364 Days Until Oscar

No, really! They are. We won't torture you with Oscar trivia daily (well, not every day) but it really is only 364 days until the next Oscars. The 90th Academy Awards will be held on March 4th, 2018. We'll make our first guesses as to the nominee slate in the first week of April. Those April Foolish predictions are not so very far away now. If you've started thinking about this already, know that you are not alone. Many of us suffer the golden ailment.

How did last year's predictions do?

We should play the actress psychic contest again.

I'll toss out a Top 20 for Best Picture and a top 5 for the acting categories:

1. The Greatest Showman
2. mother!
3. Untitled Detroit Project
4. Wonder
5. Baby Driver (Whether or not it happens here, Edgar Wright is, eventually, going to break out with Oscar in a BIG WAY.)
6. Coco
7. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
8. Murder on the Orient Express
9. Spider-Man: Homecoming
10. Cars 3
11. Untitled PT Anderson Project
12. Downsizing
13. Blade Runner 2049
14. Battle of the Sexes
15. Atomic Blonde
16. Megan Leavey
17. Dunkirk
18. Call Me By Your Name (Sundance doesn't always produce ready to Oscar product and this sounds...NOT ready to Oscar)
19. The Glass Castle
20. Darkest Hour

Lead Actor:

1. Hugh Jackman, The Greatest Showman
2. John Boyega, Untitled Detroit Project (I'm just assuming he'll wind up the lead, of course, but I can't imagine they're not going to give him the big fiery "speech" moments.)
3. Jacob Tremblay, Wonder
4. Kenneth Branagh, Murder on the Orient Express
5. Daniel Day-Lewis, Untitled PT Anderson Project

Lead Actress:

1. Jennifer Lawrence, mother!
2. Emma Stone, Battle of the Sexes
3. Kate Mara, Megan Leavey
4. Charlize Theron, Atomic Blonde
5. Brie Larson, The Glass Castle

Supporting Actor:

1. Ed Harris, mother!
2. ?, Untitled Detroit Project
3. Owen Wilson, Wonder
4. Jon Hamm, Baby Driver
5. Johnny Depp, Murder on the Orient Express

Supporting Actress:

1. Rebecca Ferguson, The Greatest Showman
2. Michelle Pfeiffer, mother!
3. Elizabeth Debicki, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
4. ?, Untitled Detroit Project
5. Julia Roberts, Wonder

4. ?, Untitled Detroit Project
5. Julia Roberts, Wonder

Volvagia made a detailed effort almost a year in advance, and that should be commended, but I can't help but point out the futility.

"Yeah, some female cast member from an untitled film will be nominated in the Supporting Actress category, but I don't know which one. Oh, and I have whoever she is ahead of Julia Roberts."

Thanks God no Meryl Streep for the haters this year.

March 5, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJack

Brevity: I think the reason that it's still untitled is probably because the studio is unsure what to title it that's both respectable and evocative. (This IS still a prestige production.) Just calling it "Detroit" would be too vague (it's too big a city with too much major history for City as Title (see: Selma) to make sense), but most other titles you could give a movie about this subject would be too incendiary.

March 5, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Brevity: So, I absolutely wouldn't be surprised if it enters theatres and copyrighted as "Untitled Detroit Production", with no on-screen title, strictly marketed with "From the Director of Zero Dark Thirty and Academy Award Winner The Hurt Locker".

Volvagia's best actress predictions seem too young to be real.

March 5, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCash

Cash: Unfortunately, I'm not seeing a lot of obvious candidates above 40, only Charlize springing to mind. Also: 2015 had three nominees under 30 (which is what I'm predicting), and would have almost certainly had FOUR (Joy and 45 Years traded for a second nom for Carol and The Danish Girl) if there was no category fraud.

Just had a look at Ruth Negga's IMDB profile and was very disheartened that she has no new projects lined up. What a shame, I thought she was deservedly one of the breakouts from the past year. Perhaps she's on a self-imposed break. I can live with that or I'll keep telling myself that's the case.

Oh god, they've stretched the Oscars back into March? I know it's only an extra week, but come on. This season felt looooooooooooooooong.

Volvagia: I don't do the back-and-forth on the Internet, because when I pretty much say everything I want to say the first time. Here, however, I must have done a really bad job because you missed my point entirely.

You're focused on the fact that the film has no title. That's just an interesting afterthought to me. The lack of a title doesn't change a performance, or your ability to predict its likelihood of a nomination.

I was focused on the bizarre concept of predicting that an actress who is unknown to you (and could be any female in the cast listed on IMDb right now) would not only be good enough to make the Supporting Actress shortlist, but would place 4th in order of likelihood.

I guess I could have made a stronger point by using your Supporting Actor predictions, where Question Mark Man is 2nd in the hierarchy, clearly more likely than Owen Wilson, Jon Hamm, and Johnny Depp, but behind Ed Harris.

Again, I think a lot of work went into your predictions, which mostly show some research and care, and I hate it when people lazily dismiss that kind of work. I just think it's futile to project -- and prioritize! -- that much unknown. "Maybe someone from this Untitled Detroit Project" is the kind of thing you save for an honorable mention, after 5 actual names.

Sorry if it offends, but I suspect you wouldn't share your predictions if you didn't expect some sort of feedback.

I'm not buying the notion that Emma Stone would get nominated for Battle of the Sexes.
She resembles Billie Jean King about as much as she resembles a Hawaiian descendant.
I find her way too short/petite/non-athletic...If anything, I could imagine Hilary Swank after Million Dollar Baby taking on the BJKing persona. Guess I'll have to wait and see...

Glenn -- usually when they do that there's some sort of reason like "The Olympics" or something. one extra week won't kill us though I like it in February personally (i dont understand why some pundits keep acting like April was great. It was not. (though it's hilarious that when it was in April people still understand that it was the Previous Year's Oscars and now when it's so close to the actual year it's honoring people are calling it by the wrong year. Time sped up!

March 6, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

You're right, Nathaniel... it'll be a week later to prevent it clashing with the Winter olympics, which are also broadcast by ABC
