Beauty vs Beast: Colin Farrell's Best Friends Forever
Monday, January 23, 2017 at 3:20PM Jason from MNPP here on the eve of Oscar nominations wishing you all a good night's rest tonight - I know how you'll all be tossing and turning with visions of little golden sugar-plum statues dancing in your heads. Until then let's use this week's "Beauty vs Beast" to tackle one of the greatest movies of 2016 which may or may not get a single nomination tomorrow but if you ask me it'd be up for La La level awardage - Yorgos Lanthimos' The Lobster. And I want to further tune in one two of its finest yet totally unsung turns, both of which I maintain are as fine as any in the conversation for Supporting Actor - Ben Whishaw as John the Limping Man, and John C Reilly as Robert the Lisping Man.
PREVIOUSLY Last week it was John Carpenter's birthday so we looked through our x-ray goggles at his 1988 anti-consumerist actioner They Live, and once again it was "Rowdy" Roddy Piper's chance to pound some alien butt. Said Steven:
"I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum and I'm all out of bubblegum. For the Hot Rod. Still miss that man."

I'm choosing Robert, because damn, he's pitiful! He needs something going for him. And John at least gets the fake everything, no matter how unhappy he is.
I'll likely be on Team Ben Whishaw forever, but there's no way I'd be on Team John. Between these two characters, I have to go with Robert.
I mean that's the thing about this poll - JCR's character is sad and pathetic (aka a John C Reilly character) but Ben Whishaw's character is such a PRICK that it's hard to vote for him. You just wanna kick his little daughter in the shin!
I *just* saw this yesterday! How timely! Anyways Team John obviously because Whishaw looked PARTICULARLY good in this film, didn't he?
My favorite movie of the year! I'm picking Robert because he seems like he'd be a good friend and that he'd be loyal.

Eh, John C. Reilly is an automatic no. First for being nominated for Chicago, second for Carnage, and third for just being himself. Something about him just irks in a most profound manner...
Sorry, guy! You stand no chance when Whishaw is RIGHT. THERE.
