"Get Out" to Be Considered Comedy at Globes

Chris here. Is it time yet to start pondering the Golden Globes comedy field? One quick bit of potentially major news is that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has just officially designated Get Out to compete as a comedy. While this is probably music to team Get Out's ears, I'd argue that it's the appropriate choice - the film is sharp satire first, serious scares second to this viewer. But yes, this gives the film a major leg up to win a major trophy this season in a less competitive field.
This could also mean stronger chances for lead actor Daniel Kaluuya and possibly Allison Williams (who is strangely being campaigned as a lead) for Globes consideration as well. The stiffest competition will probably come from Lady Bird, but what other contenders should we be thinking about? Will The Disaster Artist register beyond James Franco's performance? Could hits like Girls Trip or Baby Driver land in the Best Picture Comedy lineup with less competition? Give us your 2017 Comedy thoughts in the comments!

"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" and "I, Tonya" should obviously go for Comedy at the Globes (and they both would be huge threats for Best Picture)... with "Lady Bird", "Get Out", "The Big Sick" and "The Greatest Showman on Earth" also in the running, it could be a hell of a year in the comedy/musical side of the GG, for once!
@Andrew - Wow, the Dustin Hoffman prediction is brave. I REALLY can't see it happening, not only because it's just not that good of a performance.
Say what now? Get Out is a thriller! How is this funny?
Andrew--Battle of the Sexes isn't a comedy
BotS will surely be submitted as a comedy though. Carell's character enough to convincingly pull it off (even if it's not really accurate).
I don't think it's strange to sell Williams as lead. I mean, she's not as big of a lead as Kaluuya. But supporting is a free for all of drama and comedy so it makes sense. More likely to get into comedy actress (which I'd say is where she belongs as opposed to drama, unlike the film which I don't think is a hah-hah comedy in the way the Globes suggest) than supporting where she wouldn't stand a chance.
Has Kevin Spacey killed the BABY DRIVER push? Even for the globes, is that something they wanna deal with?
Get Out belongs in Comedy, so I never expected it to go anywhere else. It makes for an interesting category though

The Disaster Artist - those all feel like locks (if Three Billboards goes that way) but what about the rest? I, Tonya? Downsizing, Greatest Showman because it's a musical? I don't know about Baby Driver following everything that's gone on with Kevin Spacey. And where is Ladybird going?
Glenn - it will be sad if the Spacey situation killed BABY DRIVER. He's hardly the lead of the film after all and they can easily just ignore him and nominate the film (though i dont think any of the performances would be recognized, even if the Spacey allegations hadnt happened.)
andrew -- i think you're right about BEAUTY & THE BEAST even if I dont want you to be ;) I just pray they skip Emma Watson in Best Actress because with all the great performances out there wasting a spot would be tragic!
Get Out being listed as a comedy is absurd - but the Globes categorizations are regularly blindingly self-serving, not accurate descriptions of the work. Lady Bird is the best comedy I've seen this year, by far. As far as acting nominations I'd like to see on that side of things - Ronan and Metcalf for Lady Bird, and Sandler and Marvel for Meyerowitz (and, sure, Kaluuya if that's how this is being listed - but it strikes me as messed-up to label that a comedic performance).
I suspect the HFPA will go ga-ga for VICTORIA AND ABDUL in the Comedy/Musical fields, including a nom for Ali Fazal.
Nat: It probably has. The Globes don't seem like they're into Edgar Wright anyway, but I'd partially argue that's the result of needing to split Mus/Com into 2 categories: Dramedy/Performance Musical and Comedy/Non-Performance Musical.
Let's look at 2016, because it's the clearest possible illustration of the problem:
La La Land: Non-Performance Musical
20th Century Women: Dramedy
Deadpool: Comedy
Florence Foster Jenkins: Performance Musical
Sing Street: Performance Musical
Yeah, no. A category that is honouring a stylistic spread this wide is basically two categories fighting for space, compromising each other to the point of creating a nonsensical field.
I've always considered Get Out as a warped affair between Kaluuya and Williams. I'm mildly surprised that anybody doesn't see her as Leading!
It's tricky to know what will be classed as a comedy, I agree. (Three Billboards is going as drama, I read). Even though the category is Musicals/ Comedy, musicals still seem to get short shrift.

Have to admit, I skipped Get Out. The trailer looked like a fairly typical thriller with a racial twist. May have to re-visit it since it seems to be a critical favorite.

I think The Big Sick could give it some competition.
I have been banging the Williams drum all year by far the best performance in a Supporting role this year,that bit with the keys,chilling.
Off topic... if I see any more of that "iconic" image of Daniel Kaluuya going into the sunken place with the tears and wide-mouthed expression, I'm going to throw things at someone. Certainly there's other photos we can use to mix it up!
On topic... I'm fine with "Get Out" as a comedy (a very dark satire, it wouldn't be the most egregious categorization fraud in Globes history), and I think that the category will be just fine with or without it.
If Greatest Showman delivers mildly positive reviews, it could probably win here. The Globes adore their musicals.
Otherwise, I assume Get Out and Lady Bird will duke it out for Best Film here. Three Billboards is going Drama by the way. I also feel I, Tonya is underestimated as a contender beyond Janney and Robbie, much like Dallas Buyers Club. I don't think it can win but it can probably sneak into BP here.

I think "Thor: Ragnarok" and Chris Hemsworth have a better chance to be nominated at the Comedy Globes than "Get Out".
I'd say Chris Hemsworth is a lock, already, and the film is *right there* on the verge of that nomination.
"Wonder Woman"? Maybe Gal Gadot. And that's it. Only if she survives the likely JLA disaster.
Where is everyone getting this info about which film is going drama or comedy/musical? I checked the HFPA website and there is nothing. Or maybe I am looking in the wrong places
