a spy role. Her acting is often unpredictable, there is always a mystery in her eyes and she never oversells (at least lately) her characters' emotions. There is always something inside her we never reach, just like Juliette Binoche. You can stare at her face for hours and you may know there is something inside, but she keeps the doors closed.
That's a perfect fit for a spy movie!
I will see any movie with Marion. She's amazing.

Pitt as a Brit and Zemeckis directing are red flags, but if Pitt's a Brit posing as an American and Zemeckis is in Flight mode, I'm excited--with that cast!
