There's a link in my soup
NPR Gabourey Sidibe has a book out, now "This is Just My Face: Try Not To Stare" (great title). It's about her rise to fame, body image, and being confused with her fame-making character in Precious which she finds both frustrating and powerful
Time Out New York publishes its own TONY* nominations. Get it, their initials are TONY. Not to be confused with the actual Tony Award nominations which are due tomorrow to honor the best of Broadway. Consider this their "should be nominated" article
The Retro Set looks at the new documentary Mifune: The Last Samurai, narrated by Keanu Reeves, and now available to stream on Netflix. Can't wait to watch this.
Deadline republished an interesting history of the making of Silence of the Lambs. I didn't know that the project started with Gene Hackman who was going to direct and star.
Variety shared a really good interview with Geena Davis. I love what she says about the gender neutral movement with some awards bodies, combining male and female actors into the same category. It's a terrible idea and Geena eloquently explains why
Playbill Chita Rivera flashes back to her West Side Story audition in the 1950s, the show that put her on the map
Awards Daily looks at the prospects for Limited Series Actor... a far more shallow field than its Actress counterpart this year but at least that means its looking good for Riz Ahmed and Ewan McGregor
Playbill Come From Away, a new Broadway musical that's expected to do very well in tomorrow's Tony nominations, is getting its own documentary feature called Come From Away: From Gander to Broadway. It's the true story of a group of strangers diverted into a small town after the 9/11 terrorist attacks grounded airplanes.
Finally...
Interview has Kate Hudson interview her mom Goldie Hawn. It starts enjoyably silly and familial but gets deep into "mindfulness." Goldie is almost back onscreen (Snatched) after a 15 year retirement (that they're somehow calling a "hiatus"). Love this bit about how therapy (which she started around the time of Laugh-In) helped her keep sane despite becoming a household name in her early 20s:
I realized that the way people see me, as a star, has nothing to do with me. It's like a Rorschach test, like I am something they can identify with, learn to love, learn to hate, learn to resent ... but I gave it back to them. So if somebody said to me, "Oh, I love you!"—that makes me happy to see them happy, but I wouldn't take it in as something that builds my ego. And that's how I stabilized myself.
Have a lovely Monday, everyone. How do you plan to "stabilize" yourself this week?

Just came out of the theater from watching Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2... loved it. Same fun that first time, but with more heart and character developement... my husband sheds several tears and I almost did same. Liked everyone involved, and got the feeling it's "The Empire Strikes Back" to vol. 1
And a couple of hints Fox has already a deal regarding at least Fantastic Four joining the MCU. Can't spoil them, but let's say, there's too much of Fox's property in the MCU to just be a gentleman's agreement.
Fave Stan Lee cameo yet. Stay tuned for the FIVE post credits scenes.
I love the Goldie/Kate interview (one of my favorite mother-daughter pairs in Hollywood), particularly the bit about them both being at Heathrow when they won their Oscar nominations.
Goldie has talent... hope she gets back in the saddle'
Kate Not so much.
So many people hastily wrote Gabby's career epitaph after Precious fever died down. I'm thrilled that she continues to work steadily in the industry and remain visible.
Does anyone ever care about Actor in a Limited Series/TV movie? I can't recall a time when that category was "where it's at."
McGregor tries so hard to show range and fails miserably in "Fargo". Since Tatiana Maslany in "Orphan Black" there's been this pathetic need from Hollywoord actors to show that they can act the shit out of some parts, and going the route of playing many characters simultaneously and the only thing this is showing it's their limitations.
I saw Come From Away when it played in La Jolla a couple of summers ago. An old-style, kitchy musical with heart. Felt like a big 'ol hug. Worth seeing esp in these darker days.
I met Gabby a week or two ago. I'm rarely affected when I encounter celebs, but I could really see myself being BFFs with her, so I didn't really make eye contact lol. Just told her she's awesome. She was really sweet.
I thought that Gabby Sidibe was solid (but nothing more) in Precious and overshadowed by half the cast (Mo'nique and Paula Patton as MVPs) - suffice to say, no Oscar nomination from me.
That said, it delights me that she continues to get work (much like Jennifer Hudson, I sometimes wonder whether she is SO NICE that some people cast her irrespective of "proven ability" - nothing wrong with that, either).
I really hope Snatched is good, but the trailers scream otherwise.
Gabby Sidibe was great in Precious. Of course Mo'Nique was MVP, but she was not far behind.
I'm so happy for her to work so much. I loved her in The Bg C:
"Meryl Streep should play me. That b*tch can play everything."
You know, if less competition in the Limited Series Lead Actor category means Ewan McGregor finally wins award, that's not necessarily a bad thing. He's been so good for so long and he never wins - or is even nominated* - for anything.
