With LA LA LAND's success, which director/writer/actors do you wish would attempt an original musical next?
Name five movies that, based on reputation, you regret missing in 2016? (I'd hope Green Room and The Nice Guys are two of those.)
Do you think La La Land is better than Dancer In The Dark? ( which obviously didn't get near the many accolades that La La Land got , or that Chicago got etc )
having just seen the book of mormon i obviously thought of you; are there any biblical or faith based movies you really admire, whether or not the message resonates with you? [i'm a card carrying atheist but i love the film version of jesus christ superstar]
We tend to see actors, writers directors work together after they've been on the awards circuit together for different films, because they clicked or they feel they would be an interesting match. What imaginary collaborations do you think would be interesting from this year's lot.
Thoughts on Juvenile Awards at the Oscars? Favorite winners? If they still did them today, do you think some minors' competitive nominations would have evaporated (we know how you feel about Steinfeld)? Which ones? Who would get a Juvenile Award since 2000?
Why do you think some effective actors like Keanu Reeves or Kristen Stewart (or more recently Rooney Mara) tend to get the strange accusation that they're only capable of one expression? It's patently untrue, but it persists.
It would be a long post, but I'd like to read your personal top 10 Oscar wins in every category of all time, Nat.
Wouldn't it be too soon to have another 'more than two oscar winner actor' if Denzel Washington gets it for Fences? Three winners in 5 years is ridiculous.
I think this was a game played on a podcast way back...
What nominated actor or actress this year would you have been interested in seeing play one of the other nominated characters? I'm curious what Jeff Bridges would have done with Captain Fantastic 15 years ago.
What other 'Feuds' would you like to see covered if Ryan Murphy's new shows catches up and becomes a yearly event (I assume that's the idea, like with his Horror and Crime series) - that's movie-based (Joan Vs Olivia is the OBVIOUS one!) or otherwise :)
Cate Blanchette or Nicole Kidman?
Bette Davis or Katharine Hepburn?
Jennifer Lawrence or Kristen Stewart?
Judy Dench or Helen Mirren?
Natalie Portman or Michelle Williams?
Jessica Lange or Sissy Spacek?
Emily Blunt or Keira Knightley?
Scarlett Johansson or Emma Stone?
Nathaniel, when you publish filmbitch awards ?
Who is your fave actor and actress ?
Please one day upload article about your rank of Cannes or Venice or Berlin winner
Why do you think Bette Midler—two Oscar nominations, seven Globe nominations and four wins, eight Emmy nominations and three wins, twelve Grammy nominations and three wins, one special Tony (and potentially one competitive one this year), gay icon, philanthropist—is less widely revered or discussed (around these parts at least) than comparable ladies of her age group like her First Wives Club co-stars Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn or her Big Business co-star Lily Tomlin?
(I still think she would make the ideal Oscars host.)
Are there any Oscar winners you were unhappy about at the time they won their race, but looking back now feel glad they did win?
If the Supporting Actresses were competing for their actual best supporting performance in their entire filmography, who would win? If we're going by Oscar nominations, it would go like this:
Viola Davis, Doubt (love her, loved her in Fences, wholeheartedly disagree that it's supporting)
Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain
Octavia Spencer, The Help
Nicole Kidman, The Paperboy
Naomie Harris, Moonlight
But you can substitute any of their supporting performances that you think is her at her best.
What's your favorite film set in Venice?
Duh at me, Nicole Kidman was NOT nominated for The Paperboy. Let's pretend we're in a world where she was rightfully nominated for it.
Since Glenn close won a tony about 20 years ago for "sunset Blvd," about 20 years ago, will she eligible again to be nominated for the revival this spring. ? No one can seem to answer.
Miss Close is ineligible for a second Tony nomination for playing the same role, just as Carol Channing, Yul Brynner, Alan Cumming and others have been ineligible in the past.
What would it take for James Ivory to get an Honorary Oscar?
Time Travel Question - Are there any Oscar ceremony moments that you would have like to have seen live (in person)? One that I've always wished I'd been there for is Charlie Chaplin's honorary oscar. Apparently the standing ovation lasted for a really long time (longer than what is available on youtube) - add to that his emotional return after being exiled from Hollywood. I think that would have been a cool moment to be in the room for!
I've recently watched a ton of 1967 movies and wondered if you considered writing a 50th anniversary retrospective of your own. It's a pretty terrific year.
What literary work that has not been adapted into a movie would you like to see made? Who would direct and star in this movie?
Four of the Best Actor nominees feature in a movie nominated for Best Picture, while this is only the case for one of the Best Actress nominees. Is that because the Academy tend to award Best Picture nominations to male-led films or because the Academy is good at thinking outside the box when it comes to female performances?
What do you think of imdb getting rid of their boards? It was a place of solace for us Oscar geeks...
If Almodóvar, von Trier, and Lynch were each doing a big-screen version of the Golden Girls, whom would each cast as Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, Sophia, and Stan?
Good as she was in ROOM, I have a feeling that Brie Larson's Oscar win will go down as one of the more forgettable wins in history. Even worse, the one-two combo of Larson and Stone already feels particularly...blah. What do you think?
Among all the artistic personalities of the story, who would you like to interview each other like Vanity Fair's 'Actors on Actors'? Choose three pairs of artists to interview each other.
Example: Shakespeare and David Bowie.
Give me one mainstream actor/actress with some longevity who has never been Oscar nominated and give me the performance they should have been nominated for.
Example: Kevin Bacon, The Woodsman
I love that performance more than anyone I know.
Ben: John Cusack. If only ONE (probably should be at 3 (also cited for The Grifters and High Fidelity) right now), Grosse Pointe Blank.
Jon: Personal choices? John R. Dilworth (Courage the Cowardly Dog) and Lauren Faust (S1 Friendship is Magic, among other things) (Western Animation), Stan Lee and Jhonen Vasquez (Comic Books) and Richard Garriott and Shigeru Miyamoto. (Video Game.) Watching, tonally, very different, very talented people within the same medium discuss each other is where you'd get the juiciest interviews. Shakespeare and Bowie probably wouldn't be a good interview, frankly.
Can you explain La La Land's sound mixing nomination? I thought the sound mix was terrible, particularly in the first song - the vocals were muted and it sounded like everyone was singing underwater. I get that the Academy at large doesn't understand the technical categories, but shouldn't the sound branch know better?
What was your least favorite film of 2016? Mine would have to be Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. And yes, I saw Gods of Egypt.
Let's play a what if game...
What if La La Land came out last year? Does it win easily? Does Emma win? What wins this year? Who wins Best Actress this year?
I am in a workplace (educating 12-18-year-olds) in Australia where, almost without fail, when I talk about movies starring Nicole Kidman, I get the response "I don't like Nicole Kidman" from women. I also get it from some friends who are like-minded movie buffs.
Do you experience something similar from a large proportion of women? And why do you think it is? As I explain how they need to watch movies like RABBIT HOLE and THE HOURS to truly experience the great actress that she is, I also hypothesise to them that they actually dislike the characters that she finds herself playing on a regular basis i.e. cold women, rather than disliking Kidman's acting talents. Do you think I am in the right ball park?
(Apologies for generalisations, but I swear this is such a common response that it feels like it has well and truly fallen into the zeitgeist.)
